U.S. DEPARTMENT OF AGRICULTURE
NATURAL RESOURCES CONSERVATION SERVICE
When using chisel tillage, tilling odd areas is generally not a problem and the procedure outlined above may not be
the most efficient for the tillage operation. The soil conservationist will help plan the most efficient procedure for your
farm.
4. Plant the field parallel to the terraces. If the terrace system has been designed as a plant over system, plant the field
generally with the terrace.
5. Inlets on terrace systems having underground outlets should be marked to avoid damage by farm machinery. This
may be done by flagging, painting, establishing sod around the inlets, or using reflective tape. Rows should be
planted out around inlets to avoid damage by cultivating and harvesting machinery.
6. Terrace ridges, especially those with steep backslopes, are potentially hazardous. All farming and maintenance
operations should be executed with caution and common sense to reduce the chance of damage to the machine and
injury to the operator.
Revised 10/2003
U.S. DEPARTMENT OF AGRICULTURE
NATURAL RESOURCES CONSERVATION SERVICE
Check terraces and outlets after heavy rains for possible damage. Where inlets to underground outlets have been used,
remove any debris that has accumulated around inlet that might impair its function. Water that is ponded in a storage area
longer than planned may indicate a plugged orifice plate. Unplug orifice by inserting a long rod to clear debris or by
removing the orifice plate. If the orifice plate is removed, be sure to replace it after the water has drained from the storage
area. Excessive settlement around riser or pipeing under ridge must be repaired as soon as possible.
Maintenance involving earthmoving may be accomplished by plowing up the terrace ridges to restore proper ridge height or
using construction equipment such as scrapers and road patrols to remove accumulated sediment and rebuild the ridges.
All newly constructed or recently maintained terrace cut slopes and fills that are to be farmed must be no steeper than that
on which farm equipment can operate safely.
A critical area to maintain on narrow base and grass backslope terraces is the grassed slopes. A good sod should be
established and maintained. Trees, brush, and weeds should be controlled by cutting, mowing, or spraying. The slopes
should be fertilized occasionally to maintain a vigorous sod. Burrowing rodents should be eliminated from the slopes.
NOTES:
1. Prepare a firm seedbed. After the practice has been constructed to the design requirements, spread lime and fertilizer
uniformly. Incorporate it into the soil to a depth of 3 - 4 inches with suitable equipment.
2. Seed grasses. Place seed 1/4 to 1/2 inch deep in a firm, even seedbed with a corrugated, roller-type seeder. A grain drill
or broadcast seeder may be used if followed by a corrugated roller or harrow to cover seed. A companion crop may be
seeded at the same time and covered in the same manner.
3. Use a temporary vegetative cover when construction is completed in early summer, to stabilize the practice until a
permanent grass mixture can be seeded. Remove the stabilizing crop prior to seeding permanent grass.
4. If mulch is required, it shall be applied uniformly and anchored. Hay or straw may be anchored by mechanical tacking, a
spray coating of emulsified asphalt, or with paper netting. Commercial mulch products will be anchored as specified by
the manufacturer.

U.S. DEPARTMENT OF AGRICULTURE
NATURAL RESOURCES CONSERVATION SERVICE
1. Scope: The work shall consist of site preparation, excavating, filling, and shaping as necessary for
construction of the terraces as shown on the drawings and specified herein.
2. Site Preparation: Undesirable material such as fences, fence rows, trees, brush and sod shall be removed
from the areas occupied by the terrace ridge, terrace channel, borrow areas, and all other areas which might
interfere with the operation and maintenance of the system.
All dead furrows, gullies, ditches, and existing terraces which will interfere with the construction, operation and
maintenance of the system shall be filled and/or leveled prior to or during construction.
3. Earth Fill - Terrace Ridge: Earth fill material shall be free from frozen particles, roots, sod, brush, and other
objectionable materials that might endanger the performance of the terrace. The fill material shall have no rock
particles larger than 3 inches in diameter.
The ridge portion of the terrace shall be compacted by routing the hauling and spreading equipment over the
fill material in such a manner that the entire surface of the completed ridge will be traversed by not less than
one tread/track of equipment.
The moisture content of the earth fill material shall be sufficient to permit satisfactory compaction. The
moisture content can generally be considered as satisfactory if the fill material can be molded into a round
ball between the hands without readily separating or squeezing out free water.
