Instructional Strategies and Learning Tasks that Support Student Needs

Time Action Rationale

5- 7mins Launch/ Motivation:

Students will be given the following problem in their notebooks.

John has a certain amount of money. He went to the store and brought
a shirt for $14.50 and has $35.50 remaining. How much money did he
bring to the store?

10 mins Instructional Procedure (Explore)

Yesterday we looked at solving one- step equations. This skill will be

useful in solving two- step equations.

Before we move on, who can remind us what are equations?

Expected Response: A mathematical sentence with an equal sign

Lets look at example 1:

Example 1:

2x + 8 = 12

Teacher will model the first step in solving two- step equations.

2x + 8 = 12
-8 -8

edTPA 12/15/16 p. 1
2x = 4

Now we have a one- step equation. Who can remind us how to solve
for x?

Expected Response: We divide both sides by 2.

Students will be 30 seconds to copy. After which they will be given 1

minute to try example 2. (remember to

Example 2: 4x -7 = 13

Teacher will circulate to check for understanding while students

complete example 2.

30 Structured Practice and Application

Partner Practice:

Students will be given 10 minutes to complete questions 1-4 on their

worksheet with an elbow partner.

Independent Practice:

Students will be asked to complete the remaining questions on the

worksheet given. They will have 15 minutes to do this silently and
independently.

Teacher will circulate to check for understanding while students

complete partner practice and independent practice.

5-8 mins Closure:

Students will be given an exit ticket to complete.
