01:00:00 INTRODUCTION

The small craft used by the

Colonial Ministry of Defense today
can trace their roots back nearly a
century, where they got their start
as part of planetary defense forces.
Over the decades, these primarily
atmospheric craft evolved to be-
come the aerospace craft we find
so common today.
The Viper Tactical Superior-
ity Fighter has its roots back in the
planetary air forces used by various
colonies in the decades before the
Early Caprican Vipers (circa. 1950)
First Cylon War. The early Vipers
were propeller-drive aircraft; some
classified as pushers (engines at the rear of the aircraft), others as pullers (engines at the front).
All were equipped with a variety of guns and external hard-points for rockets, missiles, and
bombs.
While all of the colonies had some influence in the evolution of the Vipers in use today, the
most influential in the Vipers design was Caprica. While Picon was known for its naval vessels,
both planetary and space, Capricas air forces were the envy of the other colonies, with a great
many Caprican-made aircraft being imported to other colonies for use in their air forces.
This standard continued as advances in technology moved the aircraft industry into the jet
age until most of the aircraft in use by the air forces of 75% of the colonies was either Caprican-
made or home-grown variants of Caprican designs.
Therefore it came as no surprise that when Vipers were being designed for use with the
new space-faring craft in production, that designers looked to the successful Caprican designs for
inspiration. From the MkI up through the brand new MkVIII(S) Viper, that standard of excellence
has not changed nor is it ex-
pected to.

While the Viper is probably

one of the most recognizable
pieces of colonial military hard-
ware, the hard-working and oft-
maligned Raptor has become the
workhorse of colonial military and
civil services.
Like the Viper, The Raptor
is of Caprican influence, modeled
Modern Caprican Vipers (circa. 1983) almost exclusively from a VTOL
4 SMALL CRAFT REFERENCE MANUAL

craft used by the Caprican Ministry of

Defense in the 1980s.
From the early days of its incep-
tion as a multi-role support craft, the
Raptor has gained much popularity
amongst its crews. The Raptors design
is so robust and versatile, that only two
versions, the MkI and MkII have been
created. Both are still in use.
While no plans exist regarding
trying to improve upon the Raptors de-
sign and function, engineers recently in-
troduced a single-purpose variant of the
Cockpit of Caprican Ministry of Defense VTOL Aircraft
craft. This new craft, classified as a (circa. 1980s)
bomber, is a dedicated mission platform
and lacks many of the features that make the Raptor such a valuable and versatile craft.

Colonial shuttles can trace their ancestry to the passenger and cargo aircraft used by each
of the colonies over the decades. From the early age of flight, through the jet age, and into the
modern era of trans-atmospheric flight. Like the Raptor, the colonial shuttle is a robust craft; it is
capable of carrying both cargo and passengers.
Even in the colonial military, neither version, the MkI and MkII, of the shuttle are armed.
The improvements in the MkII over the MkI merely reflect the improvements and advances in
technology and engineering over the years.
Recently the Colonial Ministry of Defense has unveiled a military-only variant of the shuttle.
Classified as an assault shuttle, this new variant is designed purely for operations by the colonial
fleet and marines.

02:01:00 MKI VIPER

The MkI Viper was designed just prior to the start of the First Cylon War. These were the
first true aero-space fighters built by the colonies with a design pattered directly from the atmos-
pheric Vipers in use on Caprica, and several other colonies, for many years. They saw service with
the newly constructed Nova Class Battlestars as well as planet-side squadrons.
While a decent front-line fighter against the raiders in use by the Cylons, the MkI suffered
from many of the same drawbacks that plagued the Nova Class battlestars. Most notably was the
enormous amount of power required by the crafts laser torpedo cannons. Most pilots dialed back
the power settings on their cannons to approximately 60% in order to sustain a manageable
power balance between engines and weapons.
While this trade off gave them slightly more maneuverability and increased usage-time
with their weapons, the result was not what the designers or pilots hoped for especially in a
combat environment.
The MkIs cockpit instrumentation was a blend of analog dials and displays and networked
electronics. All-in-all, the MkI served well through the first couple of years of the First Cylon War,
until being replaced by the MkII models.

