to the cultur al co nnota tio n the y car ry . Based o n the f indings, the paper m akes a com pa ra tiv e
study betw een the chunk kno w ledge o f Chine se EFL lea rner s and tha t o f nat ive spe akers o f Eng-
lish with the chunk ty pe and L 2 pr of iciency a s independent va riables. T he r esults show that the
eff ect o f chunk types is significant, w hile that o f pr o ficiency lev el is less consistent. Chinese
EF L le arner s o f a ll lev els have usually m aster ed much fe wer chunks than native speaker s, espe-
cially heav ily cultur e- loa ded chunks. T his pheno meno n ca n be attr ibuted to the tende ncy of a tta-
ching mo re impo rta nce to lang uag e than cultur e and r eso rt ing m or e to a naly sis than synthesis in
todayps EF L teaching and lea rning in China.
Influence of learnersp thinking style on their L2 skills mediated by their implicit and explicit knowledge

T aking 177 Eng lish m ajor s as its subje cts, this paper st udies the influence o f lear nersp think-
ing sty le o n their L 2 skills m ediate d by the ir implicit and explicit kno w ledge. A n analysis o f the
empir ica l data pr oce ssed by Str uctur e Equation M o de l ( A M O S 7. 0) sho ws th at ( 1) linear think-
ing sty le e xer ts influence o n L 2 skills m ainly be cause o f the mediat ing eff ect of ex plicit know -l
edge ; ( 2) its influence o n re ading is gr eater tha n that on listening and wr it ing and its inf luence
on speaking is insignificant; and ( 3) no nlinear thinking sty le ex erc ises no significant inf lue nce o n
L2 skills in the no n- tar get- lang uag e le arning co ntext beca use no salient r elatio nship e xists be-
tw een no nline ar th inking style and explicit/ implicit kno wledge.
