A byproduct from burning pulverized coal in electric

power generating plants. During combustion, mineral
impurities in the coal that fuse in suspension & float out
of the combustion chamber with exhaust gases. As fused
material increases, it solidifies & cools into spherical
glassy particles that are called as fly ash is collected
from exhaust gases by electrostatic precipitators or bag
filters. The fine powder resembles Portland cement, but
in actual it is chemically different. Fly ash reacts with
the byproduct calcium hydroxide that is released by
chemical reaction between cement & water in order to
form extra cementitious properties to varying the
degrees depending upon the chemical & physical
properties. When it is compared to cement & water, the
chemical reaction between calcium hydroxide & fly ash
is typically slower & resulting in delayed hardening of
concrete.

There are two types of fly ash that are commonly used
in concrete i.e. Class C & Class F fly ash.

Class C: is often high calcium fly ashes with carbon

content that is less than 2%.

Class F: is generally low calcium fly ashes with carbon

content less than 5% & it sometimes can be highest as
10%.

Generally, class c fly ash is produced from burning

sub-bituminous coals. The performance properties
between Class C & Class F fly ashes very & it depends
upon chemical & physical properties of ash. Class F fly
ash reacts only with the byproducts formed when
cement reacts with water. All type of fly ash is supplied
by fly ash suppliers in Philippines.

It can be used as a prime material in

bricks. One of the most important
applications is PCC pavement as it uses a
large amount of concrete. Fly ash provides
significant amount of economic benefits. It
has also been used for paving roads.

It can be a cost-effective substitute for Portland

cement in some marketplaces. Fly ash could be
recognized as a byproduct & has embodied
energy. It is also available in two different
colors. The coloring agents can be added at the
job site. Also, fly ash requires less water as
compared to Portland cement. Fly ash is easier
to use in a cold weather. Here are some other
benefits:
Water resistance
It can be used as admixtures.
Greatest Workability
It produces denser concrete.
It reduces heat of hydration.
It reduces CO2 emission.

Currently, more than 50% concrete placed

in the United States as it contains fly ash.
It usually varies, depending upon the type
of fly ash & its activity level. In typical
manner, Class F fly ash is used as at
dosage of 15-20% by mass of cementitious
material, and Class C fly ash at 15-40%. To