01:02:00 MKII VIPER

The MkII Viper made its appearance 22 months into the First Cylon War. Taking advantage of many
of the lessons learned in the first two years of the way, the MkII was a tremendous improvement overall,
and it didnt take long for the pilots to fall in love with the craft.
The MkII was designed with sleeker lines than those found on the MkI. Slightly larger swept-back
wings and a smaller tail fin helped reduce the Vipers profile and provided a more stable platform for atmos-
pheric operations. The MkIIs newer, upgraded engines delivered increased thrust and fuel efficiency, the
latter due in part to their lighter weight.
Upgrades to the cockpit included improved visibility with a redesigned canopy and upgraded instru-
mentation to allow for better information flow and access to controls for the pilot. The big difference be-
tween the instrumentation of the MkI and MkII Vipers was the lack of networking used on the electronics on
the MkII.
The MkII also featured a new weapons configuration. Both of the laser torpedo cannons from the
MkI were replaced with two 30mm kinetic-energy auto-cannon each with 800 rounds stored in the wings. In
addition, the MkII had an internal ordnance bay that could hold up to 8 interceptor missiles or up to 2
bombs.
The MkII served with distinction throughout, and for several years beyond, the First Cylon War. Be-
fore being surpassed by the MkIII, over 28,000 MkII Vipers had been constructed.

01:03:00 MKIII VIPER

Making its appearance in the last two years of the First Cylon War, the MkIII Viper utilized the les-
sons learned from a decade of war to create a vastly improved craft that superseded the MkII as the Colo-
nial Fleets primary space superiority and attack fighter for nearly a decade.
The MkIII featured a slightly advanced and reconfigured cockpit, though still lacking networked
electronics, that grouped certain controls and displays together to help the pilot operate the craft more eas-
ily and efficiently. In addition, the MkIII was given a sleeker profile with upgraded engines and guns.
The MkIII quickly became a favorite among pilots, who reported that the increased power and ma-
neuverability, as well as the re-configured cockpit, made for a better combat platform. Despite that, the
fame of the MkIII never reached the levels of the MkII, due in large part to the MkIIs longer service time
during the First Cylon War.
Despite that, many pilots, especially those who have flown both, consider the MkIII to be a better
overall combat platform than the MkII. The MkIII saw service as the front-line fighter for the colonial fleet
for over 18 years, when the MkV entered service.

01:04:00 MKIV VIPER

Presented to the Ministry of Defense approximately 16 years after the end of the First Cylon War,
the MkIV Viper was the first in a series of post-war designs for a new colonial fighter to replace the vener-
able and aging MkIII. Upon looking at the MkIV, one of the first things that is immediately apparent is the
similarity in design to the old MkI Viper. But that is where the similarities ended.
The MkIVs engines were larger than the MkIIIs and actually canted inward at a slight angle, essen-
tially focusing their thrust at a single point. The theory behind this was that doing so should actually in-
crease created velocity without added power and fuel, or the marked increase of associated gravitational
forces on the pilot and airframe. Unfortunately this theory didn't pan out in reality, and in fact placed in-
creased stress on the airframe when the turbo function of the thrusters was engaged.
The return to the larger airframe allowed for increased fuel and ordnance capacity, the former a
necessity for the larger engines. The MkIV also utilized the same cockpit canopy style as the MkI, though
kept the improved control layout from the MkIII. While the MkIV maintained the trend of non-networked
systems, it actually suffered from that decision. The increased size, power, and weight of the MkIV made
the craft almost unwieldy for all but the most talented or seasoned pilots under most flight conditions.
While approximately 100 MkIV Vipers were built as part of a test program, the Ministry of Defense
decided not to pursue full-scale production of the MkIV, citing the various problems learned during testing
such as engine performance, flight handling, and frequent problems with the ammunition feed system for
the MkIVs guns. Only two examples of the MkIV are known to still exist; one at the Colonial Museum of
Flight in Caprica City and the other in the main lobby of the Vergis Corporations headquarters on Tauron.

