CALIBRATION OF TORQUE BALANCE PRESSURE CONTROL USING

FLAPPER - NOZZLE

AIM: Calibrate the current for pressure using the Flapper Nozzle system
APPARATUS:
1. Pressure gauges
2. Current source
3. Digital ammeter
4. Input converter
5. Air compressor

THEORY:

Generally Flapper nozzle method is used for current to pressure

conversion when the flapper moves to the left about its pivot less air will leak
out and a larger pressure will be developed between the fixed restriction and
nozzle.
Regulated air supply enters through restriction and comes out through
the nozzle. Infront of the nozzle, a flapper is placed. The midpoint of the
flapper is fixed on a pivot. So the flapper is placed to move freely to and fro.
one end of the flapper is placed to near the nozzle and other end is placed near
the nozzle and other end is placed near the current carrying coil. This operating
coil energized by current flowing through it. As the current in coil is energized
by is increased, one of the flapper moves towards the coil and hence the other
end moves towards nozzle.
When the flapper moves towards the nozzle, there is increase in back
pressure. When the flapper moves away, there will be a decrease back
pressure. so the backpressure is directly proportional to the distance(x)
between the nozzle and the flapper.

PROCEDURE:
1) Compressor as well as current source are swithed ON.
2) Adjust the potentiometer to get 4mA current.
3) Adjust the value so that the pressure gauge reads 3PSI
4) Repeat step3 to get 20 mA current.
5) Repeat step4 so that pressure gauge reads 15 PSI.
6) The current signal to the I-P converter is varied in steps of 4 mA and
corresponding o/p pressure readings at gauge G3 are noted.
7) Plot the graph between current Vs Pressure.
