EFFECTIVENESS OF

TREATMENT OPTIONS FOR

Open-Angle
GLAUCOMA
Despite several clinical trials on the
effectiveness of medical treatment on the
management of glaucoma, additional
research is needed to determine the
effectiveness of each treatment.

The RiGOR study compared the effectiveness of medications,

laser surgery, and incisional and/or other surgery in patients
with open-angle glaucoma who were seen at follow-up periods
of 3, 6 and 12 months after treatment.

To assess the effectiveness, the primary study end-point was

the reduction in IOP of 15% or more at the 12-month mark,
which is considered an indicator of success...

A TOTAL OF 2597 ELIGIBLE PATIENTS WERE ENROLLED:

1377 436
(53%) (17%)
With With incisional or
medication other surgical
therapy procedures

784
(30%)
Of whom were
planned to be treated
with laser surgery

Based on the study, a higher proportion of patients receiving

incisional or other surgical procedures achieved the target of
15% 15% reduction in IOP at the 12 month follow-up, compared with
patients in the medication group. Small or no differences were
seen between the laser surgery and medication groups.