01:05:00 MKV VIPER

Approximately 9 months after the MkIV was turned down by the Ministry of Defense, the first proto-
type MkV was unveiled. At first glance, the MkV looked quite a bit like the MkIV, but a closer inspectionnot
to mention flying itrevealed it wasnt. While keeping what some would consider the almost bulkiness of
the MkIV, the MkV is actually much more maneuverable.
Where the MkIVs size allowed it to carry more ordnance, at the cost of maneuverability, the MkV
scales that capacity back but adds a third gun in the vertical stabilizer. This change makes the MkV a highly
effective and impressive gun platform, while still retaining the ability to carry and deliver an impressive
amount of ordnance on target.
The engines on the MkV are not angled like those on the MkIV were, thus eliminating the accompa-
nying associated problems, and also deliver slightly more power and better fuel economy. The materials
used to build the MkV are also new, giving the MkV a stronger and lighter airframe than the MkIV. This,
coupled with the improved engines, makes the MkV a highly maneuverable craft, in spite of its size.
The cockpit of the MkV was also improved, incorporating, for the first time since the MkI, networked
systems. While more fly-by-wire than the MkIII or MkIV, the MkV still retained analog gauges, both as the
tertiary back-up for the fully-electronic systems and due to feedback from pilots, who seemed to prefer hav-
ing them.
All-in-all the MkV was a great improvement over the failed MkIV project and served as the front-line
fighter for the Ministry of Defense for nearly 15 years. It was a favorite of many pilots, even after the MkVII
was introduced.

01:06:00 MKVI VIPER

Entering service approximately 15 years after the MkV, the MkVI Viper traced its design inspiration
to that of the MkIII. It is also the first Viper that doesnt use the traditional cream-colored or white painted
hull. Instead, the MkVIs hull is made of brushed Tetratriluminide that is subsequently sprayed with a special
sealant to help prevent corrosion. By not priming or painting the hull, several hundred pounds of weight
were saved.
While approximately the same length as the MkV, the MkVI comes in over a meter shorter in vertical
clearance. That combined with the slightly narrower wingspan, compared to the MkV, gives the MkVI a very
sleek look. New engines boost overall power for the MkVI by approximately 7% while maintaining an effi-
cient and acceptable rate of fuel consumption.
The cockpit configuration, while more streamlined than the MkV, is essentially unchanged from the
MkV. One of the biggest differences which, more so than any other, is believed to have led to the MkVIs
quick exit from colonial service was the removal of the third auto-cannon, which had been exceedingly
popular with pilots, who had spent the last 10 years flying the MkV. No real reason was ever given by the
Ministry of Defense for accepting such a design. While some engineers who allegedly worked on the MkVI
project reportedly explained that the removal of the third cannon was due to flight dynamics, most pilots
complained of the difficult flight dynamics and handling of the MkVI, compared to that of the MkV.
Despite whatever intentions or reasoning the Ministry of Defense had, the MkVI had numerous flaws
and detractors that it simply could not overcome. The craft ended up being the shortest-lived variant used
by the Ministry of Defense, having seen service in Colonial Fleet for only about four years. While it looked at
other new designs, the Ministry of Defense cancelled the contract for the MkVI after an initial production run
of 2,500 and instead retained the MkV as its front line fighter.

01:07:00 MKVII VIPER

The MkVII Viper almost didn't come to be. Five years after the failure of the MkVI, it was doubtful
that the Ministry of Defense was going to seriously consider another of the futuristic-looking Viper designs
being submitted. But the company with the winning bid, Phoenix Aerospace, had bet everything on this con-
tract and had already built a fully functional prototype. The prototype quickly won over the review commit-
tee and Phoenix Aerospace was given the contract.
The MkVII was in many ways even more streamlined than the MkVI and used the same specially-
treated brushed Tetratriluminide hull materials. But it boasted brand-new engines that delivered nearly 14%
more power than the MkV while boasting a 21% increase in fuel efficiency at standard operational speeds.
In addition, the MkVII boasted a vastly improved electronics suite in the cockpit.
The engineers had also done their homework when it came to the flight dynamics exhibited by both
the MkV and MkVI Vipers and the 2- and 3-gun layout. As such, not only does the MkVII mount 3 auto-
cannon like the MkV, but the wing-mounted cannon have been moved away from the fuselage and nearer
the wingtips. This simple solution achieved the weight balance that the MkVI failed to have, allowing the
MkVII to have the best maneuverability and handling of any Viper, second only to the MkIII.
In the 5 years since the MkVII was introduced into service, it quickly became the favorite of colonial
fleet pilots. Nearly all battlestars and fleet installations are now equipped with the MkVII; older Vipers being
either scrapped, transferred to decommissioning yards, or demilitarized and sold to the private sector. With
approximately 23,000 having been built at this point, the MkVII is the most prevalent Viper in the history of
the Ministry of Defense since the MkIII.

