Stud ies hosted by the C ity U n iversity o fH ong K ong. Th is paper starts from m ak ing a distinc tion between appliable lingu is-
tics and applied lingu istics or applicable lingu istics, and attem pts to argue fo r the follow ing po ints: the long - term goa l of
app liab le lingu istics is to construct a sem ogenetic system of language, its gu id ing pr inciple is dependent on soc ia l accounta-
b ility to explain and describe sem ogenesis, and its current research focus is inte lligen t application. T he pape r a lso touches
upon the re lation be tw een app liab le lingu istics and M arx ist linguistics.
