TextDiscourse and Information A Systemic functional Overview

Abstract This paper discusses some important notions in discourse analysis from the systemic functional
perspective. The author begins with the two terms oftextanddiscoursereviewing briefly the history of
discourse analysis. Then he comes to the question of discourse as variationarguing that we need to distinguish
the type of discourse variation associated not with register and genre but with what Bernstein calledcodeand
that we need the concept not just ofmultimodaldiscourse but of discourse that is multisemiotic this is
followed by a discussion of whether there arespecialtypes of text for exampleworks of literature and if
soin what sense they are specialand whether the critical feature might be the role of metaphorlexical or
grammatical. The author notices that many scholars who undertake discourse analysis approach the task from a
particular angle. A case in point is the approach known as critical discourse analysis provoking Jim
Martins counterproposal for positive discourse analysis. Unlike matterwhich has expansion in space
much of meaning cannot be measured but people seem to hanker for a balance between ideational and
interpersonal meaningwhich may account for the popularity of interpersonal topics among todays researchers
into discourse. In the last sectionthe author turns to the relation between discourse and technologybringing
out the many-sided role of the computer in discourse analysisincluding machine translation.
