ine years to this day, I penned my first editors
column in the July 2008 Jacksonville Review.
That was 100 issues ago just days after my
wife, Jo, and I purchased the Review from Carolyn
Kingsnorth. After taking the reins, we had big shoes to
fill and got to work bringing our own style and vision
to the publication. The first major change was printing
in 4-color and replacing news on the cover with an
inspiring photo of life here. Since that first day on the
job, change has been a part of the equation, something
that youll notice in this issue.
In my first editorial, I wrote, I bring a new visionI
want this to be a continued source of news that
mirrors the positive changes happening in Southern
Oregon. As I suspected at the time, change was rapidly
coming to the region, as reflected in my statement,
Jacksonvilles modern-day pioneers include an influx
of entrepreneurs, opening new shops and businesses,
with a revived spiritfrom casual wine tasting rooms
to new shops, art galleries this influx of energy is
making Jacksonville a more dynamic and interesting
place to live. With that statement now in historys rear
view mirror, my prediction has come to pass, albeit with
negative and positive side effects.
Over the years, the Review has morphed into a maga-
paper, more lifestyle magazine than newspaper,
a move consciously crafted and carried out to stay
relevant in an ever-changing, digitally-focused world.
Rather than buy into the notion that print is dead, the
Review is very much alive, thanks in part to monthly
tweaks to improve the product. From day one, we
started with the end in mind, never afraid to invest
time, energy and money to improve the publication.
That spirit of change and improvement has never been
more in-play than in this issue, with all-new paper and a
new printing press to make the pages pop!
Truth be told, the most significant influence on this
publication has not come from me, but rather my
longtime graphics editor, Andrea Yancey, who started
working with me in 2010. Working quietly behind
the scenes for seven years now, Andreas attention to
detail and impactful graphic design and layout is the
reason the Review is the most professionally-produced
publication of its kind in the region. Its also the reason I
am so proud to put my name on this column.
As long-term readers have seen, Andrea and I have
rebranded the Review many times, not only with 4-color,
but with ever-improving layouts, logos, design and more.
Along the way, we built www.JacksonvilleReview.com and
a Facebook page; both shining examples of the successful
blending of the print and digital worlds. Believe me,
PRINT is far from deadits alive and well. Oh, and
along the way, Andrea and I became business partners
and launched Southern Oregon Wine Scene, the finest print
publication showcasing the wineries in the region.
Of course, none of this would matter without YOU,
the readers who inspire us to produce a monthly
COMMUNITY publication that reflects our wonderful
town. As I have stated in countless columns over nine
years, I am most grateful to our CONTRIBUTORS
and ADVERTISING clients, all of whom comprise
an amazing group with passion and commitment
to Jacksonville. Without their support, none of this
would be possible.
Finally, back in 2008, I stated, The Review will
continue working to be a part of the solution
by covering important issues as it showcases
Jacksonvilles outstanding citizens, history and
happenings. It is my sincere hope to have lived-up
to the responsibility of being the publisher of the
Jacksonville Review and to be a positive influence on Our
Small Town with Big Atmosphere!

 Celebrate the Heritage of Lavender in Southern Oregon!
Southern Oregon Lavender Festival Continues July 7-9
With our sunny, dry summers and need to find beautiful landscape materials that
dont provide a smorgasbord for the abundant deer population, lavender has become a
Southern Oregon landscape favorite bordering many streets and yards. But lavender is
not native to Oregon. Where did it come from and how has it become so popular here?
Lavender is native to the hills surrounding the Mediterranean Sea. It thrives in
the rocky sun-drenched soils of Greece, Italy, southern France and northern Africa.
Known for its antiseptic qualities, lavender was used for washing and medicinal
purposes. History indicates the Romans carried it with them as they conquered
Europe. In the Middle Ages, lavender was a favorite of Queen Elisabeth and she
encouraged the development of lavender farms. Queen Victoria further popularized
the herb in England in the late 1800s and early 1900s. The Shakers and others brought
lavender from England to the US in the late 1700s.
There are now, world-wide, about 30 species and hundreds of cultivars, all
belonging to the genus Lavandula.
Oregon has long-been a pioneer in the lavender industry. Oregonians Dr. Don
Roberts, Andy & Melissa Van Hevelingen and Jim and Dotti Becker are world-
renowned lavender experts and have developed many of the popular lavender
cultivars used today. Jim and Dotti Becker came to Southern Oregon in 1977 and
worked at a produce farm in Williams where their citified family learned how to
grow food for the first time. They became
hooked on plants and convinced the
farmer that they worked for to add herbs
and flowers to the fruits and vegetables in
his gardens. The first plants they collected
for their own enjoyment were scented

Forever was planted in 2011 by John and Bonnie Rinaldi but was recently sold to Bob
Sibbitt and Caryn Gehlmann. Bob retired to the Applegate Valley several years ago
from northern California. Caryn is an aromatherapist who works with numerous clients
in the hospital, hospice and healthcare industry. The lavender farm will be a great
complement to her existing business, Essential Three.
This year they will be continuing the work started by
the Rinaldis and will be adding their own touches
to the farmincluding lavender ice cream! Lavender
Fields Forever is one of the only farms in the country
where you can harvest and distill your own lavender
essential oil. Unique, all-natural handmade lavender
products are available in their farm store along with
U-pick bouquets. Many lavender classes are offered at
the farm throughout the summer.
In the heart of the Applegate, on Thompson Creek
Road, you will find The English Lavender Farm run
by Derek and Sue Owen. Lavender was first planted
on the farm using natural, organic methods in 2012
in fields previously used to grow Christmas trees.

Just in time to celebrate July 4th, the
reconstruction of the US Hotel balcony is
expected to be completed by the last week
of June. In early June, the Review took a
tour of the construction site with Jackson
County Commissioner Rick Dyer, Mayor
Paul Becker, City Administrator Jeff Alvis
and Mayor Paul Becker.

to note that a cooperative effort between
Jacksonville city officials and Jackson

noted that worked progressed mostly as
anticipated, despite having to tent the
building in a plastic bubble when lead-
based paint had to be removed early on.

Lyn Boening, a Founding Board Member, speaks at the groundbreaking regarding the
dedication and commitment of the 14 original Board Members, many of whom were able to
attend the ceremony. These Board Members developed the vision that became the dream we
realized today. She gives special tribute to Viola Davis, the leader of Jacksonville Seniors,
Inc., who was instrumental in starting the Thrift Store and also starting the Jacksonville
Community Center as a separate organization. Lyns theme is community and the word
unity within the word community and how this project was and continues to be a unifying
project and a truly community-wide effort.
Rock star, showstopper and awesome are just some of the words attendees used to describe
12-year-old Sarah Metwally and her speech. Speaking from her heart with enthusiasm, energy,
humor and joy, Sarah wants a Community Center to host a chess club and be a gathering place
where teens who leave Jacksonville to attend middle and high school during the daytime can
meet in town on the weekends and in the evenings. Sarah also believes young people and adults
have a lot to offer to each other so she wants opportunities for them to interact in classes like
cooking and activities like ping pong or hiking.

