 background
Space observations have become an
essential and integral component of weather
and climate monitoring and prediction.
Satellites have provided observations over
a multitude of domains: inaccessible zones
especially hazardous weather systems like
cyclone, extreme rainfall events, clouds and
precipitation, large scale circulations, atmos-
pheric chemistry, cryospheric studies, glob-
al warming, climate change and land-ocean-
atmosphere interactions. Further, the assimi-
lation of satellite data into numerical weather
prediction models has enhanced the lead
time and accuracy. A global satellite system
for weather and climate studies includes
a constellation of operational geo- stationary
satellites, a constellation of operational low-
Earth orbit sun synchronous satellites and
other advanced and specially designed
sensors like Scatterometers, Radar Altimete-
rs, Radio-occultation sounders, Earth radiat-
ion budget instruments, LiDARs, Hyper-
spectral Imagers and future generation
satellite sensors.
India has been one of the front-runners in
the field of space based earth observation
and weather monitoring. INSAT series of
satellites, with Kalpana-1 being the first dedi-
cated meteorological satellite and INSAT-
3DR the latest one to join the geostation-
ary club, provide 15 minutes temporal cover-
age over India and surrounding regions.
A very high resolution imager and sounder
provide 3dimensional information of the
atmosphere in multiple spectral bands. The
data from this constellation is used operatio-
nally for providing a myriad of geophysical
parameters for various applications includ-
ing weather forecasting through assimilation
in numerical models. The recently launched
Scatsat-1 carrying Ku band scatterometer
provides ocean surface winds. Synthetic
Aperture Radar on-board RISAT-1 is used to
provide crucial climatic information regard-
ing sea-ice displacement as well as other
ocean parameters. Other Indian satellites
like Megha-Tropiques (SAPHIR, ROSA, SCA-
RAB) and SARAL (Ka-band Altimeter) also
provide complementary observations. New
avenues for weather forecasting are also
being explored through Global Navigation
Satellite System (GNSS) based techniques.
With this background, Indian Meteorological
Society, Ahmedabad Chapter (IMSA) with
Space Applications Centre (SAC) has
planned to organize an International Tropical
Meteorology Symposium (INTROMET-2017).
Theme of the symposium is Advancements
in Space-based Earth Observations and
Services for Weather and Climate. The
symposium will provide a forum for
weather and climate scientists to present
their research, exchange ideas, opportunit-
ies for collaboration and discussion on the
current and futuristic aspects of space
based weather and climate studies.

profit, professional scientific society, with its
Headquarter in New Delhi. It has more than 3,000
Life Members drawn from more than 100 research
institutes, universities, user agencies, NGOs, indu-
stry and students. The main objectives of the soci-
ety are
1. Advancement of meteorological and allied
sciences in all their aspects,
2. Dissemination of the knowledge of such
sciences both among the scientific workers
and among the public,
3. Applications of meteorology & allied sciences
to various constructive human activities, such
as, agriculture and land uses, irrigation and
power development, navigation of sea and air,
engineering and technology, medicine and
public health etc.

in various sectors of the society. The society
publishes scientific journal Vayumandal.
The IMS was formed in 1957 and is completing 60
years of its journey and TROPMET also completes
its 25 years - first TROPMET was organised at SAC,
Ahmedabad. Thus, INTROMET-2017 is happy to be
part of the Diamond Jubilee Celebrations for IMS
and Silver Jubilee celebration of TROPMET.

The Symposium will have plenary
sessions and invited talks to be delivered
by international experts on various
themes and contributory papers. Contri-
buting authors are invited to submit their
original contributions in the form of
extended abstracts in English, confor-
ming to any of the above themes with
major focus on the research, technology
and / or field applications.

to 1000 words including references
