In-demand Courses In College Until 2020

Agriculture

As an agricultural nation, it is important for the country to develop its comparative advantage which is
agriculture. Greater productivity in the sector of agriculture could have great positive impact on food
security, and self-sufficiency of the nation.

There are priority courses for the field of agriculture set by the Commission on Higher Education. These
are the following:

Engineering

True to our goal to industrialise the nation, our potential to build infrastructure, manufacture
indigenous goods, and harness resources is growing. As a newly industrialised nation, the Philippines is
facing the challenge of engineering and nation building.

Science and Mathematics

While there are brilliant Filipinos who have made headlines in the field of mathematics and science, the
Philippines performance in science and technology, and mathematics lags behind our Asian
neighbours. Science and Mathematics play a great role in national industrialisation and development.

Information Technology

The information technology (IT) industry in the Philippines continues to grow, as more and more IT-
enabled industries are rising. In fact, there is high demand for but very low supply of IT professionals in
the country and in the world!

Teacher Education

We have witnessed radical changes in the education sector lately with the implementation of the K+12
Basic Education Curriculum of the Department of Education. There is a big shortage of teachers, as
education groups claim, and we have to address this. Not only quantity, but also the quality of education
we must focus our efforts in.

Here are the priority programs for Teacher Education major in:

Health Sciences

The diaspora of medical professionals in the country is appalling and saddening, for the country needs
them. As such, the demand for medical professionals in the country remains high. If you wish to work
under the allied medical professions industry, here are the programs you must eye for:

Arts and Humanities

A critical part of nation-building is a strong and vibrant culture hinged on the arts and humanities.
Social and Behavioral sciences

Another integral part of state building is the social sciences. The study of how human attempt to
organise itself, and realise its goal as a humanity. In the Philippines, our social sciences programs rank
well with other academic institutions in the world (UP made it to the Top 100 in development studies
and other social sciences programs).

Behavioral sciences programs, too, are important as businesses, and other organizations need good
human resource managers, and planners.

Business Administration

In an increasingly globalized world, the Philippines has to prove it is open for business and it good or
best for business. Today, we are the hub of business process outsourcing, and off-shoring. Sustaining it
remains a challenges.

Architecture

Urban planning and environmental planning, in our opinion, is really needed in the country. Great cities
like New York and Paris have great urban set up (symmetrical avenues and well-planned zoning). Zoning
have a lot to do with proper lay outing of highways, streets, and avenues. Poorly zoned major ways
worsen traffic, and we are losing millions in potential income due to heavy traffic every day (and is
estimated by JICA to rise to 6 billion everyday by 2020)!

Maritime

Philippines is the land of the seafarers. This course is not only highly priority because there is high
demand from the global market for professionals who graduate from this discipline. It is also imperative
that given our archipelagic set up as a country, a reliable transport system especially port systems and
navigations is also needed to jump-start our economic growth.

Communication

The power of the mass media is immense. It is even referred to as the the fourth branch of the
government (executive, legislative, and judiciary as three branches of government). This immense
power comes from its characteristics as a meaning-maker or influencer industry. As such, it has an
important role in strengthening culture, and facilitating change and development.

There are also specific priority courses identified for each region. In Metro Manila, for instance, the list
includes library science, values and technical teacher education, astronomy, food technology, pre-
dentistry, political science, real estate, accounting technology, customs administration, management
and criminology.
