Those who went to the
barangays near Marawi to
provide the immediate needs
of the people, especially food,
shared their testimonies. The
items brought were not really
sufficient for the number
of families or evacuees
affected. That is why there
are still requests for more
generous hearts to share the
needed goods through the
Social Action Center of the
Archdiocese of Cagayan de
Oro.

said that there are 550 families
who came to Barra, Opol from
Marawi. With this situation, he
is requesting some assistance
from the local barangay and
generous people to help the
evacuees in their needs.

conference, we hope that
the message of peace, unity
and harmony may be heard
and lived by our people. The
Oratio Imperata read by
Msgr. Florencio Salvador is a
prayer to be said in Catholic
churches when people come
together or at the celebration
of the Eucharist. The prayer
for peace, composed by the
coalition for peace, unity and
harmony, was led by Msgr. Rey
Monsanto, SSJV, Rev. Pastor
Goel Bagundol of ECCP, and
the Muslim representatives.
The people are encouraged
to memorize it and pray for
peace anytime they can, not
only for Marawi but also for
Mindanao, for the country, and
for the whole world.

INTERFAITH PRAYER FOR PEACE By Msgr. Rey S. Manuel Monsanto, JCD, HP, SSJV
A month and some days ago when the so-called siege of
Marawi began and Martial Law for Mindanao was declared
by the President of the Philippines, Rodrigo Roa Duterte,
the members of Tulay Kalinaw, Balay Mindanao and other
groups working for peace among the peoples of Mindanao
belonging to different cultures and religious beliefs, the
ACCESS and Social Action Ministry of the Archdiocese of
Cagayan de Oro, the CSWD representing the government of
the City of Cagayan de Oro and the members of Interfaith
Forum for Peace and Harmony in the Philippines (IFPHS)
some of whom belong also to the Interreligious Dialogue
(IRD) Ministry of the Archdiocese came together to discuss
the situation and share their thoughts on what to do or how
to react to the situation and especially towards the affected
people of Marawi who by then already began fleeing from the city.
Air strikes already started then. And hostages had already been taken.
The Archbishop, Most Rev. Antonio J. LEDESMA, SJ presided over the
meeting.
Many thoughts and opinions and apprehensions came out, many
ideas were shared and many solutions and ways of intervening were
proposed. One big concern then was also the safety of Fr. Teresito
Chito Suganob, the Vicar General of the Prelature of Marawi, and
of the others who have been made hostages by the rebels. One idea
was even floated if it was possible to have some people approach the
leaders of the ISIS-inspired MAUTE group to sit down for a dialogue
and end the war that was taking its toll on the people and the land
and properties within the besieged city. The problem of how to
extend help to IDPs (Internally Displaced Persons) from Marawi was
also discussed because it made clear especially by the Muslims who
attended the meeting and by DSWD representatives who had just
been to evacuation centers in Iligan City that the Maranaos as much as
possible would not stay in evacuation centers. They would rather stay
in the homes of their relatives.
Finally it was decided that there should be a big Prayer for Peace
Rally to be made in the City of Cagayan de Oro that would start with
a march and participants carrying placards calling for prayer for
peace and asking for stoppage of the air strikes in Marawi. But after
discussing the proposal, it was finally seen that the plan would not
be possible because there may not be a permit for that because of
Martial Law that was prevailing. It may also invite trouble if the crowd
will be infiltrated with people who would like to incite trouble and
we could cause more trouble. So it was decided to just invite instead
for a smaller gathering for prayer for peace some representatives
especially from the different peace groups and religious groupings.
This was finally done in one of the halls of the main campus of Lourdes
College.
The members of the IFPHS was tasked to compose a prayer that
can be prayed by all faith groups, and as much as possible easily
memorized. The small group did immediately its task and came out
with this short interfaith prayer for peace in Mindanao. It is a prayer
mainly to remind all of us that peace cannot be achieved and much
less sustained by warfare and bullets alone. Each person must be a
person of peace himself or herself not only now but every day of his or
her life wherever and in whatever circumstance he/she may be. Here
is the very short prayer in English:
GIVE US, O LORD, THE BOLDNESS TO LIVE IN DIALOGUE
IN THE MIDST OF DIVISIONS AND CONFLICTS,
AND TO BE PEACE TO ALL YOUR CREATION.
AMEN.
We are requested to memorize and pray this short prayer
anywhere and anytime. For Catholics we are asked to include this
especially during our evening Angelus.
We were thinking and hoping then that the war was going to be a
simple one and could end in at most two weeks. But it has now shown
to be a difficult urban warfare and the ISIS-MAUTE well entrenched
and meticulously prepared in logistics and provisions for a protracted
war. Thus, the more we are asked to intensify our prayer for the end
of the war. We are also asked not to be tired in trying to extend help
to the thousands of Maranaos who have become IDPs in our city. We
are also asked not to turn them away or drive them away from our
subdivisions and barangays and sitios. They are not the enemy; they
are against their will and dreams victims of the war as we too are
victims of the fear generated by the ISIS-MAUTE. They are not here to
create trouble but to seek for refuge.
We are thankful that the DepEd has ordered schools to accept
even without papers now the school children into their schools we
hope this can be complied with in spite of possible difficulties. We
thank also all the city barangays and all those who have reached out
in help to the IDPs within their areas. We thank all the groups that
have organized ways of helping the IDPs. We also would like to thank
our soldiers and policemen for behaving well and dutifully doing their
duties under Martial Law and thus making this martial law experience
very different from the Marcos type we pray and hope they persevere
in that stance.
We continue to ask each and every one to continue to cooperate
well for the peace in Mindanao and especially for the rise of new
Marawi. We earnestly hope the government will make true its promise
to rehabilitate and rebuild the beautiful Islamic City of Marawi as soon
as the war is over. And let us continue our prayer TO BE PEACE so that
real peace can be achieved over the ashes and decay of Marawi.

