Lesson Idea Name: Mind Map your Slope Information

Content Area: Mathematics
Grade Level(s): 7th gade

Content Standard Addressed: MM1A1. Students will explore and interpret the characteristics of functions,
using graphs, tables, and simple algebraic techniques. a. Represent functions using function notation. g.
Explore rates of change, comparing constant rates of change (i.e., slope) versus variable rates of change.
Compare rates of change of linear, quadratic, square root, and other function families.
Technology Standard Addressed: 3. Knowledge Constructor Students critically curate a variety of resources
using digital tools to construct knowledge, produce creative artifacts and make meaningful learning
experiences for themselves and others. Students: a. plan and employ effective research strategies to locate
information and other resources for their intellectual or creative pursuits. b. evaluate the accuracy,
perspective, credibility and relevance of information, media, data or other resources. c. curate information
from digital resources using a variety of tools and methods to create collections of artifacts that demonstrate
meaningful connections or conclusions. d. build knowledge by actively exploring real-world issues and
problems, developing ideas and theories and pursuing answers and solutions.

Lesson idea implementation: Using the data and information created from the previous slope activities, the
students will compile their information, refine the data, search for additional related information, and create
a concept map using Inspiration. The teacher will be available to help guide them, make suggestions and help
locate appropriate websites. The students get to decide how to lay out the map and what information is
relevant, voice and choice.

This project should take 2 days to complete. There will be a short quiz for the students to demonstrate their
learning. Visual thinking is a learning style where the learner better understands and retains
information when ideas, words and concepts are associated with images . The lesson will conclude
with a collaborative effort of combining all the learners maps into a single class map that can be
printed and hung on the wall for a period of time. As the learners continue to expand their
understanding of slope and its applications, they can expand the class map.