The creation of new objects, either real
or abstract, the changing of matter such
as clay, fabric or glass into something
different, the association of images that
reminds us of another place or time...
these are talents that provide artists with
a special connection to other human
beings, a way of communicating and
possibly a new way of seeing.
Art Presence is a non-profit cooperative
gallery with a cadre of two- and three-
dimensional artists. Presenting their
subject matter through their creations,
they provide viewers with new or
different perspectives, evoking emotions
and enriching both their lives and ours.
We are now making grand
improvements to our gallery space. In
The Smash Comedy Hit November, we plan to close the gallery for
a bit in order to sheetrock the walls and
replace the carpeting. We are emboldened
to move ahead with these plans thanks to
an newly-extended three-year lease, just
approved by the City Council.
In the meantime and in the future, Art
Presence is committed to providing every
artistic experience to the community of
Jacksonville and beyond. As we grow

Festival bringing in people from all over

Randall Theatre open all year-long, we

numbers from a study done by Americans
for the Arts (the nations leading nonprofit
organization for advancing the arts in
America) to show the economic impact of
the nonprofit arts and culture industry on

transportation, overnight lodging (one
night only), and other miscellaneous
purchases. With 64,000 people attending
Britt shows alone in 2016, you can do the
math. Even if only 50% of the attendees
took in the sights, sounds, and action of
Jacksonville during Britt time, the city
businesses saw an estimated $549,760
increase in business between the months
of June through September. Although the
Randall Theatre won't generate numbers
like that (at least, not soon), the impact
to local businesses over a years time is
exciting. The Randall Theatre can help
local businesses generate an estimated
$300,000 in added revenue in total based
on the numbers provided by Americans
for the Arts. The more you can spread the
word about the Randall, the Britt and all
the other wonderful things Jacksonville
has to offer, the more you help your local
community thrive. Buy a ticket and take
in a show, but don't forget how much
impact you can have on all the other
businesses by making a day or night of it.
The arts are important for culture but are
also important to help keep a community
healthy. A healthy community is a very
happy community.

A Superhero(ine) for Our Times
C
omic books once were
considered kid stuff. No one
over sixteen admitted to reading extensive collateral damage, leaving in
them, let alone dared to dream of
watching his or her favorite superheroes
on the big screen. A theatrical serial
starring Kirk Alyn as Superman arrived
in the 1940s, but it was sequestered in
kids matinees. The Fifties television
series Adventures of Superman, starring
George Reeves, also aimed at a younger
audience, as did the Batman television
series a decade later, with its corny
dialogue and comics-influenced graphics
during fight scenes (Bam! Pow!).
But everything changed in 1978 when
Superman: The Movie debuted. Featuring a
charismatic performance by Christopher
Reeve, the films ad-copy line read: You
will believe a man can fly! Hollywood
executives, noting the

films $300 million gross,
interpreted it as, You will
believe a superhero movie
can make a ton of money!
Over the next decade,
three Superman sequels
were produced, although
none of them lived up
to the originals promise
of profits. Hoping to
tantalize female fans,
Hollywood offered up
Supergirl in 1984, but the
poorly plotted film didnt please anyone.
This was Strike One against female
superheroes. Five years later, another
male arrived on the scene. Tim Burtons
Batman blew everyones socks off, and
inspired numerous sequels, including
one that featured Batmans nemesis,
Catwoman. The feline femme fatale
got her own movie in 2004and was
universally panned. Strike Two against
female superheroes.
Since, comic book-based movies
have grown increasingly dark in
tone, reflecting the evolving nature
of the literary genre on which theyre
based. Browse through a bin at your
neighborhood comic book store today
and youre more likely to see gritty
graphic novels than the kid-friendly
periodicals of old. Even Superman has
grown dark.
The mandate of all superheroes,
cinematic or pulp, is to defend Earth
against domestic and/or intergalactic

Pioneer Profiles: The Glorious Fourth!

In the mid-1800s, the promise of gold and free land lured fortune seekers and settlers to the
newly-formed Oregon Territory. They were soon followed by merchants who amassed their
own wealth selling supplies to the miners and farmers. This ongoing series shares the stories of
these pioneers and their times.
W
ell into the 20th Century, the
Fourth of July was a bigger
U.S. holiday than Christmas.
Long before Congress declared July 4th
an official holiday in 1870, John Adams
had written to his wife Abigail shortly
after the signing of the Declaration of
Independence in 1776 that the occasion
ought to be solemnized with pomp and
parade, with shews, games, sports, guns,
bells, bonfires, and illuminations from
one end of the continent to the other.
And so it was and is.
In the midst of the Revolutionary
War in 1777, Philadelphia held large
Independence Day festivities. The
Continental Congress feasted at an official
dinner, gave toasts, and arranged a 13-gun expectant crowd all anxious to do
salute. Residents celebrated with speeches, honor to their yearly holiday. Vehicles
parades and fireworks. A year later, with
France now allied with the colonies,
even the American army celebrated the

his troops a double
ration of rum and
ordered a cannon
salute to mark the
occasion.
After the
Revolutionary
War, Americans
continued to
commemorate
Independence Day
in celebrations
that allowed the
new nations
emerging political
leaders to create
a feeling of unity.

1830s typically started with an artillery
reveille at dawna fuselage of cannons
or muskets shot into the airand the
ringing of town bells. A parade of militia, Ben Beekman, impersonating George
bands, wagons, notables, school children, Washington, and Master Eddy Farmer,
and other marchers would begin
around 9 a.m. The program following
would usually include an opening
prayer, the reading of the Declaration
of Independence, and a lengthy oration
given by a local or state dignitary.
After the speeches, men would
continue the celebration at the local
saloons while the women would go
home. The men would hoist 13 regular
toaststhe first for the current President
and the second for George Washington.
The 13th toast would be for women.
Voluntary toasts would continue for as
long as the men could stand (or stagger).
This form of celebration would surely
have appealed to at least Jacksonvilles
male miners, settlers, and merchants
including those foreign born. Many had
left poverty or oppressive circumstances,
and the concept of freedom and
opportunity would have been a strong
drawand alcohol seems to have always
been part of any non-work day.
This pattern of celebration continued
until the Civil War. As the country became Glee Club; a reading of the Declaration
more divided, Fourth of July celebrations
became more militaristic. The men would
march through the streets armed to the
teeth, followed by young boys marching
behind them with sticks to mimic their
actions. There would also be sham battles
where participants portrayed what was
occurring on battlefields.
Following the Civil War, celebrations
shifted from militarism to escapism.
Picnics and barbecues became popular.
Fundraisers for orphans and widows
replaced sham battles. Baseball gained
popularity, regional leagues formed,
and towns held Independence Day
baseball tournaments. While readings
of the Declaration of Independence
and orations were still featured,
Independence Day festivities increasingly
included fireworks, contests, games, and
shows, with celebrations often reflecting
local amusements.
The Oregon Sentinel provided a vivid
full page description of Jacksonvilles
Centennial Independence Day
celebration on July 4, 1876.
Citizens were awakened at sunrise
with cannon fire. Soon after the streets
were thronged with a joyous and
loaded with paraphernalia to decorate
the grounds and supplies to meet the
wants of the expected crowd hurried
to William Bybees
grove, the site of the
local racetrack and
many Jacksonville
celebrations.

