1. There is an analogy between rotational and translational physical quantities.

Identify
the rotational term analogous to each of the following linear quantities: acceleration,
force, mass, work, translational kinetic energy, linear momentum, impulse. (Example:
impulse F Delta-t corresponds to angular impulse, tau Delta-t

Impulse F Delta-t corresponds to angular impulse, tau Delta-t

Quantity Translational Rotational
acceleration a (angular acceleration)
force F=ma = I (I=moment of inertia)
mass m I (moment of inertia)
work Fx (= angular position)
2
kinetic energy mv /2 I2/2 (=angular velocity)
linear momentum mv I

2. An automobile with tires of radius 0.260 m travels 80,000 km before wearing them out.
How many revolutions do the tires make, neglecting any backing up and any change in
the radius due to wear?

The perimeter of the tire = 2*pi*0.26=1.63 (m).

The number of revolutions made =80000*1000/1.63= 49,079,754 (revs)

3.Vinyl record albums revolve 33.33 times per minute. What is this in revolutions per
second? In radians per second?

To get rev/s simply divide 33.33 by 60 seconds=33.33/60=0.56(rev/s)

To get radian per second use the conversion factor as found in:
http://www.export911.com/convert/conFac-R.htm
1Rev=6.28Rad=2*piRad
So: 0.56*6.28=3.51(rad/s)

4. Suppose a phonograph record accelerates from rest to 33.3 rpm in 1.50 s. (a) What is
its angular acceleration in rad/s^2? (b) How many revolutions does it go through in the
process?

a) First change the angular velocity to radian per second (see above 3):
33.3rpm=3.51(rad/s)
The law written for angular movement is similar to translational movement:
=0+t
with 0=0 and =0.089, hence
=3.51/1.5=2.34(rad/s2)
b) During the whole process, the angular distance it travel is
= t2/2=2.34*1.52/2=2.64(radians) or 2.64/6.28=0.42(rev)
5. Helicopter blades withstand tremendous stresses. In addition to supporting the weight
of the helicopter, they are spun at rapid rates and experience large centripetal
accelerations, especially at the tip. (a) Calculate the centripetal acceleration at the tip of
a 4.00 m long helicopter blade that rotates at 300 rpm. (b) Compare the linear speed of
the tip with the speed of sound (taken to be 340 m/s this day.)

a) Use the following reference:

http://www.ac.wwu.edu/~vawter/PhysicsNet/Topics/RotationalKinematics/Centripetal
Force.html

a=2*r
First change into SI unit which is in rad/s:
300rpm=300*6.28/60=31.4(rad/s)
So a=31.42*4=3944(m/s2)

b) Linear speed of the tip is:

V=r=31.4*4=125.6(m/s)
This is about one-third of sound velocity
