Introduction

Algonquin College recognizes that mentoring relationships can be especially meaningful to new
students. An experienced senior level student can give personal support to a new student who is
adjusting to the workload and pace of the dental assisting program.

Benefits of the Program


Mentee (new student):

Support and guidance during their integration into the dental assisting program
Exposure to additional resources and support networks

Mentor (experienced student):

Recognition for influencing the growth and success of another dental assisting student
Exposure to new ideas, other perspectives, and intellectual stimulation.

Responsibilities of the Mentor:


Advise the mentee of appropriate resources (Academic Advisor, Academic Coordinator, Student
Support Specialists)
Give insight, advice, encouragement and support as needed
Promote and facilitate professional relationships
Not expected to provide peer tutoring, AC services are in place for this
Refer any difficult questions or situations to the curriculum coordinator, or course instructor
ASAP

Responsibilities of the Mentee:


Be open and receptive to the advice and suggestions offered by the mentor
Respect the time and opportunities provided by your mentor
Acknowledge the contributions your mentor makes to your success in the dental assisting
program

Qualities of a good Mentor


Volunteers to be a mentor and is enthusiastic about mentoring
Is respectful, empathetic and non-judgmental.
Is a positive role model and knowledgeable about the dental assisting program
Is transparent about his/her own experiences in the program
Listens to the whole story before commenting

Terms of Program
Communication can happen in person, via email, phone or privately thru social media
Only AC emails will be used for communication purposes
If the agreement is terminated by either party, the academic coordinator shall be notified
