Reflection on the Future of Human Beings

Nineteen Eighty-Four, written by George Orwell, was chosen by TIME magazine

as one of the 100 best English-language novels from 1923 to 2005 for its influence

both on literature and politics. The background of this novel is a world governed by a

totalitarian state, which controls its people by Telescreen and brainwash. Winston

Smith, a man works in Ministry of Truth, is gradually mistrusting what the party tells

as knowing more about the history by reading the confidential documents and

banned books. Lamentably, his propose of overthrowing tyranny is revealed, thus, he

is tortured and finally killed by the government.

In this novel, Orwell satirizes the totalitarianism by creating an imaginary world.

Though this world seems ridiculous, the plots in this book such as brainwash and

massacres were put on the stage in the Russia and China. Tragedies like Winston

Smith were repeated again and again on earth. Orwell tries to convey a thorough

reflection on the future of human beings in this book, reminding us the nature and

horror of the totalitarianism. After reading this book, not only should we examine

the world we live in, but we should also reconsider which kind of future we want to

have and how we should do to avoid the tragedies depicted in the novel. (210 words)
