Avoid low areas to prevent flooding inside the pen. Vehicles should also be able to easily access the pen, especially during harvest. % iy RIGHT MEASUREMENTS The stocking density of the pen should be about 1.5 square meters to 2 square meters per pig. A typical pen stocked with 10 pigs has a measurement of 4 meters by 5 meters, including the wallowing pond. Si USE THE RIGHT MATERIALS Use either wood, bamboo, or iron bars staked on concrete hollow blocks as the fencing and foundation of the pen. You may use anahaw, nipa, or even Gl sheets for sturdier roofs. Sy USE RICE HULL Rice hull is used as bedding material for the pigs. Typically, 2 to 3 feet of rice hull is placed on top of the natural soil or ground. Usually, the rice hull is replaced every cycle or harvest of the pigs. Sry CREATE A WALLOWING POND ‘Awallowing pond is provided for the pigs to allow for them to clean ‘and cool off during warm days. A pond also allows for a generally cleaner pen. The pond is located at the back of the pen, is 1 meter wide and spans the entire length of the pen. Maintain a shallow pool of water (about 1 to 6 inches deep only) during the daytime. Clean and empty the pond regularly in the afternoons. iy ALLOCATE AUTOMATIC DRINKERS Allocate automatic drinkers on the wall of the wallowing pond. It is best to position the drinkers at different heights to suit the different growth stages of the pigs.