formed in front of
the Courthouse.
Local dignitaries
in appropriate
uniform and
mounted on
prancing and
gaily caparisoned
steeds headed
the procession,
followed closely
by a seven-piece
brass band playing
national airs. A
parade highlight
came nextan
ornamented car
drawn by four
milk-white horses
contained 13
young ladies, the
youth and beauty
of the town, dressed in Colonial attire
and representing the original colonies.
They were accompanied by Master
portraying General U.S. Grant.
The next entry was a large wagon
containing 38 little girls dressed in
white, carrying miniature flags, and
labeled in broad sashes, each bearing
the name of a State. At the front of the
car were the Goddess of Liberty and
the Angel of Peace. As the wagon made
its way to Bybees grove, the girls sang
various patriotic songs, each bringing
cheer upon cheer from the crowd.
The parade continued with a carriage
containing the days orator, reader, and
chaplain; members of the Jacksonville
Odd Fellows Lodge in full regalia;
the Jackson County Cavalry; and
the Mulligan Guards, an Infantry
Company of boys aged 10 to 15. Then
came citizens in carriages and wagons, on
horseback and on foot, lengthening the
procession to nearly a mile.a
Upon arriving at the racetrack
grandstand, the exercise of the day
commenced: a prayer by Rev. Moses
Williams; the national anthem sung by the
of Independence; and an hour-and-a-half
oration by Professor J.W. Merrit, deemed
to have been the finest oration ever
spoken in Jackson County and frequently
interrupted by merited applause.
After further music by the band and
Glee Club, the crowd dispersed to enjoy
dinner and the various amusementsa
huge swing, a dancing floor, military
exhibitions, cannon fire, clowns known
as the Fool Killers who entertained the

Preparing the Cemetery for Memorial
Day is always a challenge, however,
given the weather we faced over the
winter and into spring, it was even a
bigger challenge. I can't begin to express
my appreciation to Cemetery Sexton
Richard Shields and his assistant Eric
Villarreal for all they did to ensure the
Cemetery was ready and presentable
to welcome families and visitors. I
even saw them working up on the hill
mowing grass and filling in low spots
on their days off. While their job duties
and responsibilities do not provide
for full-time care of the Cemetery, it
is amazing what they manage to do in
their limited, budgeted hours directed
toward the Cemetery.
Flags and Memorial Day Meet and

for helping place some 385 flags on the
gravesites of those Veterans who rest in
the Jacksonville Cemetery, on May 27.
The flags purchased by the Friends of
Jacksonville's Historic Cemetery will be
maintained and remain in place until
after Veterans Day on November 11. It is
such an honor to be able to remember our
men and women who served our country
in this small but important way.

29 to assist families and visitors with

Digging Jacksonville: Analyzing Musket Balls

lead ingots from Rogue River War archaeological sites.
T
he Rogue River War of 1855-
56 marks a pivotal point in
the settlement of Oregon. The
conflict centered on the years of hostile
and violent encounters between the
Native Americans and settlers during the
Gold Rush in Southern Oregon. The War
was fought across southwestern Oregon
and concluded with the removal of a
majority of Rogue River and Southern
Oregon Native Americans to the Siletz
and Grand Ronde reservations.
The Southern Oregon University
Laboratory of Anthropology (SOULA)
has been working on data recovery and
excavations from Rogue River War sites
since 2004. In their work, many lead
musket balls were uncovered from across
the Rogue Valley, including Jacksonville.
While musket balls could be purchased,
it was more common to make your own.
To do this, lead would be melted in a
crucible, then poured into the hole on top
of a mold. The lead used was often cut
pieces of ingot, which were blocks of lead,
or even movable type pieces from printing
presses. Once cooled, the bullet would be
extracted and the sprue, which is a bit of
projecting metal, and parting lines were
filed off, leaving behind the round bullet.
Throughout southwestern Oregon and
even in Jacksonville, archaeologists have
recovered musket balls and lead shot,
as well as ingots, types, crucibles, and
slag, which are all associated with the
manufacturing of ammunition.
For my senior thesis, I analyzed a
few dozen musket balls using X-Ray
Fluorescence (XRF). This work was
done in partnership with the Medford
Bureau of Land Management (BLM). The
purpose of the research project was to see
how much could be learned about lead
artifacts through XRF analysis and what
the advantages and disadvantages of the
technique were. We also wanted to look at
the importance elemental composition may
have in the study of battlefield archaeology,
specifically, the Rogue River War.

X-Ray Fluorescence (XRF) is used to
identify the presence and concentrations
of elements within a given sample. I
used XRF to see if I could learn what
was being melted into musket balls, the
amount of lead found in the artifacts, and
how the composition might have differed
between the musket balls used and
made by the citizen volunteers and the
US army versus the Native Americans.
X-Ray Fluorescence is commonly used in
archaeology in nondestructive analytical
technique. XRF has been widely used to
determine materials and manufacturing
techniques, for authentication of items
and the location of source materials.
Archaeologists often use XRF to test soils,
ceramics, projectile points, and in this
case, musket balls!
The XRF data generated from
this project provided a multitude of
information. We were able to determine
that while we label these artifacts as
lead, it actually only represents less
than 50% of the total composition.
Through the XRF testing, and the
analysis that followed, its clear that the
majority of the artifacts were comprised
of similar elemental concentrations across
sites. At this point, it does not appear
that the citizen volunteers and US Army
were accessing different sources of
ammunition than the Native Americans.

Focus on Hanley Farm

H
owever one refers to the Civil
Warthe War to Preserve
the Union, War of the
Rebellion, War to make Men Free,
Freedom War, or the War Between the
Statesit preserved the United States as
one, indivisible, nation.
In an 1889 study, performed by
Union soldiers William Fox and
Thomas Livermore, it was reported that
approximately 620,000 soldiers died in
the Civil War. Included in that number
are two notable Oregon citizensColonel
Edward Dickinson Baker and Captain
James W. Lingenfelter.
In civilian life, James Lingenfelter
was a successful lawyer in Jacksonville,
Oregon. While visiting in the East, the
war started and he enlisted to serve with
Colonel Baker. In time, Lingenfelter
became the Captain of Company B, 71st
Pennsylvania Infantry. In September,
1861, Captain Lingenfelter was shot in
the head while on picket duty, and the
first Oregonian to die in the Civil War.
On October 21, 1861, one month after
Captain Lingenfelter, Colonel Edward
Dickinson Baker was killed while leading
Union troops at the Battle of Balls Bluff
near Leesburg, VA. Colonel Baker was
a close friend of Abraham Lincoln, and
served as a U.S. Army Colonel during the
Mexican-American War, as well as the
Civil War. Baker was Oregons second
United States Senator. He was the only
sitting senator to be killed in the Civil War.

The Jacksonville Dam and Reservoir:
One Year Later

This time of year marks the one year
anniversary of the decommissioning of
the former Jacksonville Reservoir dam
and spillway. Today it is being developed
as a major feature of the Jacksonville
Forest Park trails and
recreation area. The
pond remaining from
the reservoir is still
there, surrounded
by rapidly-growing
willows and a large
numbers of birds,
ducks, geese, and large
turtles. The new stream
outlet from the pond
is a stretch of Jackson Creek. It is now
filled with large boulders as it courses
down the steep slope of the old spillway
location then plunges down thirty feet to
move slowly and gently through the new
Jackson Creek Wetlands.
The Jackson Creek Wetlands is the
name given to the area of the Forest Park
starting with the pond, the old earth fill
dam, and the two acres between the foot
of the dam and the entrance kiosk of the
Forest Park. The area below the dam is
now a unique ecological and historical
display of native plants and piles of
big rocks. The rocks remain from the
powerful blasts of the gold miners water
cannons when they washed and sluiced
gold from the hillsides. Tucked just
below a steep slope is a 400-foot stretch
of Jackson Creek that meanders slowly
on its way past the parking lot below.
Most of the Wetlands below the dam
is a natural environment, nurtured
by a year-round underground spring.

