Structure

Conventional way of structuring a project is to write it in the form of a book consisting of

chapters. Although the number of chapters used is relative to the specific project and to the
course duration, a project organised into chapters would typically look like this:

1. TITLE PAGE - The opening page including all the relevant information.

2. ABSTRACT - A brief project summary including background, methodology &

findings.

3. CONTENTS - A list of the chapters and figures contained in the project.

4. CHAPTER 1 - BACKGROUND - A description of the rationale of the project.

5. CHAPTER 2 - LITERATURE REVIEW - A summary of the literature

supporting your project.

6. CHAPTER 3 - METHODOLOGY - A description of methodology used in your

7. CHAPTER 4-5 DATA ANALYSIS - A description of the work done & results.

8. CHAPTER 7 - DISCUSSION - Main conclusions based on the results

9. BIBLIOGRAPHY - A list of the references cited in your thesis.

10. APPENDICES - Additional materials used in the project.

Note: Numbers1-6 and 9 should be depicted in

the project report with certificate of approval

CHAPTER 3 METHODOLOGY:

Microstrip antennas basically consist of a radiating patch on one side of a dielectric

substrate, which has a ground plane on the other side. There are three popular models for
the analysis of microstrip antennas - transmission line model, cavity model, and full wave
model. The transmission line model is the simplest. It gives a good physical insight but is
less accurate. The cavity model is quite complex but gives good physical insight and is
more accurate.
We intend to design our antenna for the transmission purpose of the frequency of 4GHz.
Thus the resonant patch radius R2 is dictated by:

where, f110 , r , 0 and 0 are the resonance frequency, relative permittivity of

the substrate, free-space permittivity and free-space permeability, respectively.
The main feed is given by a coaxial transmission line of characteristic impedance 50. So
for matched impedance transmission we have to ensure that the characteristic impedance
of the microstrip feed line is also 50. The width of the feed line is given by:

7
ANSOFT HFSS Working procedure:
1) Designing the Microstrip patch:
Substrate dimensions: 80mm x 60mm x 31mil.
Semi-circular feed line and trace on the top face of the substrate. The semicircular feed line
has dimensions
w=1.465mm, t = 0.035mm, radius of curvature = 15mm.
Two circular patches of dimensions
t = 0.035mm, radius 10mm.
Encircled by the semi-circular feed lines the gap between them = 0.06mm.
A coaxial transmission line of characteristic impedance 50 fed at the center of the strip.

2) Assigning Materials
Select FR4_Epoxy from the materials and assign to the substrate.
Assign copper to the ground plane and the conducting planes.
Assign a user-defined material with dielectric constant 1.9 to the conducting core of the
coaxial cable.
3) Assigning Boundaries and Excitations:
We need to define a waveport at the source end of the coaxial line.
The ends of the microstrip feed line must be terminated with a matched impedance to avoid
reflection a lumped port is assigned at both ends of the feed line
The radiation box is created and assigned radiation boundary.
4) Solution Set-up:
Set up an Adaptive solution at 4GHz, with 15 passes and delta as .02.

8
Set up a Sweep solution from 2-8 GHz with a step size of 0.01.
5) Analyze the results
