Tutorial 3: Topic 3 Stoichiometry and Solution Concentration

1. Balance the following equations:

(a) V2O5(s) + CaS(s) CaO(s) + V2S5(s)
(b) GaBr3(aq) + Na2SO3(aq) Ga2(SO3)3(aq) + NaBr(aq)

2. A salt solution is produced when 2.9 g of sodium chloride, NaCl dissolved in 200 mL
of water. Calculate the molality (m) of the NaCl solution, given that the density of
water is 1.00 g ml1. (Ans: 0.248 m)
[April 2013]

3. Consider the reaction below:

2Al(s) + 3I2(s) 2AlI3(s)

(a) Determine the limiting reagent and the theoretical yield of the product if 1.20
mol aluminium and 2.40 mol iodine are used. (Ans: 489.216 g)

(b) How many grams of excess reactant are left over in (a)? (Ans: 152.28 g)

4. Determine the percentage yield if 2.4 g NH3 is obtained from the reaction of 0.64 g H2
with excess N2. (Ans: 66.57 %)

5. A chemical equation is given as follows with an unknown value of x:

3D(s) E(s) + xF(g)

The percentage yield of the solid in this reaction is 75.9 %. In an experiment, it is

found that 12.5 g of solid E is obtained when 30.8 g of D is used up. Given the molar
masses of E and F are 91.5 g mol1 and 26.5 g mol1, respectively.

(a) Find the theoretical yield (in gram) of solid E. (Ans: 16.469 g)

(b) Calculate the number of moles of D. (Ans: 0.54 mol)

(c) Determine the value of x. (Ans: 3)

[Sept 2015]
6. An impure sample of 1.034 g oxalic acid (H2C2O4) is dissolved in water and an acid-
base indicator is added. In titration, the sample requires 34.47 mL of 0.485 M NaOH
to reach the equivalence point. The equation is shown below:

H2C2O4(aq) + 2NaOH(aq) Na2C2O4(aq) + 2H2O()

Determine the mass percent of oxalic acid in the sample. (Ans: 72.71%)