trapped in the sand and gravel that filled
the old reservoir. Already designated
as a wetlands area by the state, the
Jacksonville Parks
Department, Forest
Park Volunteers,
eagle scouts, and
students have built
a trail through the
wetlands to feature
this beautiful part of
the Forest Park.
The area has
been developed by
volunteers. In addition to time spent
by the Forest Park Volunteers, the main
trail was built by an eagle scout pulling
blackberries and spreading gravel on
the trail. This was followed by two work
parties of fifteen students from Ruch
School who built another graveled loop
trail passing by three small ponds. Over
three hundred volunteer hours have
been given to date.
Deeply shaded by large trees, the city
has planted many native plants including
mock orange, red twig dogwood, currant,
elderberry, spiraea, and salal. It abounds
with birds and ducks attracted to the
water. The upper stream side and the
lower face of the dam have been planted
with over 200 pine and oak seedlings.
The Jackson Creek Wetlands is easily
visited as it is traversed on the one side
by the Rail Trail and bisected by the
Norling Trail. Visitors can park at the
park entrance parking lot and within
a few feet enter this very special new
addition to the Forest Park.

ndependence Day is at hand.
Congratulations and Happy
Birthday America. Its been quite a
ride for 241 years. When the Continental
Congress formalized the Declaration of
Independence with the signature of John
Hancock, they took a step so bold and
daring and went where no others had
gone before achieving independence
from a mother colony. Today, there are
those who dismiss the Declarations
author, Thomas Jefferson, as a southern
plantation slave owner, but without
him there is no such declaration and
no American Revolution. His words,
All men are created equal, resonates
throughout the ages and strikes at
the heart of every tyrannical form of
government, and their proponents
who believe they can rule without the
consent of the people. Democracy does
not consist of a ruling class of elites from
Harvard University or Goldman Sachs
telling us how to eat, how to behave, or
how to live. To quote Lincoln, Democracy
envisions government of the people,
by the people, and for the people.
The Declaration was actually adopted
by the delegates in Philadelphia on
July 2nd. The next day, John Adams
wrote a lengthy heartfelt message to
his wife Abigail in which he said, The
Second Day of July 1776, will be the
most memorable Epocha, in the History
of America.I am apt to believe that
it will be celebrated, by succeeding
Generations, as the great anniversary
Festival. It ought to be commemorated,
as the Day of Deliverance by solemn Acts
of Devotion to God Almighty. It ought to
be solemnized with Pomp and Parade,
with Shews, Games, Sports, Guns, Bells,
Bonfires and Illuminations from one
End of this Continent to the other from
this Time forward forever more. (The
capitalization is his.)
The next year (1777) marked the first
such observance as Adams envisioned
and was reported as such in the
Virginia Gazette.

 Jacksonville Author Publishes Book on Bach
Jacksonville resident David Gordon is best known locally for his popular Jacksonville series,
"Pioneer History in Story and Song.David has forged a versatile international career as
operatic tenor, lecturer, author, teacher, and classical recording artist.
David is renowned for his vivid performances of the music of J. S. Bach on recordings and
in hundreds of concerts throughout North America, Europe, and Japan. In 2016 the St. Louis
Post-Dispatch called him one of the great interpreters of the evangelist of our time. For two
decades he has been the lecturer at the Carmel Bach Festival.
J. S. Bach came into my life in 1971. I was
a fledgling opera singer thinking about
Mozart and Rossini when I was hired to
sing the narrator role (the "Evangelist")
in the two-hour St. John Passion. Bach's
amazing music for tenor grabbed me with
its "high lonesome" sound and dramatic
potential. Bach became my friend, and
as I studied and performed dozens of his
compositions over the years, I enjoyed
learning about the man himself: he's way
more interesting than the stern-faced
marble bust on the piano.
He wasn't a superstar: in the early
1700s Bach was a salaried employee with
a large family living in an apartment in a
major city. I was curious about daily life
in those days. What did a middle-class
German family eat, drink,
and wear? How did they
cook, or bathe, or illuminate
their homes at night? How
many churches were inside
the city walls, and how
many taverns?
Answers to these
questions often help make
Bach more real for us. They
also remind us that the
"Baroque" era in Europe
was the "Colonial" era on
this side of the Atlantic and
that Bach and we are all
part of the continuum of
human history.

After years of lecturing about all this,
I've just published The Little Bach Book, a
collection of my very favorite material.
It's 150 pages of historical vignettes,
scholarly details, bits of pathos, glimpses
of real life, tales of beer, coffee and
tobacco, and more. The book is not about
Bach's musicit is about his career and
the everyday world around him. He had
a hard life, like most musicians in the
18th century, and I believe by learning
more about their lives we deepen our
connections with their music and maybe
with our own past.
The scenes from Bachs life include
the time he asked to quit his job and was
thrown in jail for a month; his Friday night
orchestra gig in a fashionable downtown
cafe restaurant; and the outdoor torch
lit concert where his trumpeter died of
smoke inhalation. I also honor the deaths
of Bach's first wife and ten of his children,
and the sad widowhood of his second
wife Anna Magdalena, who outlived him
by a decade.
300 years ago Bach wanted to entertain,
stir the heart, and enlighten. In his honor, I
hope The Little Bach Book will do the same.
I'm especially delighted that the
very first announcement of the book's
publication appears in these paragraphs
in the Jacksonville Review.

12th Annual Fall Classic Car Show
September 9th at Bigham Knoll Campus
What do you get when you combine
some of the nicest show cars and trucks
from Oregon and Northern California
with historic Jacksonville and Bigham
Knoll Campus? Answer: The 12th Annual
Fall Classic Car Show hosted by Rogue
Valley Corvettes! The Fall Classic brings
families, fun, music, food and drinks and
car enthusiasts together on September
9th. This is the second year the show is
being held at Bigham Knoll, which is
large enough to accommodate the record
turnout experienced at last years show.
We had a wonderful turnout and
an outstanding show at Bigham Knoll
last year, says Fall Classic Chairman,
John Warren. Our car show participants
loved being on the grassy field at the
campus, which helps the cars stay cleaner
and keeps the crowd cooler during the
day. We are limiting our show to 200 cars
this year, as this is a very manageable
number of cars without overwhelming
the streets and campus. Feedback from
our past participants tells us that an event
this size is very desirable. Many of our
car show participants have reminded us
that bigger is not always better.
The Fall Classic Car Show has grown
over the past eleven years in popularity
and attendance outgrowing Heritage
Motors, Airport Chevrolet and TC
Chevy in Ashland. Warren continues,

the ambiance of the day. The grassy
athletic field is nestled between hop
yards on one side and a vineyard on the
other side. Along with our food vendors
is the Schoolhaus Brewhaus, located
inside the historic main campus building.

many wonderful shops and restaurants is
only a short walk from the car show.
Changes Afoot at Ashland Partners
In 1992, Mel Ashland started Ashland
Partners (AP) out of his home in
Jacksonville. It was the first CPA firm
to provide verification services to
the newly-formed Global Investment
Performance Standards (GIPS). GIPS
are finance industry

Rogue River jet boat rides and the
Shakespeare Festival.
Other than to have fun, visit with
friends and look at incredibly beautiful
automobiles, Warren says, the purpose
of the Fall Classic is to support and
raise funds for SkillsUSA. Net proceeds
benefit the SkillsUSA programs in
Jacksonville, Josephine and Klamath
counties. SkillsUSA is a program to
help high school students learn trade
skills, compete for scholarships and
advance to higher levels of education
in varying fields. Their mission is to
empower its students to become world-
class workers, leaders and responsible
American citizens. The money that our
car club raises will help these students
travel to regional and national SkillsUSA
competitions to compete for scholarships.
In the past eleven years Rogue Valley
Corvettes has raised over $90,000 for this
program. We invite car show participants
and the public to have a fun day with
other enthusiasts to help raise even more
money for this great program.

