Product Assessment - Small Cell

Integrating Alcatel-Lucents portfolio poses challenges, including R&D inefficiency, overlap and customer
concerns about rationalization.

Current Perspective
Nokias small-cell portfolio is a leader in the market.
The portfolio, composed of a mix of Nokia and former Alcatel-Lucent products combined via acquisition,
consists of 16 products covering a range of deployment scenarios: seven outdoor products, five for enterprises
and four for residences. Outdoors, Nokia offers its own Flexi Zone Outdoor Micro/Pico, Flexi Zone Pico-
Enhanced, Flexi Zone Mini Macro and the Flexi Lite (its only 3G outdoor small cell); added to this are three
former Alcatel-Lucent products -- TD-LTE and FD-LTE versions of the 9768 Metro Radio Outdoor and the
9768 Compact Metro Radio Outdoor. (Nokia no longer openly markets Alcatel-Lucents 9764 products.)
In the enterprise, Nokia offers the Flexi Zone Indoor Pico and Flexi Zone Indoor Multiband (G2) Pico as
well as three former Alcatel-Lucent products: the 9362 SOHO/Small Enterprise Femto Series V2.2 (formerly
known as the 9362 Enterprise Cell Series V2.2), the 9962 SOHO/Small Enterprise Multi-Standard Femto
v2.0 and the Distributed Antenna System Radio Frequency Module (DAS RFM). Also, this year Nokia
introduced its own in-house WiFi access points, with cloud-based controllers.
In residential markets, Nokia has replaced its own former in-house portfolio (the FAPr-hsp 5110 and FAPr-
hsp 5120) with Alcatel-Lucents: the 9361 Home Femto Askey V3, the ZyXEL - FMT3211, the ZyXEL -
FMT3251 and the 9961 Multi-Standard Home Femto V1 (formerly known as 9961 Multi-Standard Home
Cell V1).
To be sure, the former Alcatel-Lucent business benefits Nokia in many ways: Alcatel-Lucent had long been
a proactive leader in small cells, with healthy market traction that now belongs to Nokia. In addition,
Alcatel-Lucent had a stronger position in the residential market, which Nokia is preserving even replacing
its own previous residential products with Alcatel-Lucents. But make no mistake: Nokia had been aggressive
on small cells even before the acquisition, and its own native products in outdoor and enterprise segments
(not to mention WiFi) continue to dominate the combined portfolio, with a range of compelling attributes,
including power output, compact form factors and zone architecture options.
At the same time, the Alcatel-Lucent portfolio also poses some challenges for Nokia. Naturally, there is
some functional overlap to reconcile, which not only breeds inefficiency in the business (e.g., with product
management and sales efforts divided among duplicative areas) but also raises customer concerns about the
longevity of preferred products. In addition, rivals may use the performance of some Alcatel-Lucent products
against Nokia, such as the bulk of the 9768 Metro Radio Outdoor products. Then again, Nokia could
deflect such criticisms by pointing to superior performance in its own native Flexi Zone gear.

JJ Strengths and Weaknesses

Outdoor Power Output: Nokias outdoor small cells claim the highest maximum power level of any
vendor the 2x20 W of the Flexi Zone Mini Macro. This portfolio also represents the broadest range
of power levels, since the vendors 9768 Metro Radio Outdoor supports 2x0.5 W, the lowest figure
in the category. This breadth of options gives the portfolio claim to greater performance power than
rivals but also promises operators the ability to match power levels to specific needs, thereby optimizing
infrastructure investments.

