Outfitting Your Home to Age in Place
While moving to a retirement or assisted living facility may
be the right decision for some, more and more people are
choosing a concept called Aging in Place. is idea consists
of retrofitting ones home to make it safe and accessible for
the elderly, allowing seniors to remain in the familiarity of
their own homes longer. Here are some ideas on how you
can enhance the safety of your home as you prepare to enter
your golden years.
1. Prevent Falls, Especially in the Bathroom
Bathrooms are the number one place where falls occur, so
the majority of safety-enhancing design changes should be
made there. Installing grab bars in the shower, tub and toilet
area can help prevent falls, but theres no reason these
additions need to look institutional. Manufacturers have
created grab bars that are less utilitarian-looking, and more
stylish and multifunctionalfor example a unique toilet

I myself have also been nearly hit twice on the crosswalk at
Shell and Marine, the cars missing me by just inches. In
our condominium complex we have an elderly woman who
walks along Shell which in some places does not have a
sidewalk with her shopping cart. She and others are quite
vulnerable to speeding drivers.
I think the City of Redwood City needs to place speed bumps
on Shell Parkway between Davit and Marine Parkway, or
reduce the speed limit on Shell. Speeding on that stretch of
road creates a deadly hazard for both wildlife and pedestrians.
Note: If you see something wrong, dont be afraid to say something.

license plate number if possible. If you drive along Shell Parkway,
PLEASE slow down and pay attention to others along the way.
