70s Style Room Materials

Lesson by Ciro Sannino | More about: installment1-2, Materials

LESSON#12 Materials (Step3)

HD VIDEO / Narrated / 7
MAX FILES to download with all the V-Ray settings
Create basic V-Ray materials;
Shiny and opaque reflections;
Drawing reflection on surfaces;
Manage incidence angle;
Solve overexposures;
Create different designs.

Lets move on step 3 of the 5-Step Render Workflow :

our complete method to manage render process in 5 easy steps.

The previous step was the crucial Light Balance, now its time to add colour: how to create materials
quickly. At the end of this lesson youll be able to produce this image:

Refund and Privacy Policy

Materials Step 3
In this video we will apply the general rules from Lesson #8. Also I will show you how to enhance
reflections easily with a soft V-Ray Light.

This step can be split in two parts:

1. assign colors (diffuse + textures) and check if lighting is still fine;

2. add reflections and refractions.

To make a shorter video, every book model is already mapped (its just a simple texture) and below you
also find a Pdf guide to download, with all material settings.

MATERIALS PDF: Download the V-Ray Material Guide > right click > save link as

CONCEPTS:

Add only main colors/textures;

Check the exposuse: if exposure is fine, jump to add reflections/refractions;
If the image is under or over exposed, just modify shutter speed to find the right exposure;
Add reflections/refractions;
Use soft V-Ray lights to enhance reflections (looking for the result, turn off the others);
Dont worry for grainy now. We will talk about in step 4: final render.

FIX OVEREXPOSURE

Before completing this step you will need to check that everything is perfect. We are still working in low
definition, but everything must be ok from here. If a single object is overexposed (usually this happend
with bright objects) you make it just a little bit gray. Usually this trick works fine.

EXERCISE

Dont modify the lights anymore! Since the light balance is ok, just be concentrated on materials.
(books are already mapped to speed up the exercise)

hi ciro!

questions:

1. the shutters speed always have to change for differents scene?

2. its mean i have to find the correct shutter speed for each scene?

thanks.

Hi sandro,
YES! To be photorealistic shutter speed (as in the real world) must changes according to
the amount of light fo your scene. Usually interiors are classified as medium amount of
light, so shutter speed = 50 is consistent with settings of a real DSLR in the real world.

Hey Ciro,
Let me ask you a question, What should we do if we are running out of empty material slots. eg: If Ive
many objects in the scene for which I got to create many materials & finally I come to know that I have
not enough slots, then what do I do..?

Hi Sagar, I shared the answer for your question in the Problems&Solutions area you see in
your dashboard. This is the direct link: http://www.learnvray.com/solutions/new-materials/ :)

Hello!
I would like to ask about the applying textures. When I apply the textute for the wallpaper the bitmap is
applied only one time on the whole surface. So to fix this I use tiling.. Is it normal and how could I do it
without tiling.

Thank you!

Hi Vladko, you should use the modifier UVW MAP. If you dont know this please look into
3ds max guide(F1), its the simpler and basic way to control textures.

Hi Ciro,
I tried to make the exercise, but there is a reflection on some white light on the fridge on your picture. I
think in the scene one light missing. Am I correct?

Hello Akbar,

The Mixing Curve is used to adjust the fusion degree between the textures (or colors) by
acting on the contrast of the mixing channel. For example in Black Damask Silk material:
Enabling the use of the curve, with the default values y ou get a contrast and a greater
definition of the texture used for mixing the two falloff (wall7.tiff), obtaining so more marked
result. With different values
of Upper and Lower you can adjust the contrast of mixing, to
achieve more or less soft.

same problem.. what may cause this ?

Usually is due to a lack of memory..

Hello Ciro,

There is a slight over exposure on the wall and on the top of the fridge, is this an example of where you
would use exponential as opposed to linear colour mapping?

Hi Brandon, yes youre right ut in this case is so little and it does not cause too much lost
in details that you can keep render in linear. Of course you can use exponential, it wont be an
error.

Hi Syed, lessons are progressive and along the course will arrive the moment also for
mapping reflections and refractions. Enjoy!