2017 Summer class at Pope John Paul II, National Institute

for Studies on Marriage & Family

The 2017 Summer Study on

Marriage and Family was conducted from
May 3-27, 2017. There were 35 delegates
coming from the different archdioceses
and dioceses of the country. Enrolled this
year were ten priests, seven religious,
and 18 laypersons. Three subjects were
offered this summer namely Foundation
of Education with Seminar in Teaching by
Professor Maria Teresa Causing, Doctor
in Education; Ethics & Foundation of
Moral Christian Life by Reverend Father
Ruel Jundos, SThD, Licentiate in Sacred
Theology; and Statistical Methods
by Professor Lovella S. Divinagracia,
Masters in Education.
Upon recommendation of the CFLA
Director Rev. Fr. Garry Igot,SSJV, this is
the third year that Archbishop Antonio J.
Ledesma had sent five representatives to
avail of this particular summer study at
Pope John Paul II, National Institute for
Studies on Marriage & Family in Bacolod
City. The five delegates are Sr. Melodia
A. Tamparong, MSHF, Archdiocesan
CFLA Coordinator; Susan Pajente,
Archdiocesan RP-NFP Coordinator;
Lolita T. Bacarrisas, Archdiocesan CFLA
Staff; Elizabeth Lozada, Archdiocesan
CFLA Worker; and Nilda Villegas, a CFLA
Worker of Gingoog City.
This Summer Study which will lead
to a Masters of Education in Marriage
& Family is offered every summer for
four consecutive years. There will be
a total of 15 subjects equivalent to 56
units, including Supplemental Education
Subjects, Comprehensive Examination
(Written and Oral) and Thesis Writing.
Realizing the need for more
qualified training for Family Life
Workers, Msgr. Victorino A. Rivas, JCD, a
Doctor of Canon Law and the incumbent
Director of JPII Institute on Marriage
and Family, set up the institute. It offers
classes that will equip students with
a working knowledge of marriage and
family to be of help to the couples and
families in their community. The institute
is now known as the Diocesan Institute
on Marriage and Family.
The JP II Institute envisions the
development of educational effort and the
aggressive implementation of pastoral
programs to promote the dignity of the
human person, the sacramentality of
marriage and the sanctity of the family
according to Gods plan and by the
promptings of the new evangelization
of St. John Paul II which transforms
society. The institute is committed
to serve as a learning and formation
center which will afford students with
the working knowledge of the new
evangelization especially based on the
Nuptial Theology of the Body of St. John
Paul II, faithful to the global directions
of the Pontifical Institute in Rome.
Established in 1994, the institute
also offers a six-month Program on
Theology of Marriage, the Canons
on Marriage, the Family Code of the
Philippines, Natural Family Planning,
Counseling and Psychology. It offers
training for Family Life Workers in the
parish/chaplaincy, formation of Family
Life Ministers and Family Animators/
Teachers Training. Any individual
therefore with at least one year of college
education, willing to undergo the six-
month training and committed to work
in the Family Life Ministry of the diocese,
parish or chaplaincy may enroll in the
Diocesan Institute.
Graduates of the Summer Courses
on this program will be given a degree
by the University of La Salle Bacolod that
will qualify them to teach or be employed
in all types of institutions either civil or
ecclesiastical.
At the orientation, Msgr. Vic Rivas
told the class that the family nowadays
needs redemption. He reiterated the
words of Pope Benedict that the world
today is not loving enough, we have not
love enough because we dont have enough
faith. If you dont love Jesus you cant love
your spouse. Therefore, faith must be the
underlying principle in marriage.

