Can ©, Metpon 18 WWW.PARTITA.RU The composer German Grigoriyevich Okunev (19311973) is the distinguished representative of the Russian composition school during the second half of the 2ieth century. Okunev was bora in Leningrad and overcame the Blockade. Being a child he was awarded the medal «For the Defence of Leningrad» tor his participation in the concerts on the Baltic navy ships. Having graduated from the piano and composition faculties of the Leningrad Conservatoire, he studied at Dmitri Shostakovich until 1964. Thesame year Okunev started his pedagogical activity at the Conservatoire as the teacher of composition, In. 1972 he became the member of the Leningrad Composers Union directorate. Numerous wonderful works belong to German Okunev, such as two symphonies. the ballet «Greateoat», orchestral suite «At the Festive Neva, piano cycle «The North’s Echoes», Concerto for piano with chamber orchestra, vocal cycle to the verses by Marina Tsvetayeva, Concerto for hautboy and ‘hamber orchestra, Sonatina for trumpet and piano, Scherzino for clarinet and piano. Quintet for the winds, «Leningrad Engravings» and other chamber instrumental ensembles. Among the executants there were Mariya Karandashova, Mikhail Vainian, Lubov Bruk, Mark Taimanov, Maria Grinberg, Hanasi Chinakayev, Anatoly Lyubimov. Vitaly Buyanovsky, Victor Venglovsky. Scherzo and Adagio — the kind of diptych for trombone and piano — was dedicated to the trombonist Victor Venglovsky The Scherzo is distinct for its ample saturated existence in time, its light and rhythm, Vivid rhythmical pulse functions as the whole composition’s core. This unstopped perpetual pulse marks the usual trombone register’s colour. The character peculiar to this genre varies from tense concentration to striking emotional outbursts The Ada gio is the elegiae lucid sorrow and touching melancholy lyrical mood, depicted by means of the soloing instrument's timbre. Okunev achieves espectal charm, while resorting to the most subtle articulation nuances.
