On the Basic Un it in G ramm atica l Stud ies

Abstrac tB In recent years, the notion of -basic un it. in the study o f Ch inese g ramm ar has been much studied and
rev iew ed am ong Ch inese linguists. F ollow ing a brief rev iew o f the h istory and defin ition o f the -bas ic un it., this paper
expresses the fo llow ing po ints concern ing the understanding and comm ents of re levant theoretical mode ls: one has to
be aware of the d ifference am ong syn tactics, g ramm atics, lingu istics, or linguistics in its broader sense; various
interpretations and cho ices of -basic un it. a lso lay the founda tion o f contemporary lingu istic theo ries in the west;
through a discussion about the -basic unit. in bo th Ch inese and western gramm atica l research, one w ill find that the
cho ice o f-bas ic un it. is a ma tter of se lecting the -cut- in. po int in g ramm atical research; the study o f-bas ic un it. has
m oved from syntactic catego ries to ex tensive g ramm atics; the study o f -bas ic unit. is no t m erely a top ic of Chinese
lingu istics, but one o f genera l lingu istics; the positive m eaning of such an argum ent can be seen from the re lation
betw een h iera rchical know ledge structure and hor izonta l know ledge struc ture.