Holy Rosary Parish, headed by Rev. Fr.

Santuario Eucaristico hosts 7th Archdiocesan

Eucharistic Congress
In everything, love and serve
the Lord. Faithful to the commitment
to serve the people of God in their
prophetic mission, the Archdiocese of
Cagayan de Oro gathered to celebrate
the Solemnity of the Body and Blood
of Christ, also known as Corpus
Christi through the 7th Archdiocesan
Eucharistic Congress with the theme:
Eucharist: Sacrament of Communion
in Santuario Eucaristico, Sacred Heart
Parish on June 17, 2017. This is the
fourth time since 2014 that the parish
has done this.
The resource speaker was Fr.
Manoling Francisco, SJ, who is known
to be one of the most gifted liturgical
musicians in the country and composer
of the famous songs like Tanging Yaman,
In Him Alone, and Tinapay ng Buhay.
He emphasized Communion in three
(3) parts: Rooted in Jesus Christ,
Overcomes Divisions, and For Mission.
Eucharist as Sacrament of
Communion must be rooted in Jesus

Santuario Eucaristico celebrates Feast

Heart of Jesus: Source of of Our Lady of the Blessed Sacrament
Communion of Communities Ninety-five years ago, the Sacred
Congregation of Rites authorized the
Blessed Sacrament Congregations to
celebrate the Feast of Our Lady of the
Most Blessed Sacrament on the 13th
of May each year. The Agoho Drive
community of Santuario Eucaristico
celebrated this feast during the
Eucharistic celebration presided by
Fr. Froilan Briones, SSS, at the Our
Lady of Blessed Sacrament Chapel on
May 13, 2017.
After the mass, the people gathered
in the chapel for a fiesta celebration.
Baptism of eight children from the
community highlighted the event. On
the same day, the entire world also
commemorated the 100th anniversary
of the apparition of Our Lady of Fatima.
It was indeed a festive and meaningful
celebration honoring Mother Mary
under the title of Our Lady of the

June 23, 2017. It was presided by Fr.

parish priest, and concelebrated by
Fr. Muriel A. Uy, SSS and Fr. Clifford
B. Barrios, SSS. Other guest priests
were Fr. Valerian Pozmok, MIC of the
Congregation of the Marians of the
Immaculate Conception of the Blessed
Virgin Mary, Fr. Ronaldo Eborde of the
Poor Servants of Divine Providence
and Fr. Maximilian Mary Ciar of the
Franciscan Friars of the Immaculate.
Fr. Froilan in his homily said, The
greatest gift of Jesus to us is His love for
us: Love one another as I have loved
you. Jesus showed that He loved us to
the end by laying down his life for us.
Yes, our hearts will not rest until they
are rested in the love of the Sacred
Heart of Jesus.
This year, the parish celebrated a
three-day period of prayer known as
Triduum Masses in preparation for
the Solemnity of the Most Sacred Heart
of Jesus. The parish started its novena
Masses from June 20-22, 2017 with the
sub-themes:

