2. Goals:
The primary goals of this lesson are, that each student will leave class with one 11 x 17
inch Value work of art. Knowledge gained of the purpose of value and how to create it.
Students will also leave with knowledge on tints, tones and shades.
3. Instructional Objectives:
1. Students will be able to understand information regarding tints, tones and shades then
be able to provide a variety of examples of use in art.
2. Students will be able to demonstrate competence of mixing acrylic paint to create
value.
3. Students will understand the element Value and can point out value in works of art.
4. Standards Targeted:
VA4-2.3 Use visual structures and functions of art to create artworks that
communicate ideas.
National Visual Arts Standards:
Achievement Standard:
Students select media, techniques, and processes; analyze what makes them
effective or not effective in communicating ideas; and reflect upon the
effectiveness of their choices
Students intentionally take advantage of the qualities and characteristics of art
media, techniques, and processes to enhance communication of their experiences
and ideas
Tints: are created when you add white to any hue on the color wheel.
Tones: are created when you add both black and white to a hue. You could also
say grey has been added.
8. Procedures:
First Class
Prep before students arrive
Have messy mats on tables and paint on tables for students
Welcome class
Have them sit at their tables
Tell them we will be learning about Value and painting tints, tones and shades
with acrylic paint
Show them the painting information on the provided PowerPoint.
Show them examples of what we will be creating.
Draw on the smart board shapes they will be using to create their artwork.
Then explain that the paper will be vertical, name and how to draw the design
with chalk pastel.
Draw example and show examples
Turn students to easel
Use new paper to demonstrate how to mix acrylic paint.
When exampling the paint remind them to use the proper size brush and when to
use a round brush verses a flat brush.
Ask if they have any questions and then have them go to their tables where paper
will be passed out if time provides otherwise you will hand it out and then they
can sit at their table.
Have them begin working on chalk pastel for their outlines
After they have completed their lines they can raise their hand to get approval to
start painting.
Student that finish early can do an early finishers art work
Remind Students to put their names on the back of art.
When 7 minute clean up alarm goes off explain clean up procedures or putting
away paint and placing paintbrushes in paintbrush hot tub.
Have student helpers collect paintbrushes and messy mats.
Have class sit in their chair and call red table to line up for teacher.
Second Class
Welcome class
Remind students of the process for creating their value and allow students to work
individually to finish their value projects if they havent finished.
Early finishers can create a drawing challenge.
Remind students wet projects go on the drying wrack and about clean up
procedures.
Continue with clean up procedures 7 minutes before the bell.
9. Assessment/Evaluation(s):
Each student will be evaluated by having completed his or her one 11 x 17 Value painting
with the use of tints, tones and shades. The final 11 x 17 project with a minimum of 6
values and use of good craftsmanship.
10. Accommodations:
Allow extra time for the student to complete their work. Information presented visually
such as on an overhead, posters, etc. Allow the student to stand at their desk and or/ table.
Small group cooperative learning. Allow wait time for thinking before they answer a
question. Use open-ended questions. Independent work is given to them in segments.
11. Use of Technology:
Incorporate the Smart board to demonstrate drawing the break out of their page.
Use projector to provide PowerPoint visual.
