PLANNING AND PREPARATION
2. Displays an awareness of, and an interest in, curriculum at this level. Meets expectations
Comments:
Stephanie has been working during her practicum in a Grade 1 class, under the guidance of Ms. Merina Ripley. Classroom
composition for this group of students incorporated a number of students with challenging learning and behavioural needs.
Stephanie, therefore, has gained experience in differentiation, both for planning and delivery of academic content and for
managing behaviour. Ms. Ripley noted that Stephanie showed strong flexibility, being able to "go with the flow" and make
quick changes as needed. Stephanie has become familiar with curriculum for this level and was able to plan lessons where
she found her own resources and approaches.
CLASSROOM ENVIRONMENT
Comments:
Through the year, Stephanie has shown a steady growth in confidence in managing the behaviour of students. It is a
pleasure watching her interact with the children, as she demonstrates patience and calmness, as well as the fact that she
enjoys being with them. She developed strong rapport with the students in the class. She was able to engage the students
in learning and to keep their focus and interest through the lessons, while dealing with behavioural challenges at the same
time. It was hard work to teach the lesson and maintain the focus of the students but Stephanie was able to do this well.
INSTRUCTION
25. Draws on students' existing knowledge and experience to promote learning Meets expectations
35. Monitors student learning and provides feedback to students Meets expectations
36. Adjusts lessons in response to students' needs, strengths and interests Meets expectations
Comments:
Stephanie has developed a solid bank of instructional strategies and approaches to learning. She has used technology in
an effective way during her lessons. She uses a variety of ways in which to keep the students engaged, including
movement from whole group, to small groups, to individual work.
PROFESSIONAL RESPONSIBILITIES
41. Uses oral and written language appropriate to a professional context Meets expectations
Comments:
Stephanie has demonstrated a high degree of professionalism throughout her practicum. She has certainly contributed to
building the positive environment that exists in this class. As Ms. Ripley noted, Stephanie is able to "see the positives".
Stephanie would plan to contribute more in a future school setting. As she wrote: "Contributing to the school is still a
target to work on, because at this particular school there was no extracurricular (because it is only K-2). Getting involved
and helping out was not easy to do." Stephanie has learned to plan and implement lessons, while conducting herself as a
professional. She has successfully completed her practicum.
