Abstract This article briefly reports an ELT project being carried

out in a middle school in Jiangsu Province The objectives of the

project are tw o-fold 1 to test the feasibility of implementing

the intensive instruction and autonomous learning model in

middle schools in Chinagiven the existing ELT conditions and

constraints 2 to explore possible w ays to reform the existing

ELT practices and methods In the past tw o yearsthe project

group has carried out extensive experiments and research w ith

needs analysiscurriculum designmaterial developmentclass-

room instruction and program evaluation in the school So far

the project has achieved some very encouraging preliminary re-
