POSITION TITLE: DatabaseAnalyst


DEPARTMENT: Information Support Services

PURPOSE: This position supports, manages, and organizes electronic data in the colleges
student management information system (SMIS).

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
Coordinate the use of data and information in the college SMIS. Gather and interpret
relevant data and information. Clean and prep data required for all external reporting
requirements using existing auditing reports and tools.

Provide interaction with development and end-user personnel to determine data access
requirements, transaction rates, volume analysis, and other pertinent data required to
develop and maintain integrated databases and reports. Manage relationships between
database end-users and department resources. Communicate data administration concepts
to management and staff via oral and written reports and presentations.

Work with the department to configure software to perform testing, working at optimization
of capacity planning, data storage, efficiencies, and database growth.

Write and understand Microsoft Transact SQL. Write TSQL statements, stored procedures
and views using industry best practices for security and efficiency. Create, test and execute
SQL language code.

Create, develop and manage internal procedures for various job functions with the SMIS to
ensure data integrity and efficient processes. Determine the interrelationships between
solutions and requirements.

Work with the implementation team to build, customize and roll new SMIS solutions to the
organization.

Work with staff and academic departments to satisfy ad hoc reporting requirements,
including: Work with various groups to determine the exact nature of the reporting
required; determine if the required data is currently being collected; determine if reports
already developed will satisfy reporting requirements; use currently available reporting tools
to develop, verify and deploy new reporting.

Extract, summarize and compile data for required external reporting, including: IPEDS Fall,
Winter and Spring Surveys; OCCURS twice quarterly data submissions; College board
annual survey; Petersons annual survey; and Student Clearing House quarterly data
submissions.

Work with the Database Administrator and other college staff to develop and maintain a
standard set of internal reports that will be updated and published on a regular basis.

Use Microsoft Office tools to assist in compiling data for reporting and producing reports for
distribution.

QUALIFICATIONS
MANDATORY: Associates degree in computer science or related field or two years of
college, plus at least two years of direct, on-the job experience working with relational
database management system, such as Microsoft SQL Server. Experience in database
design, programming, and implementation using SQL or other ODBC-compliant tools.

PREFERRED: Bachelors degree in computer science or related field. Working knowledge of


Jenzabar client software. Use of Microsoft Reporting Services as it becomes more of the
primary reporting tool used by Jenzabar and TVCC.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS
Minimum physical exertion. While performing the duties of this position, the employee is
frequently required to sit, communicate, reach and manipulate objects, tools or controls.
The position requires mobility. Duties involve moving materials weighing up to 5 pounds on
a regular basis and up to 10 pounds on an occasional basis. Manual dexterity and
coordination are required over 50% of the work period while operating equipment such as
computer keyboard, mouse, calculator and similar machines.

WORKING CONDITIONS
Most work takes place in usual office working conditions, where the noise level is typical of
most office environments with telephones, personal interruptions, and background noises.
May work some evenings and weekends to complete projects or meet the needs of the
department.

Works under the general direction of the Database Administrator.