with them.

appy 4th of July! In July,
we Americans celebrate our
freedoms, our self-government,
and our bond as citizens. It should be
celebrated. No country in history has
achieved so much or has contributed
so much to the well-being of so many.
Despite occasional missteps, the US
has been and remains a positive force
for humanity. But, we are not here to
lecture. We are here to talk investing! As
investment advisors, we do not limit our
scope in search of returns. We have scoured
the globe looking for opportunities. While
we find interesting investments that exist
beyond our borders, we continue to believe
that the best place to invest is still the USA.
Why? Lets explore.
Investing is a confluence of short-term
and long-term trends. Some of these
benefit domestic investments and some
benefit foreign investments. First, lets
look at some tailwinds:
1. The US has a huge head start. The
phenomenal growth of the past
century has provided industry that
today is a dominant force in the
world. Over of the Fortune Global
500 companies are domiciled in the
US, despite only 4.2% of the world
population. The US has the most
liquid and well-developed capital
markets in the world.
2. The US dollar remains the worlds
reserve currency. The US dollar
has been strong for several years, and
the underlying (relative) strength of
the US economy is a big reason why.
Many global transactions continue to
be priced in dollars. When considering
global investments, currency is an
important component for investors.
3. Higher Education. The US higher
education system is unparalleled. Of
the 25 highest ranked universities
by U.S. News in 2017, 20 are here
at home. Notably, our top ranked
universities continue to attract the
top students from around the globe.
A few notable examples include:
California Institute of Technology
enrolls 27% international students,
Stanford enrolls 22% internationals
students, and Harvard is at 25%
(source: Times Higher Education).
Clearly, our education system is
valued globally.
4. Property Rights. Perhaps the most
important issue for investors to
consider globally is property
rights. Property rights suggest
confidence that your investment will
be protected by local institutions.
Will the government confiscate
or nationalize your investment?
Will your investment be subject to
inflationary devaluation? Two years
ago, the Seattle Times reported that
home buyers from China bought $27
billion worth of houses in the U.S.
While this might have partially been
a bet on the U.S. housing market,
this was just as likely a bet against
keeping assets in China.

allocating capital right here in the USA,

still count on.

on one lot and un-financeable homes; all
niche properties that take the right buyer.
But it only takes one!
Over $1 million dollar properties
In Jackson County alone, we have 67
properties currently listed for sale at over
$1 million each, and about 26 are selling
per year. Although the million dollar
market has been doing much better than
in years past, we still have 2.5 years of
inventory. Southern Oregon appeals
to retirees and, in general, they are
downsizing when they move here and
are not buying $1 million plus homes. On
the one hand, the over $1 million market
is stronger than it has ever been, but on
the other hand, it will take years to sell
the inventory we currently have listed.
So not everything sells in a hot real
estate market, but we should be thankful
we have a hot market as we can all
remember that from 2007-2012 every
home had a difficult time selling. Our
real estate market today is a reflection of
our increasingly growing value-add that
attracts more escapees and retirees. They
have discovered what we already know...

search results.
Here are some ways you may know if
your home is priced too high:

door, you wont be getting any offers.

a good amount of traffic coming
through your door and no one is
submitting an offer, there are three
reasons why this could be: price,
condition or location. If the condition
and location are good but you have
received no offers, your property is
most likely priced too high.
FeedbackOnce an agent shows
a home, theyre solicited for
feedback. If youre receiving
feedback stating that the price is
too high, then you should seriously
consider that feedback.
Broker open housesyour agent
can host what is called a broker
open house, an open house for other
agents where theyll walk through
and give their feedback. If theres
a consistent pattern of other agents
stating your home is priced too high,
then it likely is.
Here are the issues that can arise from
overpricing:
Statistics from the National
Association of Realtors show the
longer your home sits on the market,
the lower the price it will sell for.
The longer your home sits on the
market, the less traffic youll get
over time. This fluctuates depending
on the price range, time of year,
available comparable inventory, etc.
Another item that needs to be
considered is that most buyers are
not paying with cash, and will need
a mortgage with the buyers lender
requiring an appraisal. If your
appraisal comes in lower than the
contracted price, youll likely need
to renegotiate certain terms with
the buyer.
The market price for a home is
determined by what a buyer is willing to
pay for it. There are certainly things that
homeowners can do to influence buyers
perceptions of their homes value and
therefore increase the price buyers are
willing to pay, but ultimately the buyers
will set the price.

an I Retire, yet? This is a
question we hear most often
from people in our baby-
boomer age bracket of around 60+
years old. The answer is generally, Yes,
you can retire, but what will be the
consequences?
Questions to ask yourself before you
retire:
Will I have enough money to sustain
my current lifestyle if I dont have
income from working?
How long will my money last?
What will I do with my time if I am
not working?
Are there other benefits that may be
lost if I retire? (For example: group
health insurance from an employer.)
Can I tolerate the extra time Ill be
spending with my spouse?
The answers to these questions will
depend on many factors. Creating a budget
by writing down a list of your current
expenses and debt, your anticipated future
expenses and a list of income sources is a
good beginning to determine the answers.
1. Have to expenses: Make a list
of monthly expenses that you
absolutely must have. That list might
include your monthly rent/mortgage,
cost of utilities, food and clothing,
health insurance, loan payments and
incidental expenses for items that
you must have.
2. Want to expenses: Make a list of
monthly expenses (estimate) of
things or activities that you want
above and beyond those items that
you must have.
3. What will be the source of your
income? Will you have guaranteed
sources of income, such a Social
Security, pensions and/or annuity
distributions? Will you have non-
guaranteed sources of income, such
as rental income (only guaranteed
as long as you have a tenant)
and/or investment income (not
guaranteed because the market can
fluctuate up and down)?
Now, put the numbers together.
Ideally, your guaranteed sources of
income will meet or exceed your have
to list of expenses. If not, then you
may have to make some adjustments to
expenses or to income.

always drove was that 1958
Chevrolet Apache. Dads outfit
had a lot of vehicles but I usually got the
green Chevy. I had a habit of running
hard, and the equipment I used just
wore out faster. So, dad
had me drive the most
bullet-proof rig the
company owned. It was
all business with a solid
steel 8 stepside bed, 4
on the floor, solid rear
axle and heavy-duty split
rims. Power came from
a cast iron small block
283 V8 with not a computer in sight. It
was the Deluxe edition and came with
a chrome front bumper, a radio and a
heater. Yep. No power windows, seats
or door locks. No Sirius, Bluetooth, air
conditioning or air bags. Just a work
truck that ran like the dickens and did
everything we asked of it for years. I
dont know how many miles it had when
dad sold it, because the odometer quit at
about 25,000 on its 4th or 5th time around
and I ran it another 2 years after that.

