UNIT/CHAPTER OBJECTIVE/GENERALIZATION/BIG IDEA:

This lesson plan is part of a unit plan on Health and Wellness covering food group classifications.
Where the student will be able to learn the basic building block for good nutritional diets and health.

LESSON OBJECTIVE:
The students will be working together in groups of four and given a computer, the students will be able
to research the different food groups, then create their own daily diet while labeling the food groups with
100% accuracy.

During this lesson, the students are to work in groups so they can communicate and collaborate,
addresses on standard for students.

use these technologies to be able to research the desired material for the lesson. This lesson should be
able to be completed by just using the USDA website.
BACKGROUND and RATIONALE:
The key concepts for this lesson are understanding how to properly research material to find the
information you need. As well as use Microsoft word to create a table. The students will also learn
dietary and food classification concepts.
Academic language will be addressed in methods courses and is not addressed in IDT 3600.
This lesson is a continuation of TN standards 3.0
Knowing your food groups, and what foods are what, you then will have learned the base of the
nutritional world, which everything else will build upon this lesson.
The lesson or technology use will be modified to meet the needs of diverse learners.

PROCEDURES AND TIMELINE:

Introduction: What will you do to help the students become focused or motivated to learn in this
teaching segment? To start the lesson, I could use a short PowerPoint focusing on the importance of
good dieting habits and the causes of bad diets.
Procedures:
o 1). PowerPoint- 5 minutes. Discuss the benefits of a good diet, as well as the consequences of a bad one.
o 2). Group research- 20 minutes. Given 4 students per group and one computer, each student will have no
longer than 5 minutes to research the required material for their diet. Once the time is up the computer will be
rotated to the next student. The other three students who are not at the computer can still help the other
student if they are not able to find information regarding their diet and the food group pyramid, also they can
discuss between themselves their diets and what they should change about it to make it healthier.
o 3). Group activity- 20 minutes. After they have researched foods for their daily diet, they will then take turns
using the computer and use Microsoft word to create a table for their daily diets for the week. They will be
handed a checklist sheet they can use to help them with the groceries.
o 4). Class discussion- 5 minutes. As a class, we will then discuss what the students have learned or havent
learned. Stress the importance of a good diet with them one more time.

Closure: See procedure 4).
