Nowdays the main religions of Japan are shintoism and buddism.

shintosim is indigenous to Japan and

related to Izanami and Izanagi , who are considered the creators of japanese islands. Buddism comes to
Japan from India trough China and Corea in 6th century. Christianity in Japan is among the nation's minority
religions. the first known appearance of organized Christianity in Japan was the arrival of the Portuguese
Catholics in 1549. Francisco Xavier (a Catholic Saint),[30] Cosme de Torres (a Jesuit priest), and John
Fernandez were the first who arrived in Kagoshima with hopes to bring Christianity to Japan. Xavier and the
Jesuit order was held in good esteem and his efforts seemed to have been rewarded with a thriving
community of converts.[31] At baptism, these converts were given Portuguese "Christian names" and
encouraged to adopt Western culture. This practice contributed to suspicions that the converts were in
reality foreign agents working to subvert social order.[note 1][31] Under Oda Nobunaga, the Jesuits
enjoyed the favor of the shogunate, but the situation began to change once Toyotomi Hideyoshi's
suspicions were aroused against Christianity. Under Hideyoshi and the succeeding Tokugawa shogunate,
Catholic Christianity was repressed and adherents were persecuted

After decades of wars , The japanese governement was worried about any potential threat for the nation.
So the Japanese Tokugawa shogunate started a isolationist foreign policy , called Sakoku (?), under
which relations and trade between Japan and other countries were severely limited, nearly all foreigners
were barred from entering Japan and the common Japanese people were kept from leaving the country.
Japan was not completely isolated under the sakoku policy The policy stated that the only European
influence permitted was the Dutch factory and this explains why the only falg we see in the last blade is the
ducth flag (in Lee stage and in Juzoh stage).

In 1853 four-ship squadron appeared in Edo Bay (Tokyo Bay)lead Commodore Matthew C. Perry, sent on
mission specifically to open trade routes. Commodore Perry's superior military force was the principal
factor in negotiating a treaty allowing American trade with Japan, thus effectively ending the Sakoku (
?) period of more than 200 years in which trading with Japan had been permitted to the Dutch and Chinese
exclusively. The sight of the four ships entering Edo Bay, roaring black smoke into the air and capable of
moving under their own power, deeply frightened the Japanese. Perry ignored the requests arriving from
the shore that he should move to Nagasakithe official port for trade with the outsideand threatened in
turn to take his ships directly to Edo, and burn the city to the ground if he was not allowed to land. These
ships have gone down in history as Black ships where Black refers to the black color of the older sailing
vessels, and the black smoke from the coal-fired steam engines of the American ships
