OVERVIEW OF THE FARM
Mashopa Agricultural Development Company Nigeria limited is a sophisticated fish farm that is located
at plot 3, kilometer 2, Olubadan Estate, new ife road, Ibadan. It deals mainly on fish farming with various
sections or units. It also involves in the rearing of animals. The farm provides services in areas such as
supply of fingerlings, pond construction and management re-circulatory system, fish feeds and
accessories, concentric feasibility studies and so on. The farm is headed by Mr Mashopa Abdullahi
Adeniyi who is the managing director of the farm and who granted me the opportunity to ask him the
questions. The interview was conducted on this very farm on the 21st of May, 2017. Attached to this
report is the copy of the video the interview. Below is the report of the responses he gave to each question
asked.

MOTIVATION
He said his motivation was borne out of the desire to study medicine in the tertiary institution that was
met with several disappointments on many occasions. He developed interest in fishery when his father
took him to a family friend whose son just returned from Greece after completing his course of study
which happened to be fishery. There, he was shown some video clips and pictures which he found
pleasing and interesting. From there, he developed strong passion and interest in fishery. This was made
possible because of his cut-off mark which is way below that of medicine. He then changed his course to
fishery and got admitted to the fishery department in the faculty of Agriculture, university of Ibadan after
which he graduated and established himself in the sector till date.

SYSTEM OF MANAGEMENT
The farm is relatively small scale to medium enterprise which displays a great potential to be one of the
best and largest fish farm in Nigeria. Though, it has been greatly hampered by inadequate financing.

TYPE OF LAND
The land is located in a valley, that is, a lowland. This makes the suitable for the construction of ponds
because it is very fertile and has high water holding capacity which prevents seepage of water from the
ponds.
SOURCES OF WATER
The farm uses stream as a source of water for the grower section of the farm and uses power generating
set to supply water to the hatchery which needs constant supply of water for adequate development of the
fingerlings. Also, the location at which the is sited helps to provide water to the farm all year round as a
result of being a valley.

NEARNESS TO MARKET
The farm is strategically located along brewery road and surrounded by big markets such as Gbagi and
Iwo road markets which are one of the largest commercial hubs in Ibadan. This puts the farm at a great
advantage because these markets provides large numbers of customers and ready-made platforms to sell
the farm produce readily.

ROAD ACCESSIBILITY
The fish farm is easily accessible to almost all means of transportation such as motorcycle, cars, heavy
duty vehicles and many more. This helps greatly in the conveyance of the farm produce to the various
markets on time and easy accessibility of the customers who want to buy fresh fish to the farm.

YEARS OF EXPERIENCE
He has used more than 25 years in the profession according to what he said. After graduating from the
University, he worked at IITA in Ibadan for ten (10) years before moving to Zartech where he used up to
5 years before moving on to establishing his own fish farm since then up till this moment.

SIZE OF THE PONDS

There are many ponds on the farm with various sizes. The largest pond on the farm is 120 by 100m in size
while others range from 80by 50m,70 by 40m and so on. The largest pond has the capacity to
accommodate over 30,000 fish stock.

TYPE OF FISH PRODUCED

The farm deals mainly in the rearing of catfish and tilapia fish. Although, the catfish are reared in large
quantity than the tilapia fish because of acceptability problem of tilapia to people.

MONOCULTURE OR POLYCULTURE?
The farm practices polyculture, the rearing of two different species of fish together in one and only pond.
He gave the advantages of practicing polyculture as having increased yield and subsequently, income, use
of tilapia as a gift to friends and relatives and use of the tilapia fish to feed the catfish because of their
high rate of reproduction as compared to the catfish. This helps in controlling their growth in the pond.
INPUT AND OUTPUT OF THE FARM
Input on the farm include; feeds, drugs, fingerlings, fryers, fuel to power the generator, coal used in the
processing unit to process the fish. The above are the variable inputs used on the farm. Fixed inputs used
on the farm include; milling machine for processing feed materials, oven, power generating set.
Output on the farm include; feeds, fingerlings, fryers and table size fishes. The number of fish produced
in one production cycle depends on a number of factors which can be controlled and which cannot be
controlled.

PROFIT PER NAIRA INVESTED

Based on his analysis of the production and marketing situations on the farm, he gets 50k per 1naira
invested and sometimes higher than that. Analysis of the production of the just concluded cycle is as
follows:
Cost of production= #4,000,000
Revenue = #6,000,000
Profit = #2,000,000
Profit per # invested= 50k

COMMENT
The farm is a very profitable one given the level of input at its disposal being not large. The cos analysis
of the farm also portrayed the farm as being healthy. Therefore, the farm can get help from various
sources because of its performance. Given that the fish farming industry in Nigeria is a fast growing one
with increasing demand for fish and fish products. There is need for the government to increase the
funding towards a sustainable production of fish and to put Nigeria as one of the largest producers of fish
in the world.
