Lesson Topic: Three Levels of Government

CURRICULUM EXPECTATIONS:

- B1. Assess responses of government in Canada to some significant issues, and


develop plans of action for government and citizens to address social and
environmental issues (p. 112).
- B2. Use the social inquiry process to investigate Canadian social and/or
environmental issues (p. 112).
- B3. Demonstrate and understanding of the roles and responsibility of citizens and
the different types of levels in Canada (p. 112).

SPECIFIC EXPECTATIONS:

- Assess the effectiveness of actions taken by one more levels of government to


address an issue of national, provincial/territorial, and/or local significance
- Formulate questions to guide investigations into social and/or environmental
issues in Canada from various perspectives, including the perspective of the level
(or levels) of government responsible for addressing the issue.
- Describes responsibility of government for providing some services and dealing
with issues associated with the three levels of government

By the end of the lesson students should/will be able to:

PREVIOUS ASSESSMENT:

This is an introductory unit. Students have not had previous assessment on the unit of
government. Students however, have knowledge on the topic of government and local
government through previous lessons.

LESSON ACTIVITIES:

Introduction Activity:

This lesson will be done mainly from individual seat work. Students will copy a chart and
have a discussion about different levels of government.

Development Strategies/Activities:
1. Students will discuss what they have learnt so far about government and new
terms that were introduced from the previous lesson
2. Students will be given a handout on the three different levels of government and
will make anchor charts associated with each level.
- Why is it important to have municipal government?

ACCOMMODATIONS/MODIFICATIONS:

Currently, there are two students on an IEP. Specific questions will be developed to
modify their different learning levels.
- Both students have a hard copy of the definitions that are on the handout and will
have to fill in the banks in order to follow along
- Student one will use an ipad
- Student number two will have their own note.

CULMINATING ACTIVITY:/ASSESSMENT OF LEARNING

Students will be assessment though a test on Monday, December 15 th, 2014.
