EXAMPLES

This unit was

developed using a
backwards design of
instruction and
emphasized inquiry-
based learning.
Lifecycle Observations

Throughout the unit, students

observed caterpillars as they
changed throughout the lifecycle.
As the lifecycle progressed,
students tracked which stage the
butterflies were in on a class
wheel. In addition, students
recorded their observations and
documented their learning in
personal science journals. Classroom Display

Literacy Integration knowledge.

In this unit, students utilized a

variety of related literature
throughout the unit. An action-
research project was
implanted on this topic and
found a positive correlation
between integrating content
areas with interactive read-
alouds.
Art Integration
As students made observations
and organically generated
questions, they placed these
questions on the parking lot.
These student questions drove
instruction and planning of
future lessons.
Student-Driven
Instruction

High-levels of student
engagement was achieved
through hands-on, inquiry-
based learning. Here, a
student illustrates the
process in which a caterpillar
becomes a chrysalis.