Agents of Communion, June 21
-Heart of Jesus: Forming Agents of
Participation, June 22 -Heart of Jesus:
Forming Agents of Mission
After the Mass followed the
Barrio Fiesta where the parishioners
gathered to eat together and showcase
their talents in a program. This
year, there was a Hataw ng Puso
dance contest featuring folk dances
performed by parishioners. The
winners were the St. Joseph Chapel (1st
Place), Extraordinary Ministers of Holy
Communion (2nd Place), San Roque
Chapel (3rd Place) and Legion of Mary-
Flos Carmeli (4th Place). The rest of the
program included feeding of the less
-fortunate parishioners, a raffle draw,
surprise numbers and messages from
the parish priest and SSS Community

Oro Seminarians hold Sandurot 2017

About fifty seminarians of the
Archdiocese of Cagayan de Oro gathered
at Our Lady of Lourdes Parish, Claveria
from March 31 to April 2 to hold
Sandurot 2017 reflecting on theme:
The Year of the Parish as Communion
of Communities.
Sandurot is the annual gathering
of seminarians from both the college
and theological seminaries. Here,
seminarians have the opportunity to get
to know each other, foster camaraderie
and cooperation, build friendships and
communion.
The seminarians who attended the
event came from different seminaries:
San Jose de Mindanao Seminary for
college seminarians and St. John
Vianney Theological Seminary (SJVTS)
in Cagayan de Oro, St. Francis Xavier
Regional Seminary (REMASE) in Davao
City, St. Marys Theologate in Ozamis
City, San Jose Seminary in Quezon City,
University of Santo Tomas Central
Seminary in Manila, St. Vincent de Paul
Seminary in Manila for theologians.

2017 graduates
Sto. Nio de Oro parish of Cogon,
Limketkai Drive joined the jubilation
of the parishioners who graduated
from different schools, colleges
and universities this year. Twenty
young graduates were honored in a
Eucharistic celebration on April 2, 2017
at Sto. Nio de Oro parish Church. Also
in attendance were their proud parents
and family members.
Fr. Roel Bontol, JCL, SSJV, the
parish priest, presided the mass.
He spearheaded the event and the
beaming graduates marched to the
altar and to their assigned pews as
their names were called. This is your
resurrection day, said Fr. Roel during
the homily. The many challenges,
difficulties and trials did not hinder you
to reach for your dreams. Thus, you are

Youth Coordinating Council delivered
her message for and in behalf of the
graduates. Poverty is not a hindrance
to success, she affirmed. Ang atong
mga ginikanan atong pasalamatan
sa ilang mga paningkamot sa pagpa-
eskwela kanato, labaw sa tanan ang
atong Ginoo, Selina said.
Honoring the graduates from
the parish is the brainchild of Fr.
Roel Bontol. Conceived long before
graduation day, it was his way of
acknowledging the efforts made by
these graduates and of thanking them
for their active involvement in the
parish.

Tabang Marawi Disaster Response

May 23 of this year when the tragic Marawi

domination by the Maute group happened. Both
our Muslim and Christian brothers and sisters
settling, studying, and working in Marawi sought
refuge in the nearby places in order to save
themselves from death and harassments. In their
volition of saving themselves, they fled from the
place bringing only themselves thinking they can
return to their respective places in no time.
Due to the insufficient resources of food,
sleeping materials, and hygiene kits, the Diocese
of Iligan tapped the Archdiocese of Cagayan de
Bp. Edwin de la Pea, DD with SAC-Cagayan de Oro
Oro to conduct relief operations for Baloi and
Saguiaran these are evacuation centers that are
part of Lanao del Norte. Through our supportive
and active partners, we called on for reinforcement
through monetary contributions for the planning,
purchasing, delivery, and distribution of goods
to the assigned areas. Every household received
a pail containing towels, sleeping mat, dipper,
rice, coffee, milo, sugar, oil, dried fish, shampoo,
sanitary napkins, bath soap, razors, nail clippers,
men and women underwear, toothbrush, and
toothpaste, among others.
In Baloi and Saguiaran, we prepared 513
sets of goods for 5 evacuation centers but due to
the time constraint and security, we were only

able to distribute 364 sets of goods. But it did
