Problem Set Chem 17 Coordination Complexes and Complexation Equilibria

Deadline of submission: November 4, 2015, Wednesday, 2:30 PM (start of lecture class)

1.) Provide the name of the following (2 points each):

a.) Ag2[HgI4]

b.) K3[AgF4]

c.) Na[SbCl2Br2(OH)2]

d.) [Al(OH)(H2O)5]C2O4

e.) [Pt(H2O)4][PtCl6] (platinum can be 4+ or 2+)

2.) Provide the formula for the following (3 points each):

a.) tris(ethylenediamine)iron(III) hexacyanoferrate(II)

b.) triamminedichloronitrito-N-cobalt(III)

3.) 25.0 mL of 0.1 M Iodide anion (I-) is added to 50.0 mL of 0.001 M Pb2+ solution. The Ksp of PbI2 is
9.8 10-9.

(a) What is the final equilibrium Pb2+ concentration after mixing the two solutions? (4 points)

(b) What minimum amount of EDTA (in M) is needed to be present in the solution to just start the
dissolution of PbI2(s) formed? The Kf of [PbEDTA] complex is 2.00 1018 (4 points)

4.) (12 points) A coordination compound was determined to be composed of the following metal
center and ligands:
Metal center: Co3+,
# of ligand and type: 2 en, 2 NO2-, and Cl-

However, two different forms of the complex come from the same set of substances. Determine the
formula and structure of each complex based on the following properties:

a) A 0.1 molal solution of this complex causes water to freeze at -0.372 oC (Kf of water 1.86 oC/molal).
The compound does not react with AgNO3(aq), and the solution of this complex does not show optical
activity. (6 points)

b) A 0.1 molal solution of this complex causes water to freeze at -0.372 oC (Kf of water 1.86 oC/molal).
The compound reacts with AgNO3(aq) to form a precipitate, and a solution of this complex shows
optical activity. (6 points)
