WHAT IS GATE EXAM

GATE is stands for Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering, It is


an online exam, whose score is used as a screening criteria for
MTech/MS/PhD admissions in IIT/NIT and other universities in India
and also for applying jobs in PSU(public Sector Units) like BHEL,
PGCIL,IOCL etc.. GATE score for academics is valid for 3 years,
but for job purposes, you need to have a most recent score.
Purpose of GATE Examination

The purpose of the GATE exam is to evaluate the students


knowledge and understanding of their under Graduate level
subjects in Engineering and Science. The GATE score reflects the
relative performance level of a candidate.
Every year lakhs of Engineering graduate students are coming
from universities and engineering colleges. In the present
competitive scenario, to measure and test the caliber of
engineering students is possible through the GATE exam only.
Myth About GATE Examination

There is a misconception among students is that the GATE exam


is only for ME. /M. Tech which finally leads to a teaching career
only. But, it is not correct. The GATE score of the candidate is also
used by several public sector undertakings(PSU) (i.e.,
government-owned companies) for recruiting graduate
engineers in entry-level positions, to get Fellowship Programs
from CSIR and Scholarships in ME/ M.Tech and many more.

Fellowship Programs :
The Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR)
introduced the Junior Research Fellowship (JRF) - GATE scheme
in 2002 to allow GATE-qualified engineering graduates and
GPAT-qualified pharmaceutical graduates to pursue research
through suitable Ph.D. programs at CSIR laboratories.

Stipend and tenure:


The fellowship amount is Rs.25,000 (US$370) per month plus HRA
(House Rent Allowance). In addition, a contingency grant of
Rs.20,000 (US$300) per annum (calculated on a pro-rata basis for
fraction of a year) is also provided. On completion of 2 years as
JRF - GATE, the fellowship upgraded to SRF (Senior Research
Fellowship) - GATE and stipend increased to Rs. 28,000 (US$420)
per month in the later years, on the basis of assessment of CSIR
JRF-NET guidelines.
Recruitment Through GATE
Scholarships in ME/M. Tech :
To enhance/promote the master education in India the
Scholarship/ Assistance ship will be Rs 12,400/- per month and
paid from MHRD to GATE qualified student. It is financial support
for candidates so that they can easily afford their needs during
their course and thesis work.
Integrated Ph.D. :
Some colleges let you do an integrated Masters plus doctoral
programme, directly after your graduation and you can also get
a stipend of Rs.28,000.

Foreign Study :
Some non-Indian universities like the National University of
Singapore, Nan yang Technological University in Singapore and
some technical universities in Germany also recognized GATE
score as a criterion for judging the candidates for admission into
their Masters and Ph.D. programs
DRDO Research:
From this year onwards DRDO is also considering the GATE score
for their jobs.
