6. FITTINGS

6.1. Fittings shall be designed by the fabricator in accordance with Sections 6.2 to 6.7. Fittings shall
resist all forces acting on them at the specified design pressures and test pressures, when in
service.

6.2. Dimensions shall confirm to Table F.

6.3. Flanges on fittings shall conform to Section 7.

6.4. Three-way fittings (such as Tees, Laterals, Wyes) shall be reinforced with additional laminates in
order to limit distortion under pressure.

The maximum distortion of any part of their outside surface at 1.5 times design pressure, or at
specified test pressure, whichever is higher, shall be 1% of the diameter of the smallest outlet,
measured from the centerline axis of the fitting.

Three-way fittings shall not develop stress cracks or crazing in the crotch area, inside or outside,
when pressurized as noted above.

6.5. Fabricators must be prepared to submit data from full scale tests to substantiate their fitting design.

6.6. Fittings are acceptable without full scale tests, if designed and fabricated within the following
guidelines.

6.6.1. Elbows

Structural laminate shall have 1.5 times the number of mat and woven rovings specified for hand
lay-up pressure pipe in Table D. Flanges shall be constructed as per Fig. 7.1, as an integral part of
the fitting laminate. Butt ends shall be tapered at approximately 10:1 to the minimum wall
thickness given in Table D.

6.6.2. Mitered Elbows

Standard pipe section may be mitered and overlaid with laminate specified for butt joints in Section
(5.5)* and (Table C)*. Miters shall not be more than 30, unless noted otherwise on drawings.
Radius of elbows shall be 1.5 x nominal ID of pipe. Pipe length either side of the PI (Point of
Intersection of centerlines) may be of any length to suit piping layout and shipping restriction.
However, minimum distance D in Table F from first (or last) miter to flange face or field joint has to
be maintained.

In order to determine the minimum distance for locating flanges of field joints from P.I. (see Fig.
6.1), proceed as follows:

Step 1: Select Dimension D (from Table F)

Step 2: Calculate distance for 2 miter elbows as follows:

6.6.3. Reducers

The large end of the reducer will determine the wall thickness as specified in Table D. Flanges
shall be constructed as per Fig. 7.1 or 7.2, as an integral part of the fitting, including the stub
Dimension F for reducers R3, R4, R7 and R8. On the small side, flanges with back-up rings
require flanged stubs of Dimension L in Table H with butt joints.

6.6.4. Molded Tees

Liner and structural laminate shall be constructed with rounded transition between branch and run.
Radius of this transition shall be equal to 1/3 of the ID of the branch or 4" maximum. Use 1.5 times
the number of mat and woven rovings specified in Table D for pipe of equal diameter and pressure
rating to the run of tee. Taper butt ends at 10:1 to the nominal wall thickness in Table D. Flanges
shall be full face type, See Section 7.3.

Molded tees for design pressure over 75 psi shall be reinforced with bands of continuous filament
rovings wound at uniform tension diagonally across main run and circularly around branch
[see Fig. 6.2 (a) and (b)].

Width of bands shall be 1/3 of ID of branch, up to 4" maximum. Thickness of bands shall be 1/3 of
wall thickness of tee, but minimum shall be 1/8". Bands shall taper to feather edges. A filler-
laminate equal to wall thickness of the tee shall be placed centered under crossing of the bands. It
shall taper to a feather edge at a radial distance of 1/2 of the main run diameter.

7.8.2. Gasket materials shall have a maximum Type A Durometer Hardness of 70 (ASTM D2240), and a
minimum thickness of 3/16" for flanges 12" and smaller, and 1/4" thickness for flanges larger than
12".
Only full face gaskets shall be used with full face flanges.
7.8.3. Galvanized steel washers as per ANSI B27.2, Type A shall be used under all bolt heads and nuts
on full face flanges.

If necessary, cut off a segment of washer (maximum 3/16"), for clearance between bolt and FRP
stub. DO NOT CUT LAMINATE to suit washer.

7.9. Drilling

7.9.1. Full face flange diameters, drilling of flanges and back-up flanges shall conform to the following
standards:

2" up to 24" sizes, ANSI B16.5 for 150# steel flanges

26" up to 48" sizes, ANSI B16.1 for 125# C.I. flanges

(Dimensions in Table H are based on the above standards.)

7.9.2. Bolt holes in flanges shall be drilled, not molded in, except as noted in Section 7.3 for built up ring
'F' (Fig. 7.2).

7.9.3. Inside of bolt holes and outside edge of flanges shall be brush coated with resin. Bolt holes shall
be drilled larger, so that after coating of exposed fibers, holes will have the required diameter.

8. PIPING INSTALLATION

8.1. FRP piping systems shall be supported in accordance with DS 4S-30.03 and 4D-20.10.

8.2. Anchors shall be placed as shown on piping layout drawings.

8.3. Field joints shall conform to Section (12)*.

8.4. Flanged stubs or fittings shall be bolted to equipment or to other fixed flanges, with proper gaskets
in place, before joining them with butt and strap joints to the piping system.

8.5. Bolts of FRP flanges shall be tightened uniformly with a torque wrench. Approximate torques
required for sealing full face FRP flanges:

Size up to 8" 40 ft. lb.

10" to 12" 100 ft. lb.
14" to 24" 150 ft. lb.
30" to 36" 200 ft. lb.