01:08:00 MKVIII(S) STEALTH VIPER

An off-shoot of the Stealthstar project, the MkVIII(S) Stealth Viper was over a decade in the mak-
ing, and even then only possible due to advances in electronics, metallurgy, and material processing tech-
niques. The MkVIII(S) takes a multi-tiered approach to the idea of battlespace stealth techniques. Where
the Stealthstar relied on techniques pioneered by the Orion Class Battlestar, the MkVIII(S) represents the
next evolution in stealth technology.
Unlike other Vipers used by the Ministry of Defense since the First Cylon War, the MkVIII(S) has
only two turbo-thrusters but is equipped with a micro-FTL drive giving it the capability of a small number of
80 SU (max) FTL jumps. The turbo-thrusters are situated slightly higher than on previous Viper models, with
the FTL drive just below and in-between them. While not as powerful as those on the MkVII, the MkVIII(S)s
turbo-thrusters are specially baffled to minimize detection while in use.
Contrary to rumors, the MkVIII(S) is not painted black. The coloring is from the specially-designed
hull plating. This highly classified material helps mask the DRADIS signature of the MkVIII(S) by
absorbing much of the energy from a DRADIS array instead of reflecting it back. In addition, the internal
structure of the Stealth Viper is designed to reflect DRADIS energy waves in a different direction than the
source of the energy.
All weapons carried by the MkVIII(S) are done so internally. The crafts twin auto-cannon are de-
signed to retract inside the crafts body until used and no external hard-points for ordnance exist. All ord-
nance, outside the auto-cannons, is deployed from the internal bay in the crafts underside.
Due to the advanced flight profile exhibited by the MkVIII(S), it carries the most advanced elec-
tronic instrumentation yet used in colonial craft and only the most experienced and capable pilots are even
trained in how to fly it. At this time, excluding the 6 prototypes used for testing, only 47 of these highly ad-
vanced, and expensive, craft have been built and are in service with the Colonial Fleet.

RAPTOR MULTI-MISSION CRAFT

40 SMALL CRAFT REFERENCE MANUAL
SMALL CRAFT REFERENCE MANUAL 41

03:01:00 MKI RAPTOR

The MkI Raptor made its debut approximately half-way through the First Cylon War,
though had been in development for several years prior, when the need for a small craft capable
of carrying-out Long-Range Courier, Reconnaissance, Search & Rescue, and Transport duties with-
out having to utilize valuable Vipers arose. All Raptor variants are capable of space-borne and at-
mospheric operations.
Aside from a rear-mounted 20mm rotary cannon for defense, nicknamed the Toaster Kil-
ler, the MkI Raptor does not typically carry any weapons for offensive operations. While the craft
has several external hard-points to mount a variety of mission-specific components, such as fuel
tanks, weapons pods, and instrument packages, it is most often used in a courier and/or transport
role.
One unique element of the MkI compared to its successor is its engines. The MkI Raptor
utilizes sub-light engines that are capable of being rotated; these variable-pitch engines allow the
MkI some surprising maneuverability thanks to its ability to adjust the vector of the engines
thrust.
The MkI Raptor served admirably for approximately twenty-five years after the end of the
First Cylon War until replaced in front-line service by the improved MkII version. Though retired
from service with the Colonial Ministry of Defense, the MkI can still be found in service in outlying
colonies and in the private sector.

