"The Counting by Tens Song Scratch Garden."

Objective: Student Friendly:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ftati8iGQcs Students will learn to skip count by tens with a
hands-on approach.

Big Understanding:
Skip counting makes counting more efficient when counting money and building mathematical skills.

Formative/Summative Assessment Evidence:

-Walking around while students are working to see if they understand or need help. (F)
-Check the papers to see if they understood the concept. (F)
-Discuss as a class after they papers are completed. (F)
-Have students do a test at the end of the concept to determine who understands the concept and who
needs more help. (S)

Higher Level Questions to Incorporate: Higher Level Questions to Incorporate:

-If each students represents the number ten how many students would our class have?
-How many tens does it take to make a 100?

Instructional Strategies / Student Activities/ Grouping Patterns:

-Watch the youtube video at the carpet.
-Discuss the youtube video and ask the students for examples of counting by tens.

Teacher Input/Modeling: IDO:

-Discuss the youtube video and after give them examples of skip counting by tens.
-Explain the activity.

Guided Practice: WE DO:

Students will give examples of skip counting by tens.
Break up in groups of two and each person in the group has a paper with the words: "chairs, desk,
students, cubbies, flags, ect." Each items will represent the number 10. They have to skip count by 10s to
find out how many items there are of each.

CFU (Checking for understanding):

Walk around and see if anyone needs assistance or looks like they are struggling. Check the papers at
the end to see if a student did not understand. Bring the groups back to the carpet after the activity and
let the students tell me what numbers they came up with.

Independent Practice: YOU DO (Individual students):

Students will have their own paper to write on so if they disagree with their partner they can put a
different answer and explain why after the activity.

Ending, Summary / Reflection:

Bring students back to the carpet and let them tell me the numbers they came up with. Ask them:

"why counting some items may have been easier than others?"

Materials / Resources:
-Paper with items in the classroom
-Pencils
-Youtube video
-Items in the classroom

Grouping Patterns:
