Abstrac t: T he F irst SFLEP Cup N ational Co llege Eng lish T eaching Contest has attrac ted g rea t a ttention from both in-
side and outside the co llege Eng lish circ le. P roblem s reflec ted in the contestantsp perfo rmances lead us to rethink
about the nature and functions o f classroom teach ing in fore ign language learning. T he autho r a rgues that c lear ob jec-
tives are c rucial to the success o f classroom teach ing. T he objectives shou ld be set in the light o f tho se in the Colleg e
English Curriculum R equ iremen ts a t the nationa l leve ,l the sy llabus that each indiv idual university has designed for
itsel,f and the practical needs o f students. A ccord ing ly, the evalua tion of c lassroom teaching shou ld adopt the crite ria
tha tm easure the effectiveness of c lassroom activ ities, in add ition to the o rganiza tion and struc ture of c lassroom inter-
ac tions.
