SCAN REGULATIONS / PLEASE READ CAREFULLY!

The following bibliographical information is drawn from periodicals and books present in the archive of the
Jazzinstitut Darmstadt. Our extensive periodical collection comprises more than 55,000 issues of some
1,050 jazz periodicals. Close to two-thirds of the collection has been indexed.

Following the more recent entries are abbreviations denoting the nature of the material in the respective
articles. These symbols are:

[A] = analytical remarks

[B] = extensive book review
[BT] = blindfold test
[C] = concert review
[D] = discography
[F] = feature article
[I] = interview
["I"] = article written by the respective musician himself
[N] = (very short) news item
[O] = obituary
[R] = extensive record review
[T] = transcription

Scans and Copies:

If you need scans or copies of any of these articles, you should first try to contact a library near you. For
scholars, journalists and serious researchers we offer both a paper and a virtual photocopy service - up to
5 articles per order. If you find the abbreviation "[digi.copy]" behind an entry that means that this article
has already electronically archived by us. You can order up to 10 articles marked with "[digi.copy]". Please
be aware that in a mixed order we will only accept 5 articles marked "[digi copy]" and up to 5 articles not
yet marked as scanned. You will receive your virtual copies in a secured PDF file which you can print but
will not be able to edit.

For scanned copies of any articles listed in our Jazz Index we have to ask the municipal fee for any
virtual - at the moment 0,50 Euro per page (regardless of whether they already have been scanned or
have to be scanned). There will be an additional 5,00 Euro service charge for every order of 5 / 10 articles
(see above). All copies have to be ordered in writing, by fax or e-mail, giving your complete postal
address, the exact bibliographical data: author, title, periodical, year/month, pages, annotations
("[digi.copy"]) and the scholarly or journalistic purpose of the order.

After payment we will send you the requested pages in a secured PDF-file. Should you need a (non-
secured) high-resolution (Tiff) scan of specific pages we will charge you 10 Euro per page. An order of
high-resolutions scans needs to be accompanied by a clear statement of the purpose of the order.

If you plan to visit the Jazzinstitut in person, we will be happy to make xerox copies for you, however, we
generally will make such copies on demand only so its us who will press the button, and you will have to
pay the municipal fee of 0,25 Euro per page for any xerox copies made during your visit. With most books
we can arrange a short-time lending which allows you to use the public xerox machines in a copy shop
across the street, however this option does not work with any of the items in our periodical collection. If
you need copies for your research, we advise you bring a digital camera. You will be allowed to make
digital notes for research reasons; we will charge a nominal fee of 5 Euro for the use of a camera per
research day. If you choose this option, please make sure to fill out the respective release form at the
begin of your visit.

Please note: All texts in the virtual copies you ordered are subject to copyright. If you quote verbatim,
make sure to state the original source. Using complete texts, whether in writing or as facsimile, requires
the explicit approval of the copyright holder. The virtual copies we made for you are meant specifically for
the research you indicated in your order. We ask you not to share the files with others.

If you visit the Jazzinstitut in person the copy costs will be cheaper (0,25 Euro per page) as you will collect
the material yourself and replace it on the shelves after the copying process.
