Information sheet on
N95 Respirator Fit-testing

Background
A comprehensive respiratory protection programme is essential to guard health care workers
against infectious diseases transmitted via air-borne route. A respirator of adequate filtering
efficiency, as well as being tight-fitting, is an essential piece of equipment to achieve this
purpose.
In Hong Kong, the N95 respirator is one of the most commonly used standard. The fit-test is
conducted to assess which model or size is most appropriate for individual wearer. This can
be done quantitatively or qualitatively. The Department of Microbiology offers qualitative
fit-test for all our medical students.

The Fit-testing
1. All students need to attend the fit-test. You are not allowed into certain wards (e.g.
isolation wards) without being fit-tested.
2. No eating, drinking (except water) or chewing gum for at least 15 mins before the test.
3. Bring a bottle of water to rinse your mouth during the test.
4. Please revise how to properly don on a N95 respirator. Further instruction will be
given during the session.
5. A solution, either sweet (Saccharin-based) or bitter (Bitrex-based) is used to
determine whether acceptable facial-fit is achieved.
6. For student(s) failing the qualitative fit-test, you will be referred to the HA NTEC
Mask fitting clinic for the quantitative fit-test.
7. Keep your own record of the appropriate model and size of N95 respirator.