All ridges shall be constructed to the planned alignment, grade and cross-section shown on the plans, with
the specified overfill for settlement and the channel graded to drain reasonably well. Any ditch or depression
at the bottom of the back slope shall be filled and smoothed so that drainage will be away from the terrace.
Broadbase: Unless otherwise specified, fill material shall come from the terrace channel.
Grassed Back and Narrow Base: Unless otherwise specified, fill material shall come from the
downhill side of the terrace ridge, except for cuts that are required to construct the channel to the
specified grade and cross-section.
Provisions must be made to prevent piping if underground conduits are located under terrace ridges.
Mechanical compaction, water packing, trench sidewall sloping, and installation and backfill of conduit
trenches early enough to allow adequate settlement are methods that can be used.
4. Outlets: Where terraces outlet into established grassed waterways or vegetated areas, care shall be taken
during construction to minimize disturbance of existing vegetation.
The transition from the terrace channel to the center of the waterway shall be free of abrupt changes in grade.
Revised 12/2003
U.S. DEPARTMENT OF AGRICULTURE
NATURAL RESOURCES CONSERVATION SERVICE
1. Scope: The work shall consist of furnishing and installing conduits and inlets for underground outlets as
shown on the drawings and specified herein.
2. Inspection and Handling of Materials: Conduit and inlet materials shall be carefully inspected before
installation. Where applicable, clay and concrete tile shall be checked for damage from freezing and thawing
prior to installation. Bituminized fiber and plastic pipe and tubing shall be protected from hazards causing
deformation or warping. Materials with physical imperfections shall not be installed.
3. Placement: All underground outlets shall be laid to line and grade and covered with approved blinding,
envelope, or filter material to a depth of not less than 3 inches over the top of the drain. No reversals in grade
of the conduit shall be permitted. Material used for blinding shall contain no rocks greater than 1 inches
in diameter.
All conduits shall be installed in accordance with ASTM F449 "Standard Recommended Practice for
Subsurface Installation of Corrugated Thermoplastic Tubing for Agricultural Drainage or Water Table Control."
Rigid conduits such as clay or concrete tile will not need the 90 V groove, but all other applicable placement
and bedding requirements will be adhered to. Joints between drain tiles shall have the closest possible fit.
4. Backfill: Earth backfill material shall be placed in the trench in such a manner that displacement of the
conduit will not occur and so that the filter and bedding material, after backfilling, will meet the requirements
of the drawings and specifications. Backfill within 2 feet of conduit shall have no rock particles larger than
2 inches in diameter.
When conduits are installed two or more seasons prior to construction of terrace or diversion ridges,
backfilling operations should be at an angle to the trench so that loose backfill material flows down the
advancing frontslope. In all other cases the conduit under the ridge area shall receive special backfilling
as shown below:
1 1
3 3
CONDUIT TRENCH
Tile or conduit
18 inches
Backfill shall have adequate moisture for compaction. Backfill within 6 inches of conduit shall be hand
compacted. Subsequent layers of backfill shall be placed in 6 inch lifts and mechanically compacted.
The moisture content can generally be considered as satisfactory if the fill material can be molded into a
round ball between the hands without readily separating or squeezing out free water.

GENERAL INSTRUCTIONS FOR USING THIS TERRACE DESIGN PROGRAM:
1. Job identification and location information entered at the top of the design sheet is automatically
entered in other parts of the program. Grey-shaded cells are locations for user entry.
2. As you move the mouse across the design sheet, comment windows with information on the
details of the program appear.
3. Surveyed stations are entered in column A of the table. Enter the stations as numbers
for example, if you type in 1200, the computer will format it automatically as 12+00. Don't type in
the "plus" sign, because the computer won't recognize it as a number that way.
4. You can enter survey data in grade rod or in elevation. If you choose the grade rod option,
enter an instrument height as well, so that elevations can be calculated.
5. Entry of offsets is optional. If no offset is available at a particular station, the program uses the
estimated ground slope to determine storage. If you do enter any offsets, make sure to also
enter an offset spacing.
6. Enter amount of cut or fill in the channel (if any) in the "Channel Cut" column. If it's a fill,
enter the amount as a negative number, either with a minus sign or in parentheses( ).