03:02:00 MKII RAPTOR

The MkII Raptor entered service approximately 20 years after the end of the First Cylon
War. While capable of carrying out the same missions that the MkI had been designed for, the
MkII had a distinct advantage over the MkI. Thanks to advances in numerous fields, the MkII was
the first craft of its size to mount an FTL drive. This gave it much greater range, as well as flexibil-
ity, when it came to mission profiles.
The cost of the FTL drive was a smaller crew cabin and loss of the Toaster Killer weapon
system. While initially many pilots were not happy with losing the crafts only weapon, the ability
to conduct FTL jumps quickly won them over. In addition to the FTL drive, the MkII boasts more
powerful sub-light engines, though these lack the variable-pitch ability of their predecessors.
Improved flight controls and electronics suite make the MkII Raptor a valuable asset to the
Colonial Fleet, with specialized variants having been fielded in recent years expanding the Raptors
mission profile into areas such a battle-space management/control. The improvements have also
made the MkII somewhat easier to handle during atmospheric operations.
While appearing smaller than the MkI, the MkII Raptor is the same size and still has the
same passenger and cargo capacity as its predecessor, though the improved flight controls and
electronics means that a single pilot can effectively operate the craft if required.

03:03:00 SCIMITAR BOMBER

The Scimitar Bomber project arose from the perceived need of a craft designed specifically
to carry a large amount of ordnance. Instead of starting from scratch, it was decided to use the
proven airframe of the Raptor as the base for the new craft. It took three years of development
but in late-2040 the first prototype was complete.
The power plant and maneuvering systems on the Scimitar, while technically more power-
ful than those on the MkII Raptor, do not make the Scimitar faster or more maneuverable. Instead
the additional power is necessary due to the increased weight carried by the bomber. Internally,
instead of a compartment for electronics and passengers, the area behind the cockpit is dedicated
to large ordnance bay. The cockpit is accessed through a small hatch on the port side of the craft,
in approximately the same location as the large side-hatch on the Raptor, only about half as wide.
In addition to the internal ordnance bay, the Scimitar has eight external hard-points and a
chin-mounted auto-cannon. The Scimitar uses a crew of two: Pilot and Co-pilot/Bombardier. By
mid-2041, the first three squadrons of Scimitar Bombers had been fielded, two assigned to the
Nova II Class Battlestar Prometheus and one to the Mercury II Class Battlestar Katana.

04:01:00 MKI SHUTTLE

The MkI Shuttle served the colonial military as well as private sector for nearly a hundred
years. It was designed for to carry both passengers and cargo and operate in space as well as in a
planetary atmosphere. Rugged, though slow, the MkI Shuttle is the venerable workhorse of the
colonies for moving people and cargo around.
The MkI Shuttle is not equipped with an FTL drive, making it a sub-light only vehicle and
limiting is practicality to short-range or low-priority transports. While replaced in in 2023 with the
MkII variant, the MkI Shuttle can still be found in use throughout the colonies due to its rugged
construction and durability.
The MkI Shuttle has two large hatches, one aft and one to the port side, for on- and off-
loading cargo, and one personnel hatch on the port side for passengers and crew. Its interior is
divided into two large open decks, with the passenger compartment/cockpit in the forward section
of the upper deck. The lower deck is large enough to hold 2 colonial land-rams. In addition, the
craft is equipped with a ventral hatch for emergency egress or deployment of colonial troops (i.e.,
Para-drop).
One of the biggest drawbacks to this colonial workhorse is the lack of in-flight refueling
capability. This oversight further limits the crafts endurance and range to colonial anchorages and
planet-side facilities.

