The Fundamental Way Out for Foreign

Language Teaching in China

Abstract: The main reason for the false beliefs in

Chinas foreign language teaching is that decision-
making relies on common sense rather than treating
it as a scientific discipline. Start early in foreign
language learningis given as an example to illustrate
the importance of applying the science of applied
linguistics to the study of foreign language teaching
in China. This implies the necessity to arm foreign

language teachers in China with the theory and

practice of applied linguistics, to respect the objective

law in the making of scientific and democratic
decisions, to have a long-term view in the reform of
foreign language teaching, and to give publicity to
the public scienceof applied linguistics. The
scientific spirit of applied linguistics is that decision-
making should be based on scientific experiments
and its conclusion should be made explicitto the

public.