The obvious heat of the summer
months reminds me of an entire range
of plants we sometimes overlook in our
landscapes. For those of you looking
to add an unexpected touch to your
landscape, succulents are great options.
Succulents are described as plants that
have adapted to arid or low moisture
environments by storing moisture in
their leaves, stems, and roots. The beauty
of these plants is that they require less
regular maintenance than other varieties
of house or garden plants.
We all recognize cacti as some of
the most common succulents. What
some may not know is that while all
cacti are succulents, not all succulents
are cacti. While cacti have spines,
they also often display large, colorful,
beautiful flowers. Other varieties of
succulents include air plants which
are characterized by having little or no
direct contact with soil. The texture and
color profile that succulents contribute
to a landscape can be quite striking.
We live in one of the most beautiful
areas of the world; our climate, mountains,
forests, lakes and rivers are unique. I hope
you take in all the natural beauty around
you this summer and get inspired!

spraying a plant that has senesced
(deteriorated with age) and died back for
the season will do no harm, and be a waste
of time and money. The cells through which
the formulation must pass have died, and
made further passage impossible. The same
thing happens if you overload your mixture
with more active ingredient than you need,
or add other formulations. (Never do this
unless you know what youre doing). You
basically kill the initial cells upon contact,
keeping the formulation from passing
further into the root system, depriving you
of your desired result. Youll see what is
referred to as top kill, but the roots will
still be viable, ready to sprout again, driving
you further to the brink of insanity!
Read the label. The label is the law!
Most herbicide formulations call for
quite low concentrations for foliar
applications. Mixtures using 2%-3% are
not uncommon, from which you should
not deviate. This equates to roughly 2 oz.
per gallon of water. Another reason to
adhere to the label recommendations is
that injurious and unpredictable results
can occur to neighboring plants if mixing
recommendations are not followed.
Herbicides, when used correctly and
responsibly, are wonderful tools. Youll
get your desired results, the residue will
generally dissipate in a short time, and
you can proceed to create the landscape
of your dreams.

initiative was tabled for six months.

Glassware,

first telegraph lines were strung
across America. They were non-threaded,
and had wings or rams horns that would use them for target practice. Its a
some collectors today call Mickey
Mouse ears. Another type from that era
was the glass block design. They were
square-ish.
Soon after that
the pinhole or
pin style was

Millions of glass insulators were
produced each year, in varying shapes,
between 1920 and 1940 to keep up

our country. One of the most prolific
manufactures of insulators was the
Hemingray Glass Co. They produced

available online and I was amazed at how
many different types of insulators there
were, many I had never seen.
Aqua glass insulators were the first
things that I collected back in rural South
Dakota in the early 1970s. They were
plentiful, and so common that we would
make candlesticks out of them and throw
them away when they were completely
covered in wax. We would find tops of
old telegraph and telephone poles on our
hikes through the Black Hills, and we
good thing I held on to a few of them!
Many collectors find the clear and
aqua skirted insulators generic and less
desirable.
Rare is amber,
cobalt blue,
olive green,
and royal
purple. Not
only are
some colors
rare, but
certain styles
of insulator
are almost
impossible
to find, in
any color. You will have to consult the
Hemingray identifications pages to
identify yours, and learn the names
of the designs, such as Pony, Keg,
Rumple, Three Rumple, Seilers, Bullet,
Big Mouth, Hockey Puck, Teepee,
Hoopskirt, to name a few.
There is always something more to
learn about something we may think of
as a common item.
Be aware that insulators have been
reproduced by using molds of originals.
Be sure to check style numbers, glass
thickness and quality, and color. Also
check the crown shape and the bottom
drip points; if the points are smooth, it
could be a reproduction.
Salesman samples were made in the
1920s-1930s, and were made in three
colors: Aqua, Green, and Amber. They
had sharp dip points. These are being
reproduced as well in colors not used
by Hemingray.

Sensational Seniors

Mary Ann Byrne: World Traveler,
Book Lover and Conversationalist
W
hen I entered Mary Ann Byrnes stately historic Jacksonville home on
California Street to begin my Sensational Seniors interview, I was
greeted with, I have always lived in and loved older homes and, while
they take a good deal of tender care and are expensive to maintain, they help define
who I am. Mary Anns home is appropriately decorated in period furniture and a
wonderful assortment of art representing her numerous travels around the world.
She said, I have a large collection of books and for lack of a better word, stuff. I have
enjoyed all of these possessions, but now it is time to start sharing them with other
people, so I am in the process of giving things away, and that is a joy in itself.
To get to 1993 when Mary Ann moved to Jacksonville, one needs to go back in time
and, specifically, to February 15, 1933 and her birth in Des Moines, Iowa where she
joined two older sisters and an older brother. While, like many, her family struggled
financially through these turbulent Depression years, she has many fond memories of
growing up, saying, Our family was fortunate to have a wonderful piano and loads
of books and it was an easy walk to the library.
Mary Anns first twelve years of schooling were in Des Moines, graduating from
high school in 1951. A strong academic student, Mary Ann was intuitive enough to
take a wide selection of available business courses, so she was a proficient typist,
mastered shorthand and had basic accounting skills. While intent on going to college,
she did not have the money to do so, but emulated her older brother by working for
two years to save up money for college. With her strong business skills background,
Mary Ann was able to land a job as an editorial assistant for a national retail magazine.
When two of her supervisors quickly left their positions, then eighteen-year-old Mary
Ann was quickly promoted to an assistant editor position and was sent on assignment
to Indiana. She recalled, I had never been on a train before, but I quickly learned the
ins and outs of train travel, so I could grab my portable typewriter in one hand and
my little suitcase in another and be on my way. Her travels took her to many places,
and in one ten-week travel span she made it to the west coast and experienced her first
ride in an airplane. She would visit all the beautiful department stores, take photos
and then retire to her room and type up a story for the magazine.
While the magazine work was exciting and the travel with the magazine was to
whet her travel appetite, she knew that, if she did not quit the magazine, she would
never make it to college. Fortuitously, she was recruited by two representatives of
the William Jewell College in Liberty, Missouri who were looking for someone with
editorial experience who wanted to attend college and was willing to work 20 hours
a week editing a college publication. It was a perfect match and this small liberal arts
college was just what she wanted. She was to receive a dual degree in English and
American History. In addition, it was here that she met her future husband, Richard
Byrne. Interestingly enough, Richard, while a gifted high school student, like Mary
Ann, had no money for college but was recruited by the same two men who had
recruited Mary Ann, because they wanted Richard for the school debate team. At
the time he was approached, he was digging a septic tank at his parents home. The
two met in a college English class, were engaged at the end of college at which time
Richard then enlisted in the Army and was off to Germany to do intelligence work.