7. The drainage area (watershed) of the basin can be specified either in acres directly (useful for
the top basin in a series), or by entering length and spacing of terrace ridges.
8. The hot link "Terrace Type" located on the design sheet takes you to the Terrace Types
worksheet, allowing selection of typical terrace ridge cross-section. You can select from
broad base, grass back, or narrow base, and specify backslope dimensions.
If none of these cross-sections represents what you're designing, you can use the
"draw your own" option at the bottom. Specifying a terrace type enables the program to:
- select a representative cross-section diagram to put on the cut sheet
- calculate cut and fill volumes
- estimate seeding acres
9. The front slope length of the terrace ridge is specified on the design sheet, right next to the
"Terrace Type" hot link, because the front slope length is used in the basin storage calculations.
10. Cell H25 is the entry for Trial Ridge Rod (or Trial Ridge Elevation if you're working with elevation
data). After you've entered all of the survey data and watershed/runoff information, and selected
a ridge frontslope length, you're ready to determine how high the terrace ridge must be to store
the design storm. To do this, use a trial-and-error method to select a ridge elevation that
produces at least 100% of the target storage required (reported just below your trial entry).
11. Once you've determined a trial ridge rod or elevation that meets the storage requirement,
click on the CALCULATE button. This will automatically fill in the "Constructed Ridge"
column so you can determine what the computer is planning for the final ridge configuration.
You can override the automatic ridge calculations by entering your own rod or elevation
numbers at any of the stations in the Constructed Ridge column. For example, this
can be used to zero out or blend the ridge to natural ground outside the storage area.
12. Stations need to be entered in numerical order in column A, in consecutive rows. If you
need to add or remove stations, use the following procedure to avoid changing cell
formats (without having to retype all of the data):
To add stations:
- Use the instructions on moving data (below) to select all data below where you want
to add stations, and move it down the required number of rows.
- Then use the instructions on deleting data (below) to clear out the rows where you'll
be entering new stations.
- Finally, add your new stations and accompanying data.
To remove stations:
- Use the instructions on deleting data (below) to clear out the rows of the stations
to be removed
- Use the instructions on moving data (below) if necessary, to make sure all of the
stations you're keeping are in consecutive rows.
13. A cut/fill ratio estimate is reported to aid in determining if you'll have enough material
to build the terrace ridge.
14. Select orificing or pressure flow tile outlet scheme. Toggling the dropdown menu
will automatically fill in the value for orifice depth from the Defaults page, if available,
and if you've selected the orificing option. You'll notice that the input requests
change based on tile outlet scheme, as well.
15. The computer will size a minimum outlet tile and/or orifice based on the terrace basin
design from above and taking into account any additional flow from basins above,
using the same tile line (in the "+Q" entry cell). You can enter a larger size orifice
or tile size if desired.
16. The table of standard tile sizes for a range of tile grades is reported, along with the
predicted flow velocity in the tile. You will need to select a tile size (or series of sizes)
based on the planned grade of the tile outlet (ie, flatter slopes require larger tile).
17. A minimum riser diameter is computed for the terrace basin you've designed; you
can enter a larger size if desired. You can also click on the hot links to see
example pictures of Type I and Type II risers or to refer to the discharge capacities
chart that the software uses as a reference to do its calculations.
18. The computer estimates a total seeding acreage for the terrace ridge, depending on
the type of ridge selected and the total length of the design. You can enter your own
estimate for acres. The result is reported on Job Sheet 600-1 (2). The exact
seed mix is specified by clicking on the "Seeding" button at the top of the Design sheet.
19. The "Plot" button at the top of the design sheet sets automatic plot scales based on
the stations and elevations in the subject design. However, the plot sheet itself is
unlocked so that you can modify the scales if desired. You can also use Excel's
drawing tools to add any descriptive text or details to the plot as desired.
20. The "Draw Plan" button navigates you to the Location Graphics sheet, where you can
create a plan map of the terrace system using Excel's drawing tools. You can also
import pictures such as aerial photos from ArcView or other sources.
21. After printing out and/or saving your terrace basin design, you can go on to designing
another basin in the same system by clicking on the "New Basin" button. This
clears out the survey and design data from the previous basin but retains the
information that is likely to apply to another basin in the same system, such as
landowner and location.
