As the use of alternative refrigerants increases, so does the need for in-house laboratories and programs
that can reliably test such products. This presentation will provide an overview of the requirements in
preparing your lab for testing products with flammable refrigerants. Attendees will walk away with an
understanding of general processes and best practices, including protocols on required procedures,
safety needs and training.

Byron Horak is Director of Engineering, HVACR Performance at Intertek. With over 36 years of experience,
Byrons responsibilities include developing and maintaining facilities and staff to stay on the cutting edge of the
HVACR testing industry. Current activities include participation in four ASHRAE SPCs, three ASHRAE TCs, 5
ISO WGs, and Secretariat of IEC SC61D Subcommittee for Appliances for Air Conditioning for Household and
Similar Purposes IEC Standard 60335-2-40. Additionally, Byron is Secretary of ASHRAE Standard 37, MOT
for Rating Electrically Driving Unitary Air-Conditioners and Heat Pump Equipment, and participates on the AHRI
Small Unitary Engineering Subcommittee to rewrite AHRI Standard 210/240, Performance Rating of Unitary Air-Conditioning &
Air-Source Heat Pump Equipment.
