Academic Integrity Assignment

1. Plagiarism is commonly referred to as

...the passing off of another persons work as ones own, whether deliberate or
accidental.

2. How will student work be checked for plagiarism? (List at least two ways)

- Usage of plagiarism identification software such as Turnitin

- Checking with the work of other students

3. Sanctions for plagiarism include (list at least two possible consequences):

- Getting a 0 on the assignment

- A note on the student record
- Possible expulsion from the course

4. What is the difference between accidental plagiarism and deliberate

plagiarism?

- Accidental plagiarism is unintentional and is generally a result of poor

citation, poor referencing, poor preparation, or a misunderstanding of
plagiarism.
- Deliberate plagiarism is intentional and is when someone purposefully claims
someone elses work as their own.

5. How can you avoid plagiarism, while still integrating support (ideas and
quotes) in your own work?

- You can avoid plagiarism by using only your own words in your writing when
not quoting directly, and referencing the original source when paraphrasing
or summarizing ideas. If direct quotations are used, the author should be

properly credited and quotation marks should be put around the quotation to
show that it is not yours.

6. Other than the written work, what other items can be plagiarized? Can you
still use these items? How?

- Music, drawings, speeches, structural models, and statistics can also be

plagiarized.
- They can be used as long as you reference and give credit to the creator(s).

7. Do some internet research and find at least one website (not listed in the
Academic Integrity Policy or on the Common Craft Video) that helped you
understand how to avoid plagiarism.

practice. If I have any questions (before the course begins or when completing an