Product Assessment - Small Cell

Combined Market Share: Acquiring Alcatel-Lucents small-cell business which had long distinguished
itself in terms of outdoor deployment wins gives Nokia considerable market share and the credibility
that comes with it. As of May 2016, Nokia claimed 111 wins for outdoor small cells in the combined
portfolio, 94 for enterprise and 57 residential exceeding most competitors.
Compact Outdoor Form Factors: On average, Nokias outdoor small cells are smaller than nearly all
rivals (matched but not exceeded by Huawei). And its Flexi Zone Outdoor Micro/Pico, with a volume
of 0.005 m3, is the smallest outdoor small cell in the six portfolios examined here. Compact designs can
make for easier deployment, be more aesthetically pleasing and connote efficient engineering.
Deployment Aids: Nokia and Alcatel-Lucent have both invested significantly in capabilities to help
operators deploy small cells, bolstering professional and managed services offerings and leveraging partners
specializing in street furniture. In September 2015, for example, Nokia launched its HetNet Engine
Room service for scaling small-cell deployments. And in 2016, Nokia promoted detachable RF modules
that allow operators to change the RF capabilities of deployed small cells (or deploy baseband first while
awaiting delivery of specific RF requirements), thus allowing rapid deployment. These efforts address a key
small-cell challenge deployment hurdles and their costs from multiple angles.
Flexi Zone Controller: Nokias Flexi Zone Controller, first announced in 2012, offers a way for operators
to scale indoor and outdoor small-cell networks, taking on some of the baseband functionality of each
picocell and treating a cluster of up to 100 picos (or up to 500 by the end of this year) as one logical cell.
This architecture promises to rein in IP routing needs as small-cell networks scale (avoiding the need
for IP addresses and X2 connections for each pico) and intelligently coordinate cell handoff activity. It
is also distinguished from some competing products by its multi-operator capabilities. In addition, the
Controller aligns well with Nokias Mobile Edge Computing solution, Liquid Applications, which can be
used to add valuable services potentially overcoming barriers to enterprise markets and contributing to a
broader 5G story.
Residential Portfolio: With four products (acquired from Alcatel-Lucent and developed with third-party
partners), Nokia has a much larger portfolio of residential small cells than the other vendors examined.
In addition, Nokia is the only vendor with a residential product that supports WiFi (the ZyXEL -
FMT3251). Though long beset with business model challenges, residential small cells are a very significant
part of the small cell market and add to a vendors credibility and market share in the space.

Weaknesses

Zone Controller Market Momentum: Nokia does not publicly quantify operator deployments of its
Flexi Zone Controller platform, allowing rivals to criticize Nokias progress with the kind of distributed,
hub-and-spoke enterprise solutions that have become perhaps the most hotly competitive segment of the
small-cell space. This contrasts with ongoing progress touted publicly for Ericssons Radio Dot System
and Huaweis LampSite, for example. Rivals could tie Nokias silence on this topic to the fact that its
Flexi Zone Indoor Controller did not become generally available until June 2015 -- long after most rival
solutions -- to argue that Nokia is lagging its rivals in this area.
Distributed Form Factors: On average, Nokias outdoor micro remote radio units are larger than similar
products from competitors. At 0.015 m3 and 0.013 m3, respectively, the FD-LTE and TD-LTE versions
of the 9768 Metro Radio Outdoor (formerly Alcatel-Lucent products) are the largest products in their
category. In addition, smallest Nokias Flexi Zone Indoor Picos (0.0028 m3 and 0.0031 m3), which can be
used in either standalone mode or with the Flexi Zone Controller, are each larger than all the distributed

end points sold by rivals. Smaller form factors can ease installation costs and help make products more
aesthetically unobtrusive.
Throughput Claims: Nokia declines to make specific public claims about the maximum throughput of
many of its small cells, saying instead that they offer the maximum defined by industry standards. While
there may be some logic in this approach, it may also allow competitors to gain attention with explicit
numbers in their marketing messages.
Alcatel-Lucent Portfolio Challenges: Integrating Alcatel-Lucents portfolio poses some challenges,
including (a) functional overlap between Nokia and former Alcatel-Lucent products, which can be
inefficient in terms of R&D costs and messaging and (b) concerns among operators that preferred
products might be discontinued. These concerns may influence purchase decisions, as Nokia has reported
occurring in some aspects of its business in the first half of 2016.
