1. INTRODUCTION
1.1 Scope:
This procedure explains method of "SURFACE FINISH AND PROTECTIVE
COATING SYSTEM" for High Rate Thickener, Flocculant Plant, Feed Tank,
Pipings, and Equipment.
1.2 Purpose:
The purpose of this specification is to set the minimum engineering standard for
shop and field application of paint and protective coatings on equipment parts. i.e.,
Tanks, Bridge, Dry Parts, Wet Parts, Technological Structures, Platforms, Stairs,
Walkways, Handrails Safety Guard, Drive......etc. as per Table 8.1

3. GENERAL REQUIREMENTS:
3.1 Shop Application:
The equipment items applicable/described in the table 8.1 shall be prepared
for coating and have the coating system applied before installation. Curing times
between successive coats shall be in Accordance with those recommended by the
Paint manufacturer.
3.1.1 Paint shall be applied in accordance with the Manufacturers recommendations. The
Manufacturers printed instructions for surface preparation, mixing, thinning,
buffering and application shall be considered as part of this specification and strictly
followed.
3.1.2 Paint shall be applied only on thoroughly dry, clean surfaces and during periods of
favourable weather for field painted surfaces unless otherwise allowed by the paint
Manufacturer.
3.1.3 For field painted surfaces, painting shall not be permitted when the ambient
temperature is below 10C (50F) or when freshly painted surfaces may be
damaged by rain, fog, hail, dust or condensation and/or when it can be anticipated
that these conditions will prevail during the drying period.
3.1.4 All materials shall be applied in smooth, even coats without runs, sags, bare spots,
orange peel, overspray or other blemishes.
Good quality graded silica sand of a mesh size shall be used to obtain the proper
anchor profile for the coating specified.
All cleaned surfaces shall be primed in the same day when cleaning is performed
by dust down before painting. Prior to blasting all weld areas for removal of weld flux,
spatter, slivers and other foreign objects, All sharp edges, fillets, corners and welds
shall be rounded by grinding.
Surface preparation and coating shall not be carried out in inadequate light or wet
weather and shall be carried out such that the surface being coated is free of moisture,
wind-borne or blast cleaning dust. All visible burrs, laminations, slivers, and scabs shall
be removed or repaired after blasting.
After blasting and immediately before spraying, dust and loose residues shall be
removed by brushing, blowing off with clean dry air, or vacuum cleaning.
5. Coating Application:
All cleaned surfaces shall be primed in the same day when cleaning is performed.
Cleaned surfaces left unprimed for one night or on which rain falls or dust settles shall
be re-cleaned before priming.
The method of application shall be governed per the paint manufacturer's
recommendations for the particular coating being applied. Each coat shall be applied
uniformly over the entire surface, runs, sags and drips shall be avoided. Coating shall be
free from pin holes, bubbles and holidays. When these occur, they shall be brushed out
immediately or material shall be removed and the surface re-painted .Upon completion of
fabrication, any damage to paint system shall be repaired.
The welded pipe supports (e.g. Pads) shall be painted with the same paint system
as the line, with the same final colour. In the case of non-painted lines, welded
support shall receive the most suitable paint system to the operating temperature of
the line.