Upon graduation from William Jewell, Mary Ann returned to Des Moines and took
a position as a placement director for Manpower Corporation, a company that tested
and placed people in companies that needed temporary help. When Richard returned
from his military stint, the couple married in 1958. The academic-minded Richard
moved on to the University of Iowa where he was to receive first a Masters and then
a doctorate in Communications. Mary Ann took courses in Middle and Old English
and was an associate editor for a University of Wisconsin publication. Richards first
job was at the University of Wisconsin in Madison and here Mary Ann was to fulfill
a long-time goal by getting a Masters in Library Science. While she did not take a
librarian position in Madison, she and a friend did open a childrens bookstore.
Once the young couple was established in Madison, they started considering adopting a
child and in 1965 adopted twin girls, Megan and Heather, not knowing at the time that both
girls were severely handicapped. It wasnt until the girls were five and the Byrnes were at the
University of Texas in Austin, that an accurate diagnosis of their condition was confirmed. As
one might expect, this was a devastating blow to these determined parents, but Mary Ann
believes that the girls were a gift from God to teach them patience and humility.
Mary Ann, Richard and their girls stayed in Texas until 1973 when Richard was
offered a full tenured professorship and assistant dean position at the renowned
Annenberg School of Communications at the University of Southern California
(USC). Later, Dr. Byrne was to become the Dean of this school. Mary Ann remembers,
Richard always had a little business on the side and was intrigued by the
beginning of the technology movement and pioneered that intrigue and research into
Springboard, a one-man business where he began traveling across the United States
and later Europe speaking to multiple national and international companies about the
coming world of technology and what it was going to mean to the business world.
Mary Ann became his booking agent, and in a short time Springboard and the Byrne
Group became a very successful company.
The Byrne family was devastated in 1988 when Richard was diagnosed with interior
melanoma and, three weeks after giving a speech in Atlanta to AT&T executives, he
died at the young age of 53. Prior to Richards death, Mary Ann and Richard had
made the painful decision to place Heather and Megan in a care facility. Mary Ann
remembers, The girls only knew me and I was smothering them. They needed 24-
hour care and the opportunity to progress as far as they could. The wonderful facility
we placed them in gave them just that.
Now alone, Mary Ann stayed in the Los Angeles area for a few more years before
making the move to Jacksonville in 1993. Prior to 1993, as a travel coordinator for the
Pacific Asia Museum, she had accompanied groups of college students who traveled
to Ashland to see all the Shakespeare Festival plays. At age 60 she decided that she
needed to move from southern California and start a new life in southern Oregon.
Initially, she planned on settling in Ashland but a recommended visit to Jacksonville
convinced her that this was the place for her. She saw the house on East California
Street, secured a showing and purchased three months later.
Once settled in Jacksonville, Mary Ann promised herself that she would not become
president of any organization as she had already served many presidencies. This, however,
did not mean she was inactive, for she quickly became a member of the Jacksonville Garden
Club, the Boosters Club and the Rogue Valley Genealogy Society. While not as president, she
has served on numerous boards including the Rogue Valley Chorale, Rogue Art Gallery, the
Community Concert Association, the Cultural Commission and the Jacksonville Boosters
Foundation. She is an active member of the Jacksonville Presbyterian Church, serving as an
Elder and for 12 years as Clerk of Session. She has been the Moderator of the Jacksonville
Book Club since 1995 which once had 15 members that met monthly in her small retreat
cottage by her main home. She relates, Sadly we have lost Liz Braislin and others during the
ensuing years but have gained Carolyn Kingsnorth and are now a strong eight members.
Her daughter, Heather, died last year, but Mary Ann continues her routine of
calling Megan every Saturday for a half-hour visit and, although Megan can not
talk, she enjoys listening to her mother. Megan and Heather loved Jacksonville and
visited several times a year.
Mary Ann and Richard were able to experience a good deal of travel while Richard
was still alive, mainly to Asia and Europe, and Mary Ann has continued to enjoy
traveling across the world to such places as Argentina, Morocco, Tibet, Italy, England,
Wales, Africa and to India twice. Even with her volunteer responsibilities, her book
club activities and her other commitments, Mary Ann has since childhood been a great
fan of baseball. She played competitive softball during her high school years and has
the broken nose and gimpy elbow to prove it.
A well-known personality in our village, Mary Ann is noted for her NPR-quality
speaking ability, for her intelligent wit, for her generosity of both her resources and
her time and, most importantly, for her grace.

W
hat I have found about meeting with other
caregivers is how much we truly learn from
each others experiences. In a group, we
have finally found a place where we can all relate, on
topics mundane and complex. I love it when we are in
our group and someone mentions what has happened
to them recently in caregiving (a moment of gratitude,
a petty annoyance), and we all react the same way with
a resounding YES, that has happened to me, too. This
is where we find our comfort; that although we may
have different caregiving situations, we can take comfort
in knowing that what we are going through, or what
we are feeling, is familiar, real, and not uncommon. A
shared human experience.
One group member brings-up the term Sundowning
or Sundowners Syndrome. What is this? This
want our help, they just want an environment where
they have an opportunity to talk and have a peaceful,
willing, understanding ear to listen to them, just listen.
Though we may all relate, effective listening means
taking the time to hear and understand without voicing
our own interpretations. The way you listen changes
the way that someone else feels heard. Pause a moment
before chipping in.
Most of us could stand to listen more carefully in
general, to be present and allow others to speak, as this
helps to ease the daily burdens (in the caregivers case,
of being tired, frustrated, emotionally worn-out). The
quality of our listening, our compassionate ear is all that
is wanted and needed. Help, when sought, comes after.

Mosquitoes are Attracted
to Stress!
M
osquitoes really do prefer
some people to others, says
Dr. Jonathan Day, a medical
entomologist and mosquito expert at
the University of Florida. Some of it is
genetic, like your blood
type. Their preferred
blood type is O. Other
genetic factors play a part,
like your metabolic rate,
which dictates the amount
of carbon dioxide (CO2)
your body releases as it
burns energy. Pregnant
women and overweight or
obese people tend to have higher resting
metabolic rates, which may make them
more attractive to mosquitoes, Dr.
Day explains. After eating a big meal,
running or weight lifting, for example,
your metabolic rate will go up, as will
your levels of CO2. This makes you the
preferred target of mosquitoes. Another
factor that is not genetic that can make
you more attractive to these winged
biters is the consumption of alcohol,
especially if you do anything aerobic
around the same time. So cocktails
and dancing should be done indoors,
especially at dawn or dusk, which is the
most active time for these critters.
There are other cues that mosquitoes
use to find their favorite hosts that you
can do something about. The biggest one
that has recently been studied is stress
management. Researchers from the Martin
Lab at the University of South Florida
are investigating how hormones in the
blood may influence mosquito-feeding
preferences in birds. Stephanie Gervasi, a
postdoctoral researcher from the group,
did a study to see how steroid hormones
that are released from the adrenals and
circulated throughout the body during
times of stress impact the mosquitoes
feeding patterns. The study showed that
mosquitoes prefer stressed blood. The
study also showed that mosquitoes that
fed on stressed birds laid more eggs,
and those stressed blood eggs hatched
more quickly than those feeding on
healthy, unstressed populations of birds.
Managing your stress could help you be
less susceptible to bites and help keep the
mosquito population down, too. Think
about that the next time you are too busy
for your self-care routine. This research
gives my quote, When you make time for
inner peace, you are contributing to world
peace, a whole new meaning!

This spring, volunteers spent much time
weeding, repairing drip irrigation, and
moving bark mulch at the Arboretum. The
mulch is being used for moisture retention
and weed control during the hottest
summer months. Long term plans for the
grounds include removal of all invasive
species of grasses and weeds through
burning and replanting with a low-lying
native grasses.
All are welcome to get involved with
the Friends of the Arboretum, and
volunteers are always needed. There
are regular work parties during the
year or you are free to contribute time
on your own.

