describe the steps it takes for a bill to become a law.
Students will be able to design their
own bill and create a digital visual aid to support their proposal.
Students will be able to present an idea
for their law to the class. Procedures Introduction 1. Introduce the topic of the law making process. - What are laws? - Who can think of a law that we have in the United States? - Who can think of a law that we have in Louisiana? - Who can think of a law that we have in this classroom? - Why do we have so many laws? 2. Ask the students what they know about the law making process. - Who knows what a bill is? - Does anyone know how a bill is made into a law? Explicit Instruction 1. Show the School of Rock video Im just a bill twice through. 2. Explain the steps of how a bill becomes a law using the How A Bill Becomes a Law Slideshow. - A congressman creates Bill. - The congressman attempts to get support from other congressman. - The speaker of the house reads the bill to the House of Representatives. - The house votes on the bill, and if the majority votes yes, the bill goes on to the senate. If no, the bill is dead. - The senate votes on the bill, and if the majority votes yes, it goes to the President. - If the President signs the bill, the bill becomes law. If the President does not agree with the bill, he can Veto the bill. - If the bill is vetoed, it returns to the House and the Senate, and they vote on it again. - If the bill passes through both the House and the Senate with a 2/3rds majority vote, the bill becomes a law. Guided Practice 1. Students are to take their knowledge of the law making process and think of a bill that could make their community or school a better place. 2. Students will then create a digital visual aid to display their bill, using a method of their choosing (i.e. PowerPoint, Prezi, Word Cloud, etc.). 3. Students will present their bill to the class using their digital visual aid. 4. The class will then vote on if they think the bill is good enough to become a law.