04:02:00 MKII SHUTTLE

Introduced in 2023, the MkII Shuttle was a great improvement over the MkI. While have
the same passenger space as the MkI Shuttle, the MkII was able to carry greater cargo loads
thanks to its improved powerplant and engines. In addition, advanced in metallurgy meant that
the crafts frame was stronger, yet lighter, than its predecessorwhich equates to greater range
due to increased fuel efficiency.
Unlike the MkI Shuttle, the MkII has been equipped with an FTL Drive, the same type used
on the MkII Raptor. This gives the MkII much greater range and versatility with work assign-
ments. Like the MkI, the MkII Shuttles interior space is divided into two decks, with the passenger
compartment/cockpit located in the forward portion of the upper deck.
The MkII has 2 large cargo hatches, one aft and one in the bow under the cockpit. These
hatches allow quick on- and off-loading of cargo and vehicles from the shuttles lower deck. There
are also 2 side hatches, one on each side of the shuttle, that provide access to both the upper and
lower cargo decks. On the port-side, just forward of the cargo hatch, is a personnel hatch for pas-
sengers and crew.
There are 4 emergency egress hatches on the MkII, two dorsal hatches and two ventral
hatches. The ventral hatches are large enough to be used for para-drop deployment of colonial
troop if required. The MkII Shuttle is capable of in-flight refueling of her sub-light engines.
In case of emergency, the entire passenger compartment/cockpit can be jettisoned and act
as an emergency lifepod with enough emergency supplies and oxygen to support 30 people for 10
hours.

04:03:00 SPECTRE ASSAULT SHUTTLE

Designed in response to requests for a dedicated assault/insertion craft for colonial ground
forces, the Spectre Assault Shuttle was born. Based on the MkII Shuttle frame, the Spectre has
been reinforced in key areas to withstand greater frame stresses as well as protection for enemy
fire. Like the MkII Shuttle, the Spectre is FTL-capable.
Improved sub-light thrusters give the Specter a slightly improved acceleration rate and
ability to lift and carry slightly heavier cargos. In addition, the Spectre has been armed with 4 de-
fensive KEW turrets and a half-dozen small interceptor missiles for defense. Also, unlike the MkI
and MkII Shuttles, the Spectre is equipped with flare and chaff pods like the MkII Raptor.
Like the MkII Shuttle, the Spectres interior space is divided into two decks. The upper
deck is dedicated to troop transport, with some cargo capacity while the lower deck is dedicated
to cargo, including ground-support vehicles (i.e., Land Rams). Unlike the MkII Shuttle, the upper-
decks lifeboat capability was lost due to the different internal configuration of the upper deck.
The Spectre retains the same hatch configuration as the MkII Shuttle, including emergency
egress hatches.
As of 2041, approximately three dozen Spectre Assault Shuttles had been delivered to the
Colonial Ministry of Defense and assigned to various ground-force units stations aboard major
fleet assets, such as the Nova II, Mercury II Class, and well as select Block 02 Mercury Class Bat-
tlestars. There are no plans at this time to deploy the Spectre on Valkyrie or the remaining Colum-
bia Class Battlestars.

05:01:00 STEALTHSTAR
The Stealthstar program was begin in 2021 as a response to heightened nerves regarding
the intentions of the Cylons. After ten years of research, the first prototype Stealthstar was
launched.
The Stealthstar incorporated the agility of a Viper with the stealth capabilities of the Orion
Class Battlestar. The thought-process was that for reconnaissance purposes, the special DRADIS-
absorbent coating, such as what was used on the Orion Class, combined with the sleeker profile
and smaller size of a Viper would provide sufficient protection of enemy DRADIS.
The Stealthstar is not capable of atmospheric flight, and the removal of its vertical stabi-
lizer resulted in the shifting of its high center-line thruster to below the other two thrusters. The
engines on the Stealthstar were specially designed to provide the craft with a great deal of speed,
to help compensate for its lack of defensive systems, In addition, all three engines were designed
with special baffles to help in masking the crafts presence for thermal and visual scans.
The body of the Stealthstar, while necessary to the stealth characteristics of the craft,
make it handle unlike any other colonial craft. As such, only extremely experienced senior pilots
are allowed to volunteer for Stealthstar training.
While considered a success, the loss of Stealthstar 7746VA in mid-2035, caused many to re
-think the project and whether or not it had actually created a stealth craft that could carry out
the reconnaissance missions desired. As such, research into stealth functionality continued.
The Stealthstar is equipped with the same electronics suite as the MkV Viper and is armed
with 2 MEC-A10 auto-cannons for protection. It is unknown exactly how many Stealthstars were
constructed.