Cool Summer Forest Park Trails
I
n a recent article, the Mail Tribune
referred to the Pacific Crest Trail as
a well-kept secret. A surprising
phrase, because for 40 years Oregons
official highway map has delineated
this popular trail with a dotted red line
stretching from Donomore Meadows
near Dutchman Peak, across the Siskiyou
Crest and up the Cascade Range to
Cascade Locks on the Columbia River.
Apparently, the experiences of the
generations of hikers, backpackers, and
runners whod enjoyed this National
Scenic Trail didnt register in our cultural
conscience until a best-selling book (and
subsequent movie) was produced.
It gets one thinking about what makes
a trail popular in the first place. Proximity
to population centers must be considered.
Portlands Forest Park trails, though often
muddy and with limited panoramic views,
are a must-do for hikers and runners
visiting the Home of the Trailblazers. One
would be surprised to head out on a 6 mile
jaunt and not meet a few hundred people.
The Table Rocks and some Crater Lake
trails are popular as well. Though not
located near urban centers, these day-
trip hikes have interpretive programs to
raise public awareness of the flora and
fauna of these special places. It would be
an unusual day to not see 20-30 vehicles
parked at these trailheads.
So, which trails in Jacksonvilles
Woodlands and Forest Park are the best
used trails? Proximity to town makes
Beekman Woods and Britt Woods trails
easily accessible, and any of our recent
pleasant days have seen heavy usage.
Overall, my experience in these warmer
months has been that Sarah Zigler Trail
along Jackson Creek is a favorite hike,
especially early in the day when the birds
and mammals are most active.

of the Jack-Ash Trail Completed

is very pleased to announce that
construction of nearly 5 miles of new trail
has been completed!
After 3 months of
effort, a group of
dedicated workers
including a local trail
crew, Medford BLM
staff, Rogue Work
Source youth crew,
Northwest Youth
Corp crews, and
SUTA volunteers
finished construction
of nearly 5 miles of
new trail on Anderson
Butte, about 8 miles
southwest of Jacksonville. The work
entailed cutting new trail in some steep
and rocky terrain, thrashing through thick
stands of buckbrush, manzanita, Oregon
grape, grubbing-out countless stumps,
constructing 9 switchbacks, and moving
thousands of cubic yards of soil and rock.
The result is a 15-mile trail that leads from
Griffin Lane to the northern end of the
Grub Gulch access trail for the Sterling
Mine Ditch Trail(SMDT) all the way up
to the top and across the western slope of
Anderson Butte, where it intersects with
Anderson Butte Road. Existing roads
allow a connection via Rush Creek Road
down to the Little Applegate trailhead
for the SMDT. The work was funded by
Title II Grants, a grant from REI, and
community donations.

full of wildflowers, striking rockscapes,

and loved looking at the meadows across the valley. But I
no longer imagined myself or my dogs running through
grassy fields. I still liked the idea of running through
tall grasses, but I did not want to deal with the dreaded
foxtails that could potentially cause me and my dogs
significant grief. I love the meadows, but hate the foxtails.
In Southern Utah, I had dealt with dogs getting
foxtails in their ears, in their feet, and in various other
places a few times a year. So, when I started working
here in Jacksonville and was warned to get ready for
foxtail season, I did not think much of it. I figured
whats a few foxtails that I have to pull out. I greatly
underappreciated what a problem foxtails are in the
valley. From late May through August (and even
beyond) foxtails are always a concern for almost any
problem an animal comes in for.
Itchy ears likely a foxtail in the ear. In fact, in June,
it is a foxtail until proven otherwise.
Coughing could be a foxtail in the throat.

Foxtails can easily penetrate the skin or be
swallowed. Once they gain access they can migrate
deeper into body tissues and can cause significant
problems, most commonly abscesses. It is possible,
though very rare, for them to even migrate into the
lungs, abdominal cavity, and even the brain (again,
this is very rare and not very likely). It is for this
reason though that once a foxtail is suspected, it is
best to bring your pet in for us to look at so we can
remove the foxtail, (if present) before it causes more
serious problems.
This time of year, the best course of action in
regards to foxtails is to avoid them. I know, this is
much easier said than done. Yet, there are some easy
things to do. As attractive as grassy fields are, do
not let your pet run through dry grassy fields. If you
take them hiking and they stray onto a grassy field,
inspect their paws, ears, skin, and mouth for foxtails
right when the hike is done. If you see them, remove
them. If your dog or cat shows one of the above signs
of foxtails, bring them in for us to look at. If you have
foxtails on your property, cut them down before they
get dry and try to not let your pet run on the foxtail
part of your property. If this is not possible, again,
inspect your animal every time they come in before
the foxtails can get imbedded. For long-haired cats
and dogs, and scruffy dogs, getting them shaved for
the summer can also be helpful. At the very least,
shaving their feet can prevent a lot of foxtail trouble.
As a veterinarian, everywhere I have worked, it
is busier in the summer than other times of year.
Friends have often asked me why this is. There
are many answers to this question. Here, the main
answer is Foxtails!

 News from ATA: The East ART Nears Completion;
the Remaining ART Work Begins

Now that the 5.6-mile eastern end of
the Applegate Ridge Trail, the East ART,
is close to being officially open (check it
outwow!), ATA is eager to begin the
process again
for the Center
ART and the
West ART so
that eventually
you'll be able
to walk all the
way to Grants
Pass on the
Applegate
Ridge Trail.
Excitement
is growing.
Legions of
people have expressed support. Audiences
at showings of our video; volunteers
who helped build the trail; people who
have already experienced the East ART;
those who have joined ATA hikes; the
many generous people who have donated
money to ATA; Facebook users who "like"
us; lovers of the beauty of the Siskiyou
Mountainsfrom these and many others,
enthusiasm waxes high.
The BLM, however, has shown less
enthusiasm. They have proposed logging
projects along some of the projected trail,
including in the 7,527-acre Wellington
Wildlands, and have shown favoritism to
OHV trails over hiking trails. So ATA has
set out to prove to BLM how popular the
idea of the Applegate Ridge Trail is.
We want to point out to them that
the ART is as important as it is exciting,
considering that non-motorized recreation
(walking, hiking, bicycling, mushroom
hunting, birding, swimming, hunting,
and many others) is the most popular
form of recreation on public lands. The
ART fits right into the vision of the
future predicted by the Oregon State
Parks Department, who gave highest
priority to non-motorized trail systems
connecting communities, such as the ART,
which will connect Grants Pass, Murphy,
Applegate, Ruch, and Jacksonville (and,
by connecting to the proposed Jack-Ash
Trail, all the communities from there to
Ashland, too). These communities are
connected in their common use of the
trail and in the opportunity for residents
and visitors to walk and hike the trail, to
see the beauties of our mountains and
valleys from the ridge, to experience the
wildflowers and varied tree species, and
maybe, if they're lucky, to see a coyote or a
bear, a fisher or an eagle.

Last month, I stopped by South Stage
Cellars on South 3rd Street in downtown,
having heard that Porscha Schiller, SSC's
manager, was hosting a 100th birthday
party for her mother.
Porscha had invited some of the
area's most accomplished musicians to
help celebrate. As I walked in, the very
talented Jeff Kloetzel, a regular, was
accompanying Shae Celine on vocals. Ms.
Celine, who sings locally with the Rogue
Suspects, studied at the San Francisco
Conservatory of Music, focusing on opera
and Broadway musicals, and it shows.
She delivers a song and is the kind
of singer who stops the room when she
starts. Shae is young, gifted, and recently
signed an exclusive recording contract
with Tarpan Records and legendary
multi-Grammy-winning producer
Narada Michael Walden. So, get on the
web, find out when she's playing next in
Jacksonville, and enjoy a performance
before she's off to Hollywood.
Also at South Stage Cellars last month
was Nick Garrett-Powell in a solo
performance. Normally performing with
the Fret Drifters, Nick is the featured singer
on Love Your Lover, a remarkable video
available on the Fret Drifters home site.
His solo music is also something to behold.
Nick is nothing less than an extraordinarily
original singer and guitarist who can also
play almost any instrument. He is a master
of improvisation, using high tech loops
and effects that allow him, when he wants,
to sound like a live jazz trumpeter, a very
good jazz trumpeter. His music can send
you into another dimension.
