Abstract

Automation has been playing a vital role in the 21st century. With the development
of modern technology, smart phones have also been integrated with android
system application and become a constant necessity for every individual on this
planet. Smart home and security automation are not suitable for residences in
Ethiopia but also can be design-specific for industries, hotels, government
agencies, private sectors, among others. The objective of this study is to verify the
effectiveness of a control system that makes utilize the theory of fuzzy logic to
control lights, power outlets, monitor temperature and control door lock. This
research paper presents a micro controller remote home controlled automation
systems controlled by voice command using smart phones. Such integration of
systems will enable users to control appliances with their voice. This study
employed a combine descriptive developmental method and design research.
Design research is foundational to creating products, services, and systems that
respond to human needs. The control circuit consists of an Arduino Mega micro
controller, which processes the user commands and control switching of
devices. The connection between the micro controller and the smartphone is
established via Wifi, a widespread wireless technology used for sharing data. This
system consists of two modules: the hardware interface module, and the software
communication module. At the heart of this system is the Arduino Mega micro
controller which is also capable of functioning as a micro web server and the
interface for all hardware modules. All communications and controls in this
system pass through the said micro controller. To address the interface between
users and the microcontroller, a graphical user interface is developed on smart
phones to access the functionality of each automated systems. The application
consists of functionality such as Light and Temperature controlling. When the
application starts, the user is authenticated at first and then he will be able to
navigate the main screen. The main screen has a list of all functions among which
user can select any function which the owner wants to control and monitor. After
selecting a function, he would be able to see a current status of a particular
device. All in all, the results of the experiments shows that the system is
efficient utilizing fuzzy logic and the developed prototype using arduino micro
controller has able to control effectively the lights, switch power outlets, monitor
temperature and manage door lock from the smartphone.
