1Abstract2 This paper starts with an introduction of several revolutions or paradigm shifts in the development of lin-
guistics. It then points out that the present interest in cognitive approaches to the study of language signals another possible
paradigm shift in linguistics. The author then briefly discusses the basic tenets and research methodology of cognitive linguis-
tics and reviews some of the important works in the study of cognitive linguistics published in China in the past decade.
