Maschine Hardware Version 1.5
March 2010
Introduction.

I take no credit for the content of this document which is simply a collection of commands used
when operating NI Maschine hardware. I have compiled existing known workflow functions into a
concise and easy to reference, singular, location. Thank you to Native Instruments and the staff who
support us well on the Forum, and thank you to all the other music producers who use Maschine
and share their learning on the web forums.

Please let me have any feedback, offer changes or additional hints or tips ideally via the forum of to
my email at neil@runbox.com

Concepts

Maschine works essentially on 3 levels. These are normally handled in (CONTROL) mode, this
button will be lit orange.;

SOUND <B4> - Sounds are either single samples or multiple samples mapped across a PAD.
There are 16 pads in total. A bank of 16 sounds can be held in a group. Samples can be loaded from
the browser or sampled directly to a PAD from an internal or external source.

~ 5 of 23 ~
An example is that a drum kit will be distributed across the 16 pads with some being Kick, Bass,
Snares, Cymbals, High Hats, Effects etc. on individual pads.

A Pad are selected by tapping it. The selected PAD will light bright orange.
Pads that are empty will not glow
Pads that are loaded with a sound but not selected will glow dull.
A Pad will flash when triggered during playback
2 Effects (FX) can be chained into each of the 16 Pads

GROUP <B3> - Maschine contains 8 Groups labelled A,B,C,D,E,F,G,H. These are accessed via the
Group buttons.

An example of a group is a series of 16 Pads created with a range of individual sounds on each of
the 16 pads

Groups are selected by pressing Group button A-H

Each group can hold 16 sound slots i.e. a full bank of pads
Group buttons glow bright blue when selected
Group buttons glow dim blue when containing data but not selected
Group buttons will flash when triggered during playback
Each Group can hold 2 chained effects (fx)
Each group can hold 64 Patterns shown in 4 banks on the right display

SCENES (SCENE) The arrangement of a song is made up using a combination of a maximum of

64 scenes. A scene contains a combination of groups and patterns to create a composition stacked in
a column. Scenes are then triggered as the arrangement progresses to create the main song.

Scenes are not selected by buttons but accessed by using the (SCENE) button and the Right
Display.
A scene itself contains patterns and groups to build a tune. Scenes are therefore the building
blocks.
Effects cannot be applied directly to a scene

A MASTER <B2> section enables holistic elements such as Volume, Tempo etc. to be managed.
The Master element can host 2 effects.

3. Making a Song

This Section provides quick references to functions used with constructing a basic song using
sounds, groups and scenes.

Although the levels of complexity and involvement change on a project by project basis the steps
for a typical, basic project construction are shown in the following walkthrough. Steps in bold text
are detailed in the subsequent quick reference sections while the other elements in normal text are
covered elsewhere in this document.

WORKING WITH SCENES

So now we have some sounds playing a tune. But to configure these patterns into an arrangement to
make a song, we use SCENES. A project can have up to 64 scenes. A scene is composed of a series

FX & Typical Applications

FX Type Application / Use

Compressor Dynamics Creates a dense sound and fattens drums, used to control dynamics allowing higher perceived loudness

Gate Dynamics Cuts signals below threshold. Makes rhythmic chops, stutter effects and slices

Limiter Dynamics Used to control dynamics allowing higher perceived loudness and preventing clipping above 0db. Typically use on
the master bus to control dynamics rather than add musical effects.
Maximizer Dynamics Similar to a limiter with the specialist edge of improving perceived loudness

Create filter sweeps, create synthesizer sounds. Musical effects on pads and sounds typically with filter cut changes
Filter Filtering of LFO adjustments adds musical content. Used more as an effect than say an EQ.

Boost or cut frequency bands. Normally used more to shape the sound than a musical effect.
EQ Filtering

Chorus Modulation Thicken signals, enhance stereo content. Gives a doubling effect to melodic sounds

Flanger Modulation Similar to Chorus but with faster modulation and feedback synced to tempo

FM Modulation Adds a gritty texture to the sound by modulating the frequency of the signal

Freq Shift Modulation Adds crazy effects by shifting defined frequencies a specified amount

Phaser Modulation Modulates the frequency of 2 parts of the signal

Ice Spatial A type of reverb that is used for adding more effects including metalic sounds to the signal rather than just 'space'.
Ideal on soundscapes.
Metaverb Spatial A more synthetic sounding reverb that adds more interest than just space.

Reflex Spatial A more compact room reverb with artificial and metalic tones.

Reverb Spatial A more traditional reverb effect adding space and distance ideally for drums and percussion.

Beat Delay Delay Designed specifically to delay synced to the song tempo to create rhythmic effects.

Grain Delay Delay Used to create evolving ambient textures. This chops grains of the signal and delays them.

Grain Delay Manipulates the speed and pitch of the signal. Adds interesting crazy effects
Stretch
Resochord Delay Comb filter, good on drums and spoken non melodic vocals.

Distortion Distortion Heavy stompbox distortion, with a fuzz type effect

Lofi Distortion Vintage style bit reduction.

Saturator Distortion A combination of compression and saturation to increase loudness and add harmonics

8. Hints, Tips & Advanced Solutions

8.1 Playing a sound pad only while Sometimes when long samples are hosted in a pad there is a long wait for the
held sound to complete before another pad can be triggered on its own. As a work
around:-
1. Select <B4>, 'SOUND'
2. Select Page 2 of 6
3. Adjust Type <K4>, to be set to 'ADSR' or 'AHD' from the default 'ONE
SHOT'
8.2 Setting a choke to cut off pads One technique is to set up monophonic mode rather than polyphonic.
when playing another 1. Ensure in (CONTROL) Mode
2. Press 'GROUP', <B3>
3. Press 'SRC', <B5>
4. Select Page 1 of 3
4. Adjust 'POLYPHONY', <K1>, to equal 1

note polyphony can be set for pads but when, choking sounds group
polyphony is adjusted.

another technique is to set up choke groups, where all sounds assigned to the
same group will cut each other off:-

1. Ensure in (CONTROL) Mode

2. Press 'SOUND', <B4>
3. Select PAD Sound [P1]-[P16]
4. Press 'SRC', <B5>
5. Adjust 'CHOKE GRP', <K2>, to equal 1 (or 1 of 8 groups).
6. Set all sounds to choke in the same group repeating steps 2-5

Repeat triggering the same pad wont choke unless polyphony is set to 1 for
the group.

8.3 Sampling from within your Soundflower is a third party free software utility that links to the sound
MAC using Soundflower interface and enables internal sound i.e. web, or audio player sounds to be
routed elsewhere i.e. Into maschine)

The software is Mac only and is obtained from;

http://cycling74.com/products/soundflower/

Note there may be variations in this walkthrough depending upon the model
of the mac etc.

1. Run the Soundflowerbed application.

2. Set up Maschine for an open pad to sample to
3. In the Mac Audio settings set the Audio device to the 16ch Soundflower
device for the output. Audio interface can remain as is for output.
4. In the Maschine settings set the 'Audio Device' to be Soundflower 16ch and
routing to channels 0-1
5. Set up sampling on Maschine using the 1 & 2 stereo inputs, External
i.e. IN 1 L+R
6. Set Soundflower 16ch application to equal your sound card to monitor
sampled signal.
