APPLIED NUMERICAL ANALYSIS - PROBLEM SHEET IV
I M.E CIM/ED/ENERGY

Answer the following:

1. Consider a rectangular steel sheet of dimension 8cm x 8cm. Heat is transferred in the sheet
with left edge maintained at 100C, right and lower edge maintained at 50C and the upper
edge insulated. Find the steady state nodal temperatures in the sheet using Leibmanns
iteration, considering the heat flow is governed by Laplace equation. Assume the step size
of nodal spacins as 2cm.(compute one iteration)

2. Solve for the steady state temperatures in a rectangular slab that is 1cm wide and 1cm high.
There is no heat gained or lost from the surface of the slab. Place nodes in the interior
spaced 0.25cm apart and find the nodal temperature using Leibmann iterative technique.
The heat is governed by 2 = 2 + 2 + 2 . The edges of the slab are maintained at u(x,0) =

0, u(x,1) = 80, u(0,y) = 100 and (1, ) = 10, where u is the temperature of the slab.

3. Consider a square slab of length 4cm. The slab is subjected to heat for testing. If initially the
slab is held at 100 C
at left end, 150 C at top surface, 75 C at right surface and at bottom
there is a heat flux at a rate of 15. Find the steady state temperature of the slab at nodes
created at 2cm distance using Leibmann technique.
4. Solve for the steady state temperatures in a rectangular slab that is 8cm wide and 8cm high. There is
no heat gained or lost from the surface of the slab. Place nodes in the interior spaced 2cm apart and
find the nodal temperature using ADI method. The edges of the slab are maintained at u(x,0) = 0,
u(x,8) = 8+2x, u(0,y) = y2/2 and u(8,y) = y2, where u is the temperature of the slab. (Compute two
iterations)
5. A plate 2.4m x 2.4m is subjected to temperatures as shown in the figure.
Use a square grid length of 0.6m and find the temperature at the interior nodes using
Alternating Direct Implicit method. Represent the solution set in matrix format. (Compute 2
iterations)
6. Represent the matrix form of the nodal solutions for prob. 1, 2, 3,4,5.
7. Find the nodal temperatures of the following grid following Laplace equation, using
Leibmann method. Nodal spacing is 0.25.(one iteration)
